THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
Of Detroit has been fully described in previous editions of this work. We may say that it is one of the best governed cities in the country. The rate of taxation is not high for a growing city, its finances are well managed, and its credit is excep- tionably good, the rate of living is low, and all these, in addition to its noble river, wide avenues and cleanly streets, make it a very desirable place to live and do busi- ness in.

CORPORATE PROPERTY.
The city owns in public buildings, school houses, lands, water works, sewers, etc., $7,838.162.83; and its liabilities are but $2,218,465.44, as shown by the Controller's report, June 30, 1880:
The rate of taxation is much lower than prevails in any city of this class: and the excellent credit of the city is shown by the fact that, in 1880, $200,000 four per cent. bonds were readily sold -- one-quarter at par and three-quarters at one-tenth per cent. premium.
WATER, FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS.
The city is abundantly supplied with excellent water from the river, and the Water Commissioners hold property worth $3,000,000, and handled $445,000 in 1880. The city is well policed at a yearly cost of $135,000.
A very efficient fire department is main- tained at a yearly cost of about $105,500.
THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Are in charge of a Board of Education, and receive all possible support and atten- tion. In this respect Detroit is as well provided for as any city in the country. Besides the public schools, there are many first-class private and denominational schools.
The number of persons of school age in the city is 39,467; whole number enrolled in the public schools, 14,182; average membership, 12,430; average daily attend- ance, 11,735; number of teachers employed, 256; seating capacity of the schools, 13,208.
The schools cost yearly, for superintend- ence and instruction, $148, 777.75; inciden- tal and current expenses, $42,011.89; total cost of education per capita, $16.57.
There are nearly thirty public school buildings, with a valuation of about $750,000.
NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS.
Thirty-six newspapers and periodicals represent the political, religious, commer- cial, scientific, agricultural, temperance, social, and other interests of Detroit. Daily journalism is represented by the Post and Tribune (Republican), the Free Press (Democratic), and the Evening News (Independent), printed in the English lau- guage, and by the VolksWant and Abend Post in German-the former Democratic and the latter independent Republican.
LIBRARIES.
The Public Library (sustained by fines. etc.) is in the charge of a library commis sion. It contains 40,496 volumes, and

THE BRADSTREET COMPANY Improved Mercantile Agency
Executive Offices, 279, 281 and 293 Broadmay, Nem York.

DETROIT OFFICE-No. 9 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. CHARLES F. BECK, SUPT.
ONE ORGANIZATION! ONE MANAGEMENT! ONE INTEREST! VOLUMES ISSUED QUARTERLY.
Sheets of Changes Semi-Weekly. Constant Revisions and Prompt Notification to Subscribers.
We spare no effort to make our work complete, comprehensive, and reliable in all its features, and endeavor to anticipate the wants of our patrons. Owning and directing our whole business. from London to San Francisco, as from Montreal to New Orleans, we are able to control it in all its branches, and thus have unequaled facilities for its positive and prompt transaction, and it is. not possible for the interest of our patrons to suffer from conflict of authority or interest with local managers.
Relying solely on the merits of our work, we respectfully solicit an examination of our system, with the assurance of our ability to substantiate all we claim, and with the knowledge that it is worthy of the earnest consideration of every grantor of credit.
This Agency was established in 1849, by J. M. BRADSTREET, who soon after admitted his son, under the firm style of J. M. BRADSTREET & SON. In 1863 the senior died, but by a Special Act of the Legislature of the State of New York the style remained the same. In April, 1876, the business was incorporated, and in August of the same year it was purchased by its present proprietors, and has since been conducted by them, under the style of THE BRADSTREET COMPANY.
From the commencement of the business down to the present day this Agency has never for an hour failed to fulfill its contracts with subscribers, and its volumes of Reports, as also its sheets of Changes and Corrections, have been issued with a regular. ity and punctuality as positive as the return of the day of the work and the month of the year. Its pronounced success is the best evidence that it has tuttifled the purposes for which it was created.
It has been, from its inception, the progressive Agency of the land, but especially since it came under its present management has it made rapid strides, always onle wor- ing to anticipate the wants of the mercantile community Having no entangling alliance, owningand coffee of referiu all us medications. if is presented

occupies a handsome building, erected specially for that purpose.
The Young Men's Library numbers 15,000 volumes. There is also a respectable library in connection with the Y. M. C. A.
Two very complete law libraries are at the service of attorneys.
CHURCHES, CHARITIES, ETC.
In these respects Detroit is amply sup- plied, and among its church buildings are some of the finest in the Northwest.
The charitable enterprises of the city are under the charge of the " Associated Chari- ties "; and there are also several excellent institutions for the relief of the poor and friendless.
Several well-conducted hospitals are doing a work of mercy.
AMUSEMENTS, SOCIETY MATTERS, ETC.
There are two large Opera Houses and half-a-dozen spacious halls - including Music-Hall, built last year at a cost of $15.000 and seating 3,040 people.
The Masonic and Odd Fellow fraterni- ties are strong here. Both meet in costly Temples. All the other Orders are well represented, especially the beneficiary ones. There are several strong musical societies and orchestras, Detroit being eminently a musical city.
POPULATION AND PROSPECTS. The growth of the city is shown by the following table:
1810. 770
1&10. 9,102
1850. 21,019
1860 40.137
1870. 79,577
1.880. 116.342
This steady increase in population dur- ing the past decade has been matched by progress in other respects. Building has been pushed in all parts of the city. In 1->0. 228 brick and 890 frame buildings were erected, at a cost of $1,641.338. Cap- ital is continually pouring into the city, and there is every reason to think that the place has entered upon a career of greater prosperity than it has ever enjoyed.
