Second Article taken up :


To see if the town will authorize the Seleetmen to seleet and lay out as' a schoolhouse lot the lot designated by the School Committee on Francis street, as a suitable place for the erection of a schoolhouse under the provisions of General Statutes, Chapter 38, Section 38.


Voted, That the lot of land on Francis street designated by the School Committee, acting under the authority of the town, as a suitable site for the erection of a schoolhouse, being a part of that belonging to Samuel McLean and John F. McLean, viz., commencing with a line bounded by land now owned by Tompson, and running parallel with Francis street, with a frontage on Francis street of two hundred feet, and having a depth of one hundred feet along the whole dis- tance, not exceeding eighty square rods, be selected and laid out as a schoolhouse lot by the Selectmen, under the pro- visions of Section 38, Chapter 38, of the General Statutes.


Third Article taken up :


To see what action the town will take in relation to alterations and repairs of schoolhouses.

Voted, That when this meeting adjourns, it adjourn to meet on Thursday, the thirty-first instant, at half past seven o'clock in the evening.


Voted, That the sum of one thousand five hundred dollars be raised and appropriated to alter and repair the Heath- street schoolhouse, to be expended under the direction of the Selectmen and School Committee, and that the Treasurer be authorized to borrow said sum in the usual manner.


Voted, That notices of the adjourned meeting be given in the usual manner.

ADJOURNED SPECIAL MEETING, JULY 31, 1873.


Pursuant to adjournment, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met at the Town Hall in said town, on Thursday, the thirty-first day of July, 1873, and were called to order at half-past seven of the clock in the evening by the Moderator, Charles H. Drew.


The motion of Mr. William H. Lincoln to appropriate the sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars for alterations and repairs on Ward schoolhouse, was taken from the table.


After considerable discussion and consideration of the sub- ject, it was -


Voted, That the sum of seven thousand five hundred dol- lars be appropriated for the alterations and repairs of the Ward schoolhouse.


Voted, That the money be expended under the direction of the School Committee.


Fifth Article taken up :


To see if the town will purchase the lot of land on Sewall street ad- joining the lot bought for a town stable.

Sixth Article taken up :


To see if the town will make additional appropriations for sidewalks, sewers, lamp posts, and watering streets.

Voted, To appropriate the sum of two thousand dollars for the construction of a sewer in Irving street.


Moved by Mr. John C. Abbott, that the sum of six thou- sand dollars be appropriated for sidewalks.


This subject was discussed by the meeting for some time, when, on motion of Thomas H. Bacon, it was -


Voted, To refer the matter to the next annual town meeting. Seventh Article taken up :


To hear and act on reports from any committee that may be presented.


The School Committee, by their chairman, reported verb- ally that the committee had considered the subject of build- ing a new schoolhouse on Francis street, and had decided that such a schoolhouse was needed in that locality.


Voted, To appropriate the sum of ten thousand dollars to build a schoolhouse on the Francis-street lot.


Eighth Article taken up :


To raise and appropriate money for any or all of the foregoing articles.


A motion under this article to appropriate six thousand dollars for sidewalks was referred to the next annual town meeting.


Voted, That the Town Treasurer be authorized to borrow the amount appropriated at this meeting, giving the note or notes of the town therefor, in such sums and at such times, not exceeding one year, except that for the construction of St. Paul street, which may be made for a longer time than one year, as may be called for by the Selectmen.

To either of the Constables of the Town of Brookline, GREETING :


In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at the Town Hall in said town, on Tuesday, the seventh day of October next, at nine of the clock in the forenoon, at which time and place the polls will be opened and kept open until six of the clock in the afternoon, during which time they will be required to bring in their votes to the Selectmen on the question of uniting the town of Brookline and the city of Boston as follows ; to wit, -


Said ballots shall be "yes " or "no," in answer to the ques- tion, "Shall an Act passed by the Legislature of this Com- monwealth in the year eighteen hundred and seventy-three, entitled " An Act to unite the city of Boston and the town of Brookline," be accepted ?


Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, to the Selectmen, seven days at least before the day of said meeting.

In pursuance of the within warrant, I have notified and warned the in- habitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at the time and place and for the purposes within named, by leaving an attested copy of the same at their usual place of abode, seven days at least. before said meeting.

In pursuance of the foregoing warrant, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met at the Town Hall in said town, on Tuesday, the seventh day of October in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and seventy- three, and were called to order at nine of the clock in the forenoon by Charles D. Head, Esq., Chairman of the Board of Selectmen. The Town Clerk then read the warrant calling said meeting, and the return thereon of the officer who served the notices.


The polls were then opened for the reception of votes, and were kept open until six of the clock in the afternoon, when, after giving ten minutes' notice that they were about to be closed, so that any legal voter who had not voted might have an opportunity so to do, they were at six o'clock declared closed.


The Selectmen and Town Clerk then proceeded to sort and count the votes given in, and the whole number so given in was one thousand and six, which were sorted, counted, and declaration thereof made in open town meeting, as by law required, and were as follows ; to wit, -


"Yes," two hundred and ninety-nine.


"No," seven hundred and seven.


In voting, the check list was used, and no person was al- lowed to deposit his vote until his name was found on the list and checked.


The business of the meeting being accomplished, a certifi- cate of the foregoing vote was filled out and signed by the Selectmen and countersigned by the Town Clerk, and sealed up in open town meeting and delivered to the Town Clerk to forward to the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at the Town Hall in said town, on Tuesday, the twenty-eighth day of October, at three of the clock in the afternoon, for the following purposes ; to wit, -


First. To choose a Moderator.


Second. To see if the town will make additional appropriations for highways, sidewalks, and street lamps.


.Third. To see if the town will establish a school on Heath street, near Hammond street, and buy a lot and buildings for the same.


Fourth. To hear and act upon the report of the School Committee respecting the proposed new schoolhouse on the lot taken by the town for school purposes on Francis street, and to appropriate such sums of money as may be necessary for the erection of such schoolhouse.


Fifth. To see if the town will purchase additional hose and enlarge the stable for the steam fire-engine.


Sixth. To act upon the claims of parties for labor done and materials furnished on the building of the Town Hall.


Seventh. To see if the town will take any action in relation to pur- chasing land for a cemetery.


Eighth. To act upon the proposition of the city of Boston to annex thereto a part of the town of Brookline.


Ninth. To hear and act upon the reports of the Committee on Water Supply, appointed at a meeting of the town, May 1, 1873, and to take defi- nite action respecting a supply of water for the town, to make all appro-

priations necessary for that purpose, and to adopt such rules, regulations, or ordinances as may be deemed advisable.


Tenth. To hear and act upon the reports of town officers or com- mittees.


Eleventh. To raise and appropriate such sums of money as may be re- quired for any or all of the foregoing articles.


Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, to the Selectmen, four days at least be- fore the day of said meeting.
