BRUTUS.
A postoffice and small place on Maple river, in the township of Maple River, Emmet county. The settlement was made in 1873, and consists of a hotel, store, and two or three dwellings. The population of the township is 90. Maple river affords an abundance of water power, presenting a good opening for a saw and grist mill. Bru- tus is 16 miles northeast of Little Traverse, the county seat, and 18 from Petoskey, the nearest railroad point, to which places a stage runs daily: fare to either point, $1.50. Mail, daily. BUCHANAN.
A prominent manufacturing town on the M. C. R. R., in the township of Buchanan, southeastern part of Berrien county, wa
platted in the spring of 1837, and incorpo. rated as a village in 1858. It is located at the confluence of McCoy creek and the St. Joseph river, whence excellent water power is derived, and, to some extent .: utilized, 2 flouring mills and a furniture factory being operated by it. The other manufactories are 4 or more in furniture (this being a branch of industry for which Buchanan is specially noted), 1 plow fac tory, 2 lumber mills, a zinc collar pad fac- tory, a brick yard, a foundry, a cider mill. a large carriage and wagon works, andl others of minor importance. There are 6 churches-2 Adventist, Christian, Metho- dist, Presbyterian and United Brethren- and a very fine public school building. which cost $40,000. The First National Bank was organized in 1872, with a cash capital of $50,000 and a liberal surplus. The aggregate business done by this insti- tution annually is over $6,000,000. Many of the private residences are models of ele- gance and refined taste. The Buchanan Reporter and the Berrien County Record are published weekly, the latter by John G. Holmes. The village has a neat opera house, a township library of about SU!) volumes, and a good hotel, the Dunbar House. The surrounding country com- prises some of the most productive farm ing land to be found in the state, and pro- duces every class of farm products, inclu i ing berries and fruit. The exports are largely composed of furniture, lumber. flour, fruit, live stock and grain. The M. C. R. R. and connections afford direct communication with Kalamazoo, distant 47 miles. Burlington Station, on the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R., lies 2 miles south, but Tekonsha, 5 miles east, is the usual ship- ping point. The place has 3 churches- Adventist, Baptist and Methodist-and a graded school. St. Joseph river affords the power for operating a flour mill, saw and shingle mill. It has also a steam saw- mill. A pleasant incorporated village of 1,000 inhabitants, is located on the L. S. & M. S. Ry. in the township of Burr Oak. southeastern part of St. Joseph county. It is 175 miles southwest of Detroit, IS west of Coldwater, 6 cast of Sturgis and 16 southeast of Centreville, the conaty seat. The surrounding country is rosios and consists largely of oak openings. The soil, a rich sandy loam, is generally well cultivated, and farms range in value from $35 to $75 per acre. During 1879 farm
