In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote as the law directs, to meet at the Town Hall in said town, on Tuesday, the seventh day of November next, it being the Tuesday next after the first Monday in said month, at eight and one half of the clock in the forenoon, at which time and place the polls will be opened and kept open until thirty minutes past four of the clock in the afternoon, during which time they will be required to give in their votes for the following State, Na- tional, and County officers ; to wit, -

In pursuance of the within warrant, I have notified and warned the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at the time and place and for the purposes within named, by causing a printed attested copy of the same to be left at their last and usual place of abode; also by posting the same in three or more public places in said Brookline, four days at least before the day of said meeting.

In pursuance of the foregoing warrant, the inhabitants of the town of Brookline, qualified to vote in elections, met at the Town Hall in said town, on Tuesday, the seventh day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty-two, it being the Tuesday next after the first Monday in said month, and were called to order at half- past eight of the clock in the forenoon by Charles H. Drew, Esq., chairman of the Board of Selectmen. The Town Clerk then read the warrant calling said meeting, and the return thereon of the officer who served the notice of the same upon the inhabitants.

votes, and were kept open until thirty minutes past four of the clock in the afternoon, when, after giving due notice that they were about to be closed, and an opportunity to vote to any legal voter present who had not voted, if he desired so to do, they were declared closed.


The Selectmen and Town Clerk then proceeded to sort and count the votes given in, and the whole number of votes so given in 'was one thousand one hundred and thirty-nine, which were sorted, counted, recorded, and declaration there- of made in open town meeting as required by law, and were for the following National, State, and County officers.


For Governor : One thousand one hundred and eleven.


Robert R. Bishop, of Newton, had six hundred and sixty. Benjamin F. Butler, of Lowell, had four hundred and forty-six. Charles R. Almy, of New Bedford, had four. William Gaston, of Boston, had one.


For Lieutenant Governor : One thousand one hundred and twenty-nine. Oliver Ames, of Easton, had seven hundred and six. Samuel W. Bowerman, of Pittsfield, had four hundred and twenty-one. John Blackmer, of Springfield, had one. Byron Weston had one.


For Councillor for the Second Councillor District: One thousand one hun- dred and thirty.


Nathaniel Wales, of Stoughton, had seven hundred and ten. Peter Butler, of Quincy, had four hundred and twenty.

For Representative to the General Court for the Second Norfolk District : One thousand one hundred and twenty-five. D. Blakely Hoar, of Brookline, had four hundred and seventy-three. Rufus G. F. Candage, of Brookline, had six hundred and fifty-two, and was declared elected to the next General Court from the Second Nor- folk District.


In voting, the check list was used, and no person was al- lowed to deposit his vote until his name was found on the list and checked.

The votes cast and the list of voters which had been used at the polls were then sealed up and endorsed by the Select- men, and delivered into the custody of the Town Clerk, in conformity with the laws in such cases made and provided.


The meeting was then declared dissolved by Charles H. Drew, Esq., chairman of the Board of Selectmen.

First. To choose a Moderator.


Second. To choose the usual town officers for the ensuing year ; also to give in their votes, " Yes " or "No," in answer to the question, " Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ?" on a separate ballot.


Third. To see if the the town will accept the list of jurors as revised by the Selectmen and posted according to law.


Fourth. To see if the town will repeal section nine (9), article four (4), of the town by-laws, relating to contracts by town officers, on the petition of Fred. C. Bowditch and others.


Fifth. To see what action the town will take to secure suitable and safe approaches to the Brookline station of the Boston & Albany Rail- road, on the petition of Edward Atkinson.

Annual Meeting, March 5, 1883.


Sixth. To hear and act upon the reports of town officers and commit- tees.


Seventh. To see whether the town will take action relative to the es- tablishment of a higher service in the system of water supply.


Eighth. To see if the town will accept the thirteenth and fourteenth sections of the twenty-seventh chapter of the public Statutes of Massa- chusetts, authorizing public baths and other public works.


Ninth. To see if the town will appoint a committee of three (to serve without pay) to take charge of the trees in the public highways.


Tenth. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to settle any claims or suits against the town.


Eleventh. To see if the town will accept and allow a town way in ex- tension of Toxteth street, as laid out by the Selectmen.


Twelfth. To see whether the town will, by its vote or otherwise, ask the Legislature to extend to women who are citizens the right to hold town offices and to vote in town affairs on the same terms as male citi- zens.


Thirteenth. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to construct the lateral sewers asked for by Charles O. Foster and others in Marion and Harvard streets, and by John J. Henry and others in Kent, Francis, and Toxteth streets, and to make the necessary appropriations therefor.


Fourteenth. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to con- struct any lateral sewers that may be deemed necessary, and to pay for the construction of the same from the receipts for sewer assessments.


Fifteenth. To raise and appropriate such sums of money as may be necessary for all or any of the purposes mentioned in the foregoing arti- cles, or as may be required to defray the expenses of the town for the ensuing year, and especially to act upon all appropriations asked for or proposed by the Selectmen, or by any town officers or committees.


Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant to the Selectmen, with your doings thereon, four days at least before the day of said meeting.

For Moderator, Rufus G. F. Candage had thirty, and was declared elected.


The Moderator then called the meeting to order, and prayer was offered by Rev. Reuen Thomas, Ph.D.


The Second Article in the warrant was then taken up :

Voted, That the votes cast for William Lincoln for Auditor, be counted for William E. Lincoln, there being a mistake in printing the name.


Voted, That a committee of three be appointed by the Moderator to assist the Moderator and Town Clerk in sort- ing and counting the votes.


The Moderator appointed as said Committee, Bradford Kingman, Nathaniel Conant, and Andrew Noland.


Voted, That the polls be closed at half-past five of the clock in the afternoon.


Voted, That no business be done at this meeting except under the Second Article.


Voted, That when this meeting adjourns, it be to meet in this place on Thursday, the fifteenth instant, at half-past seven of the clock in the evening.


The polls were then declared open for the reception of votes for the various town officers, and were kept open until half-past five of the clock in the afternoon, when, after due notice, they were declared closed.


The Moderator and Town Clerk then proceeded to sort and count the votes given in, assisted by the Committee appointed for that purpose, and the whole number so given in was six hundred and twenty-three (seven of which were the votes of women for School Committee), and the following persons, having a plurality, and all a majority, were declared elected : -
