A small settlement in Shelby township, Oceana county, 84 miles south of Hart, the county seat, and 3 east of Shelby, its sta- tion, on the C. & W. M. R. R. At pres- ent it has no postoffice.


BLUE LAKE.


About 6 miles west of Holton on the Big Rapids Br. C. & W. M. R. R., situ- ated in Blue Lake township, northern part 1


of Muskegon county. Has possibly 20 in- habitants, but no postoffice.


BLUFFTON.


A brisk lumbering village of 600 inhal)- itauts, in Lakeside township, Muskegon county. It is at the mouth of Muskegon lake, 5 miles west of Muskegon, the county seat, with which it has communication by steam ferry three times a day; fare, 25 cents. The C. & W. M. R. R. is being ex- tended to this point, thus giving it a direct outlet by rail. The village is the location of 3 steam saw-mills, and exports lumber, lath, shingles, etc. It has a Union church and good public school. Bank, Lumber- man's National, Muskegon. Mail, daily.

A small village on the G. R. & I. R. R .. in Boyne Valley township, Charlevoix county. It is on the Boyne river, from which power is derived for the saw mill and handle factory of J. Powers & Son, who have a large business here in the man- ufacture of hardwood lumber, furniture, Mone boats, broom and cant hook handles, etc. The settlement was born in 1973. and now has a population of 195. It is 20 miles southeast of Charlevoix, the county seat, 16 south of Petoskey, and 124 north of Grand Rapids. Located in a pine tim- ber region of country, little farming is done


as yet, and the chief exports are lumber and timber products. Land commands from $7 to $12 per acre. The State Fish Commission has established a hatchery here. Express, United States. Telegraph. A postoffice situated on the town line road between Brandon and Oxford town- ships, in Oakland county, 40 miles above Detroit, 14 north of Pontiac, the county seat, and 3} west of Oxford on the D. & B. BREEDSVILLE.


A thriving town on the C. & W. M. R. R., in the northern part of Van Buren county. township of Columbia, 18 miles northwest of Paw Paw. the seat of justice, 30 north of St. Joseph and 16 by rail southeast of South Haven. The place was originally settled in 1835, and now has a population of 500. It is on Black river, and is the seat of considerable manufacturing, hav- ing 2 tanneries, 3 or more saw-mills, a flouring mill. 4 staves and cooperage, 2 cider mills and manufacturers of furniture, wagons, etc. The country to the north partakes of a lumbering character, but in other directions it is fine for agricultural purposes, and grain, berries and fruit are largely cultivated. The place has United Brethren and Methodist churches, a graded school, and offices of the Western Union Telegraph and American Express Co's. Shipments ir 1879, 6.000,000 lbs.
