The county seat of Benzie county, is situated in the township of Benzonia, 7} miles due east of Frankfort, and 30 south west of Traverse City, the former being its shipping point by rail, the latter by water. It is in the vicinity of an extensive forest of hardwood timber, the soil being unsur passed for farming purposes. Lumber. fruit and grain form the leading exports Grand Traverse College, a Congregational institution, is located here. BERRIEN SPRINGS.


The county seat.of Berrien county, is on the St. Joseph river, 25 miles from its mouth, in Oronoko township, near the geographical center of the county. Was platted in 1831, incorporated in 1863: re- incorporated in 186; and in 1878. It is 10 miles north of Buchanan, 10 north- west of Niles, and 15 southeast of St. Joseph. Is at present the northern termi- nus of the St. Joseph Valley railroad. Is in the center of a rich and well tilled farming and fruit region. A good Union school and Methodist, Lutheran and United Brethren churches are well supported. Two weekly newspapers, the Berrien Springs E'ra and the Berrien County Jour- nal. Daily stage to Niles, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. Steamboat daily to St. Joseph during the season of navigation. Fruit, lumber, grain and live stock princi- pal shipments. Population, 800. A settlement formed in 1877, is located in Corwith township, in the northwestern part of Otsego county, 238 miles from De- troit, 9 from Elmira, on the G. R. & I. R. R., and same distance from Gaylord, on M. Div. M. C. R. R., to either of which goods may be shipped. Berryville is situ- ated on Lake Gagnier, a beautiful body of water of about 60 acres at the head of Cheboygan river and in the center of one of the finest hardwood timber tracts in Michigan. A flour mill, saw-mill and wood turuing lathes are operated by water power, and lumber is largely shipped. It has Congregational and Methodist organiz- ations and a common school. In the southeast corner of Berrien coun- ty, Niles township; is a postoffice and sta- tion on the South Bend Div. M. C. R. R., 5 miles south of Niles, 6 north of South Bend, Ind., and 15 southeast of Berrien Springs, the county seat. A population of perhaps 200 is accommodated with mail here. BIG RAPIDS.


The capital of Mecosta county, located on the Muskegon river. one of the most important lumbering streams in the State, is 185 miles northwest of Detroit, 56 north of Grand Rapids. and 98 northwest of Lansing. The first settlement here was made about 1855, the village was platted in 1859, and became incorporated as a city in 1869. Its railroads are the Grand Rap- ids & Indiana, the Big Rapids Branch Chi- cago & West Michigan extending from here to Muskegon, where it joins the main line, and the Stanton Branch Detroit, Lan- sing & Northern, completed to this point in 1880. Lumber in its various forms is largely manufactured and exported, there being in operation here 3 saw-mills, 1 shingle mill, 1 clap-board and shingle mill, 1 sash, door and blind factory. 2 planing mills, 1 picture backing manufactory, the largest in the world, and a handle factory. There is also an extensive furniture fac- tory, a flour mill, 2 foundries and machine shops, a boiler shop, a taonery and a brew- ery. The river furnishes a first-class water power here, which is used by about half of the above named establishments.


Big Rapids has Catholic, Congregational, Dutch Reformed. Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian and Swedish Lutheran churches, and an efficient public school system. Among the institutions of the place may be mentioned 2 banks, the Northern National, capital $90,000, and the banking house of F. Fairman, Esq. Three weekly newspapers, the Pioneer- Magnet and the Current, Rep., and the Herald, Dem. : the Holly system of water works, erected in 1871, at a cost of $6, - 000, a spacious and handsome opera house, a telephone exchange, and a ladies' library association, having over 600 volumes, The city is steadily improving, quite a number of brick blocks having lately been put up in the business portion of the town, with others in course of construction.
