The place has a flour mill, with 3 run of stones, and a planing mill, each run by water power. The nearest bank is at Fenton, 8 miles east. Stage to Linden daily, to Howell. Mondays and Thursdays. A settlement of 20 people, formed in 1860, and located on the east branch of Cass river, a small stream in the northeast- ern part of Sanilac county. ARMADA. .
The village of Armada lies about mid. way between Romeo and Ridgeway (Leuox P. O.), on the Michigan Air Line R. R., ?; miles from either place, and 49 by mail north of Detroit. It is a brisk incorporated village of 800 inhabitants, settled in 1830. in the northern part of Macomb county. Surrounded by a good agricultural coun- try, it has a prosperous trade, but its manu- facturing enterprises are limited, the ex- tensive fruit evaporating establishment of Mr. L. Granger, recently erected, being one of the most important. Flour, cheese. staves, handles, dried fruit and farm pro- duets are the chief shipments. There are 4 churches, Adventist, Baptist. Congrega- tionalist and Methodist, a good public hali and a weekly newspaper, the Armada 7:7- egraph. This paper has an extensive cir- culation throughout the surrounding coun- try and is an excellent advertising medi- um. Telegraph. Western Union. ARVON.
Was settled in 1872, and has a present population of about 150 It is in Arvon township, Baraga county, 12 miles east of L'Anse, the county seat, and station on the M., H. & O. R. R., to which point ship- ments for Arvon should be made. Exten- sive slate quarries are in the vicinity, and slate forms the chief exports. Postoffice discontinued.

ASHLAND.
A postoffice and station on the G. R. N. & L. S. R. R., the latter known as Grant, in Ashland township, Newaygo county. It is 3 miles north of Ashland station (Lake postoffice), and 6 south of Newaygo, the county seat.
ASHLAND CENTER.
A small place, settled in 1850, in the township of Ashland, southern part of Newaygo county. 8 miles southwest of Newaygo court house, and 2 west of Grant station on the G. R., N. & L. S. R. R., and 32 northwest of Grand Rapids. It is in a good farming district, and ships, wheat, butter, eggs and apples. Mail by special supply from Ashland (Grant station). Water power derived from the Hersey river operates a saw and shingle mid. The place has also a steam saw mill, and pro- sents a good opening for a dlouring mill. The fourth station out from Port Huron. on the P. II. & N. W. Ry, in Clyde township, St. Clair county. It is 72 miles by rail from Detroit, 20 south of Lexington, and 10 northwest of Port Hu- ron. At a point on Black river, near the station, a saw-mill, shingle mill and handle factory are operated, also a grist and card- ing mill. The station is known as Kings- ley. ATLAS.
Formerly called Davisonville, a post- village of 130 inhabitants, settled in 1838 in Atlas township, Genesee county, 12 miles southeast of Flint, the seat of justice, and 53 east of Grand Blanc, on the F. & P. M. Ry, its shipping point. Atlas has good available water power, and contains flouring and saw-mills, a machine shop, Baptist and Methodist churches, a general store, a hotel and a public school. ATTICA.
A beautifully located village of about 500 population, in the township of Attica, Lapeer conuty, on the C. & G. T. R1, 8 miles east of Lapeer (court house), 38 west of Port Huron, and 60 north of Detroit. Attica was settled in 1853 as a lumbering village, and the postoffice established in 1870. It is surrounded by a fine undula- ting section of country, interspersed with small lakes and woodlands. The soil. : sandy loam, is well adapted to agriculture. and improved farms command an average value of $25 per acre: unimproved land from $6 to $12 per acre. Lumber, grain.
