Caulker Pond, a deep hole in the Westfield River, on the town line, after the river turns a sharp corner in Swift River and heads toward Chesterfield, was named for "Caulker" Bates who, in the 1820s or 1830s, gave up his work of caulking ships and came to live in the house on the hill beyond Swift River near the old Willcutt place. The Pork Barrel is below this in the river and is a large hole in the rock with water swirling through. Caulker Ledges are near by. "Caulker" Bates has not been identified.

BISBEE FAMILY


1. GIDEON5 BISBEE (John4 3, Elisha2, Thomas1) and Rebecca (Turner) Bisbee had six children born in Pembroke. The his- tories state that he came to Chesterfield in 1755, cleared land near Kidd's Lookout, returned to Pembroke for his family; that he joined in the French and Indian War, where he died of small- pox. His widow and four children came to Chesterfield but ap- parently not to any grant of land on Kidd's Lookout. They settled west of the Westfield River near what is now known as Windy Lane. The widow is supposed to have been buried in the Gate Cemetery. Children:
