The city is situated on the D .. G. H. & M. Ry. 22 miles west of Flint. 75 northwest of Detroit, and 3 east of Cor- unna, via which it is 39 miles south of Saginaw, and 30 north of Lansing. The surrounding country contains some of the finest and best tilled farms in this portion of the State, wheat being the staple cereal. Live stock, hogs, wool and dairy products are also largely shipped. Corunna has a Na- tional bank, with a capital of $50,000, three weekly newspapers, the Shimassee Ameri- can, the Shinmasse County Atlas, and the Shiawassee Journal. several good hotels. flourishing lodges of the various secret and benevolent orders, a ladies' library of over 1,000 volumes. 5 church edifices, Baptist, Episcopal .: Methodist, Presbyterian and Roman Cathor's, and ample school facili- tics. First settled in 1862. and known also as Hughesville, has a present population of 150. It is a station the F. & P. M. Ry, on the line between Birch Run township, Saginaw county, and Vienna township, Genesee county; 15 miles north of Flint, IN south of Saginaw and 75 above Detroit. It has a Catholic church and free school, is in a timbered section, and ships lumber, hoops, staves, heading and farm products. Bank at Flint. Value of farming land, $25 to $50 per acre. A village in Covert township, Van Buren county, settled in 1850, and having a popu- lation of about 250. The people in the vicinity are chiefly engaged in fruit rais- ing. Covert is 27 miles west of Paw Paw, the county seat, S south of South Haven, and an equal distance north of Watervliet station on the C. & W. M. R. R., both of which are used as shipping points, and connected by tri-weekly mail stage; fare to either 35 cents. It is 3 miles back from the Michigan lake shore, at Paulville pier; has a Congregational . church, district school and a steam flour and saw-mill. Lumber, bark, wood and fruit are shipped. CROSWELL.
A thriving village of 600 inhabitants, settled in 1844 as Davisville, and located on Black river, in Lexington township. Sani- lac county. It is on the P. H. & N. W. Rv. 30 miles north of Port Huron, 20 south- cast of Sandusky. the new county seat, and 90 above Detroit. The river furnishes a valuable water power, and the village is the location of numerous and substantial industries. Among these are 2 flouring mills, a planing mill, brick yard, soap fac- tory, several good stores, a weekly news- paper, 3 churches, Episcopal, Presbyterian and Methodist, and a good public school. A village of 275 inhabitants, is located at the junction of the Big and Little Mus- kegon rivers, in Croton township, Neway- go county, 8 miles east of Newaygo and 12 west of Howard City.
