A small place, located in 1865, in Eveline township, Charlevoix county. It is near the head of Pine lake, 12 miles southeast of Charlevoix court house, 11 northwest of Borne Falls station. on the G. R. & I. B. R .. and 344 by rail northwest of Detroit. Mill creek, which here empties into the lake, affords power for grist and saw -mills. Wheat, wood and bark are the principal shipments. Stage to Boyne Falls tri weekly, fare 75 cents, and to South Arm. fare 50 cents. Petoskey, at which the nepreet bank is located, is 26 miles north- east. With an estimated population of 25. is located in Allegan county, about 5 miles north of Allegan court house. No post office.
ETNA.
An incorporated village of 200 inhabi- tants, settled in 1860, and located in Denver township, Newaygo county, 16 miles north of Newaygo court house, and 10 west of White Cloud, on the C. & W. M. R. R., its shipping point, with which stage communication is had daily. White river. upon which the village is located, affords good water power, utilized by a flouring mill and saw-mill. Wheat is the leading agricultural staple of the vicinity, and, with flour, forms the chief exports. Im- proved farms are held at 40 to 50 dollars per acre, unimproved lands at from 5 to 10 dollars per acre. A good opening is presented here for a tannery and a woolen factory. Express, American. Settled in 1854, and located in the town. ship of Akron, Tuscola county, is a post
village of about 50 persons, and the center of a number of small local enterprises, among which are a general store, 2 black- smith shops, 1 wagon shop, 1 cabinet shop, 1 cooper shop, and some others. It is 13 miles northwest of Caro, the county seat. about 100 north of Detroit, and 11 north of Watrousville, a station on the Caro divi- sion M. C. R. R., its point of shipment. ALABASTER.
A village of some 300 inhabitants, set- tled in 1863, and located on the west shore of Saginaw Bay. It is in Iosco county, 5} miles south of Tawas City, 163 north of Detroit and 33 northeast of Standish, its shipping point on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R. Bay City, 65 miles southwest, is the location of the nearest bank. Exten- sive beds of gypsum underlie the town, and the manufacture of plaster is a lead- ing interest. Farming lands in the vicin- ity rate per nere at from $3 to $10. Agri- culture, which does not receive the atten- tion it deserves, would prove remunerative. Exports, plaster and limber. A station on the South Haven Div. M. C. R. R., in Alamo township, northwestern part of Kalamazoo county, 10 miles from Kalamazoo, the county seat, and 153 from Detroit. Principal shipments are wheat, · fruit, etc. Estimated population 40; has a saw mill, 3 churches- Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian -- a Union and a district school. ALBA.
Established as a postoffice during the winter of 1879-8. A flag station on the G. R. & I R. R., 20 miles from Elk Rapids and 280 northwest of Detroit, in the town- ship of Chestonia, Antrim county, 12 miles from Bellaire, the county seat, and near a Water course called the Jordan, a noted natural water power and trout stream. The village, with a present population of about 70, is in the midst of a new but good farm- ing country, and surrounded by an abund- ance of timber. The price of farming land in the neighborhood ranges from 83 to $40 per acre, according to improvements. Principal shipments are wheat and pota- toes. ALBION.
A prominent village of Calhoun county. containing about 4,000 inhabitants, lies on the M. C. R. R. at the crossing of the Lan- sing Div. of the L. S. & M. S. Ry, in the eastern part of the county. It is 20 miles west of Jackson, 12 miles east of Marshall, the county seat, and is pleasantly situated at the confluence of the two branches of the Kalamazoo river, in one of the richest and best-settled farming communities of the State. Unsurpassed water power is afforded by the river, and with excellent railroad facilities for reaching the markets east and west, Albion is destined to a con tinuons and permanent advancement. Al bion college, under control of the Metho dist Episcopal church, occupies a slight elevation in the eastern part of the village in the midst of spacious grounds, and pre. sents an imposing appearance. It now numbers abont So0 students. There are churches of the Baptist, Catholic. Episco pal. Methodist and Presbyterian denomin ations, and graded public schools employ ing 13 teachers. There are 3 hotels. 3 banks (1 national, 3 weekly newspapers.

and a neat opera house, seating 500. The fire department controls 1 steamer and 1 hand engine. The ground where the vil- lage now stands was entered in 1831 and a town site laid out in 1836: in 1838 a post- office was opened here, and in 1855 a vil- lage charter was obtained. The principal ntnufactures are lumber, flour and agri- cultural implements, and these, with grain and general farm products. constitute the chief exports. Farms in the vicinity are valued at $15 to $100 per acre. The United States and American Express and Western Uuion Telegraph Companies have offices here. Mail, daily. Martin Haven, post- master.
