In pursuance of the within warrant, I have notified and warned the. inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at the time and place and for the purposes within named, by caus- ing a printed copy of the same to be left at their last and usual place of abode, also by posting the same in three or more public places, and pub- lished in the " Brookline Chronicle," a newspaper published in said town of Brookline, four (4) days at least before the day of said meeting.

In pursuance of the foregoing warrant, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met at. the Town Hall in said town, on Monday, the fourteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-one, and were called to order at one of the clock in the afternoon by the Town Clerk, who read the warrant calling said meeting, and the return thereon of the officer who served the notice of the same upon the inhabitants.
First Article taken up :
To choose a Moderator.
The polls were then declared open for the reception of votes for Moderator, and were kept open ten minutes, when by a vote of the meeting they were declared closed.
The Town Clerk then proceeded to sort and count the votes given in for Moderator, and the whole number of votes so given in was twenty-one.
For Moderator, George M. Towle had twenty, and was declared elected.
The meeting was then called to order, and prayer was offered by Deacon William H. Cooley.
The Second Article was then taken up :

To choose the usual town officers for the ensuing year.
On motion of Mr. A. E. Kenrick, it was -
Voted, That the meeting now proceed to choose by ballot the following town officers, all to be voted for on one ticket ; viz., -
A Town Clerk, five Selectmen, who shall be Surveyors of Highways and a Board of Health; seven Overseers of the Poor, two of whom shall be women; a Treasurer, who shall also be Collector; three Assessors, three members of the School Committee for three years, four Trustees of the Public Library for three years, two Trustees of Walnut Hills Cemetery for three years, one Commissioner of the Sinking Fund for three years, one member of the Water Board for three years, three Auditors, two Fence Viewers, and nine Constables.
On motion of Mr. Alfred Kenrick, Jr., it was -
Voted, That the polls be kept open until six o'clock in the afternoon.
The Moderator appointed the following gentlemen to assist in sorting and counting the votes ; viz., -
A. E. Kenrick, A. S. Arthur, and H. A. Mayo.
On motion of Mr. Alfred Kenrick, Jr., it was -
Voted, That no business, except that in the Second Article, be transacted to-day.

A communication was received from Mr. George M. Towle, stating that in consequence of a business engagement of seri- ous importance he was obliged to resign the office of Modera- tor of the meeting.
The Town Clerk then called upon the meeting to bring in their votes for a Moderator.
On motion of Mr. Charles H. Drew, it was -
Voted, That the polls be kept open ten minutes for the re- ception of votes.
The polls were then declared open for the reception of votes for Moderator, and were kept open ten minutes, when they were declared closed.

the votes in furtherance of the objects for which the appro- priations were made for the water works.
Mr. Oliver Whyte, for the Water Board, presented several bills of Messrs. Shedd & Sawyer in relation to work of mov- ing the pumping station, amounting to the sum of one thou- sand and one hundred dollars, and explained what the sev- eral charges were for.
Voted, That in the opinion of this meeting the bills are excessive and unjust, and that they be referred to the Select- men for settlement, and that the matter be discretionary with them whether to settle by arbitration or otherwise, as they shall deem best.
On motion of Mr. Charles H. Drew, it was -
Voted, That the Treasurer be authorized to borrow twenty- three thousand five hundred and seventy dollars ($23,570) for the purpose of laying mains for the water works, to con- struct a house for the engineer of the water works, and for other purposes connected with said works, giving the note or notes of the town therefor for a period not exceeding one year and a half, bearing interest at the rate of not more than five per cent. per annum, signed by the Treasurer, and countersigned by a majority of the Selectmen, which in terms shall be made payable and be paid, one half from the taxes of the year 1881, and one half from the taxes of the year 1882.
On motion of Mr. Charles H. Drew, it was -
Voted, That the Treasurer be authorized to borrow a sum not exceeding one hundred thousand dollars in anticipation of taxes, at a rate not exceeding five per cent. per annum, giving the note or notes of the town therefor, signed by the Treasurer and countersigned by the Selectmen, to be paid from the taxes to be raised the present year.
On motion of Mr. A. W. Benton, it was -
Voted, That the sum of sixteen thousand three hundred and forty-seven dollars and thirty-three cents ($16,347.33) be appropriated, and that the Selectmen be authorized and instructed to contract with the Brookline Gas Light Company to light the streets of the town with gas for one year from

May first, 1881, in accordance with the proposal of said com- pany dated March 14, 1881, and that the lighting of the oil lamps be given to Mr. Ritchie.
On motion of Mr. John J. Henry, it was -
Voted, That the sum of two thousand one hundred dollars be appropriated for the lighting of the street lamps that are lighted with oil, and that the contract to light them be given to Mr. E. S. Ritchie by the town.
Dr. Robert Amory moved that the sum of three thousand five hundred dollars be added to the appropriation for the police.
Pending the motion of Dr. Amory, on motion of Mr. A. W. Goddard, it was -

Pursuant to adjournment, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met in the Town Hall in said town, on Friday, the twenty-fifth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-one, and were called to order at half-past seven of the clock in the evening by the Moderator, Rufus G. F. Candage.
Voted, That the reading of the records of the last meeting be dispensed with.
The Moderator then stated that the motion of Dr. Robert Amory, which was pending at the adjournment of the last meeting, was now in order ; to wit, -
That the sum of three thousand five hundred dollars be added to the appropriation for the police.
After some discussion on the matter, the motion being put to the meeting, it was decided in the negative.

Voted, That the vote passed by the town on the twenty- first instant, whereby they voted to borrow the sum of twenty- three thousand five hundred and fifty dollars, be reconsidered.
On motion of Mr. Charles H. Drew, it was -
Voted, That the Treasurer be authorized to borrow the sum of thirteen thousand dollars for the purpose of laying street mains, for the water works, to construct a house for the engi- neer, and for other purposes connected with said works, giv- ing the note or notes of the town therefor for a period not exceeding one year, bearing interest at the rate of not more than five per cent. per annum, signed by the Treasurer and countersigned by a majority of the Selectmen, which in terms shall be made payable and be paid from the taxes of the year 1882, and that the balance, ten thousand five hundred and seventy dollars, be raised by taxes the present year.

Voted, That the votes whereby the town voted on the twenty-first instant to appropriate the sum of eighteen thou- sand four hundred and forty-seven dollars and thirty-three cents for lighting the streets, be reconsidered.
On motion of Mr. L. F. Beecher, it was -
Voted, That the sum of fourteen thousand dollars be appro- priated for lighting the streets, and that the Selectmen be authorized and instructed to contract with the Brookline Gas Light Company to light with gas the streets where the gas lamps are, for one year from the first of May, 1881, in accord- ance with the proposals of said company dated March 14, 1881 ; that the lighting of the oil lamps be given to Mr. E. S. Ritchie, and that the lighting of all the lamps on five moonlight nights in a month be omitted.

To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to purchase from the trustees under the will of Augustus Aspinwall, for a gravel pit, a lot of land formerly owned by James H. Cowan, in the rear of Clyde and War- ren streets, containing about 96,800 square feet, at the price of three thousand dollars.
Voted, That the Fourth Article be referred to a committee of three, to be appointed by the Moderator.
