ADJOURNED ANNUAL MEETING, APRIL 9, 1879.
Pursuant to adjournment, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met at the Town Hall in said town, on Wednesday, the ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine, and were called to order at seven of the clock in the evening by the Moderator, Charles H. Drew.
Records of last meeting were read and approved.
The meeting then proceeded to fill the vacancies in the list of town officers caused by resignation or otherwise, under the Third Article in the warrant.
The meeting then proceeded to vote for Constable by ballot.
Voted, That the polls be kept open five minutes.
The polls were then declared open to receive the votes of the meeting for one Constable for the ensuing year, and were kept open five minutes, when they were declared closed.
The Moderator and Town Clerk then proceeded to sort and count the votes given in, and the whole number so given in was nine, and were all for Daniel C. Murray, and he was declared elected to the office of Constable for the ensuing year. (Sworn by the Moderator).
The meeting then nominated and chose the following offi- cers for the ensuing year ; viz., -

On motion of Moses Williams, Jr., it was -
Voted, That the sum of one thousand and two hundred ($1200.00) dollars be appropriated to pay the claim of Aaron D. Weld.
Voted, That the vote whereby the sum of five thousand ($5000.00) dollars was appropriated for the abatement of taxes be reconsidered.
Voted, That the sum of one thousand ($1000.00) dollars be appropriated for the abatement of taxes.
Voted, That the vote whereby the sum of sixty-three thou- sand and six hundred ($63,600.00) dollars was appropriated for the sinking fund be reconsidered.

Voted, To take up the reports of the Committees on Sewer Assessments, Diversion of Muddy River, Elevated Railways, and Annexation to Boston.
The reports of the several committees above named, which had been printed and distributed at the previous meeting, were then presented to the meeting as the reports of said committees.
Voted, That the reports of the Committees on Sewer As- sessments, Elevated Railroad, and Annexation to Boston, be accepted.
The Committee on the Diversion of Muddy River reported progress and asked leave to sit again, which was granted, and the committee were continued in office.

Mr. Moses Williams, Jr., presented the report of the Committee on the Revision of the By-Laws, which had been printed and distributed about the town.
On motion of Hon. William Aspinwall, it was -
Voted, That the report be recommitted to the same com- mittee, with full powers, and to report to the adjourned or some. future meeting.
Mr. Henry M. Whitney presented the report of the com- mittee appointed on the tenth day of October last to exam- ine the cause of the alleged impurity of the water supply from Charles river, and to report the extent of the difficulty and the best way to remedy, and the cost of doing it.
After some discussion and examination of the subject, it was-
Voted, That the report be recommitted to the committee, with instructions to report in print to the adjourned meeting more fully in relation to the matter, and also to lay before the town such information relating thereto, which they may

have in their possession or be able to obtain, with their recommendations to the town.
Voted, To take up the report of the Water Board.
On motion of Hon. William Aspinwall, it was -
Voted, That the Treasurer report to the town the cost of the construction, extension, and maintenance of the water works beyond the sale of the bonds.
Voted, That the Water Board be authorized to lay a 12- inch circulating pipe around the inside of the reservoir at an estimated expense of $371, and the same be charged to the extension of water works, the same to be paid from the sum of three thousand and one hundred dollars already voted for the extension of water works.
Voted, That the Water Board have authority to lay a 6- inch main in Brookline avenue, from the point where the main now ends to a point near the Boston line, a distance of 650 feet, at an estimated cost of $588, the same to be charged to the extension of water works, and to be paid from. the sum of three thousand and one hundred dollars already voted for the extension of water works.
Voted, That the Water Board be authorized to lay a 2- inch main in Chestnut place, from the point where the main now terminates to the line of the estate of Ignatius Sargent, a distance of 500 feet, at an estimated expense of $200, and charge the same to the extension of water works, and to be paid from the sum of three thousand and one hundred dol- lars already voted for the extension of water works.
Voted, That the Water Board be authorized to lay mains in the avenue leading southerly from the junction of Boyl- ston and Heath streets, a distance of four hundred feet ; also in Harvard place, a distance of three hundred feet ; also in Aspinwall avenue, from the present termination of the water main opposite Toxteth street, southerly a distance of four hundred and fifty feet, at an estimated cost in the ag- gregate of $890, and the same be charged to the extension of water works, and to be paid from the sum of three thou- sand and one hundred dollars already voted for the extension of water works.
Voted, That the Water Board be authorized to expend the

sum already appropriated for the purchase of a new boiler.

Fourth Article taken from the table.
Mr. Henry M. Whitney presented the amended report of the committee appointed on the tenth day of October last to examine the cause of the alleged impurity of the water sup- ply from Charles river, and to report the extent of the diffi- culty and the best way to remedy it, and the cost of doing it. The said report, which was made to the meeting on the twenty-second instant and had been referred back to be made more in detail, and which had been so made, printed, and distributed among the inhabitants, was brought before the meeting for consideration and action.
After some consideration of the subject, and the matter of securing a foundation for a new pumping station, it was -
Voted, That the report be referred back to the committee, with instructions to secure engineering advice other than that of those whom they have already consulted ; and that the sum of five hundred ($500) dollars be appropriated for that purpose.
Voted, That the sum of one thousand ($1000.00) dollars be appropriated to defray the expenses of the committee.
Voted, That the sum of one thousand and five hundred ($1500.00) dollars be added to the appropriation for the abatement of taxes.
Voted, That the votes whereby the sum of three thousand and one hundred dollars was appropriated for the extension of water works, and the sum of two thousand ($2000.00) dollars was appropriated to purchase a new steam boiler for the water works, be and are reconsidered.
Voted, That the vote whereby the sum of one thousand two hundred ($1200) dollars was appropriated to pay the claim of Aaron D. Weld be reconsidered.
Voted, Unanimously, that the Treasurer be authorized to borrow the sum of seven thousand and eighty-three dollars and eighty cents ($7083.80), giving the bonds of the town

Seventh Article taken up :
To see what action the town will take upon the petition of James Quinn and others that suitable schoolhouse accommodations may be pro- vided in the immediate vicinity of Chestnut and Sewall streets, for the children living in that district.
Voted, That the subject of the Seventh Article be referred to the School Committee, to examine into and report in rela- tion to location, plans, costs, and distances from present school accommodations.
Voted, That the various appropriations made by the town, including those for making and repairing highways and town ways, less the amount in the treasury and the estimated re- ceipts for the current year, amounting to dollars, be assessed upon the polls and estates, real and personal, of the inhabitants, resident and non-resident, of the town, and collected as the town rates are usually charged and collected.

Whitney presented the supplementary re- port of said committee, and spoke at some length of the care and labor of the committee in their investigations into the cause of the impurity of the water, and the construction of the works, and that, in order to remedy the cause of the im- purity, a new conduit must be laid through the meadow near the filtering gallery.
On motion of Mr. Henry M. Whitney, it was -
Voted, That the sum of thirty-five thousand ($35,000) dol- lars be appropriated for moving the pumping station to Cow island, including new house for engineer, new relief engine, and force main to connect with the force main at the present. location of the pumping station, and the other items included in the proposition of Messrs. Shedd & Sawyer, dated April 29, 1879 ; viz., -
