EDUCATIONAL.

The city is favored with the most etti- cient and prosperous union school in the state. Students in large numbers from this and other states attend the high school while preparing for admission to the Uni- versity. The Ann Arbor high school fur- nishes yearly a much larger number of students to the University than any other institution of learning. In addition to the high school building, which alone cost about $60,000, there are five ward schools for the younger portion of resident pupils.

THE UNIVERSITY.

Ann Arbor is especially known as the seat of the University of Michigan. with its departments of Literature. Science and the Arts, the Medical, including the Old School of Medicine, the Homeopathic Col- lege and the Dental College, the Law de- partment, its schools of Mining and Civil Engineering, and its extensive laboratory of Chemistry and Pharmacy. The several departroents contain 1,42; students. 120 of whom are ladies, who are admitted into all the departments upon the same terms

and conditions as gentlemeu. In its com- plete and thoroughi courses of study, and in the number of students who annually flock here for thorough culture from every part of the world, and in the number and size of its buildings and extensive and beautiful grounds, this institution ranks among the first in the United States. Among the most recent and important ad- ditions to the University are the hospitals. The first building was erected in 1875 aud the second in 1879, for public hospitals. They are fully equipped, and ample pro- vision has now been made for patients from this and other States. There are ac- commodations for 200 patients. A cut of the University may be seen on the opposite page.

By her various railroad connections Ann Arbor is 38 miles west of Detroit, 37 east of Jackson, 74 southwest of Lansing. 40 southwest of Pontiac. 234 cast of Chicago, and 46 northwest of Toledo. A tri-weekly stage runs to Whitmore Lake and Brighton : fare, 50 cents and $1 respectively. C. G. Clark, postmaster.

THE

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

CONSISTS OF SIX DEPARTMENTS OR SCHOOLS.

The Department of Literature, Science, and the Arts ; the Department of Medicine and Surgery; the Department of Law; the Homeopathic Medical College; the Dental School, and the School of Pharmacy.

Each department has its own faculty of instruction. In 1879-80, its officers of instruction num bered more than fifty: its students. 1.127. The department of Literature, Science and the Arts. has six regular courses. leading respectively to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Letters (Latin), Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineer, Mining Engineer. Bachelor of Letters (English). All the degrees and all the courses of studies. whether Classical. English or Scientific. receive equal attention. and no discrimination is made whatever in favor of either. About half of the studies in all the courses. save the engineering, are elective. If a student is able to complete his full course in less than four years, he is allowed to do so. and receive his degree. Each one is permitted to do all he can. and receives credit for his work. Students under twenty-one years of age, who are prepared to enter any regular course, may pursue select. studies without taking a degree. Students who are at least twenty-one years of age, may enter without examination and pursue such studies as they desire. provided their previous education fits them to carry on work in the department. Post-graduate courses are provided for graduates of the University, or of any other collegiate institution. In the depart- ment of Medicine and Surgery, students matriculating in 1880, or afterwards, are required. in order to graduate, to attend lectures ou three courses of nine months each.

In the Law Department, the candidates for graduation are required to attend two courses of lec- tures of six months each. A year's course in another law school, or one term's practice of law under a license from the highest court of general jurisdiction in any state, is accepted as an equivalent for the first year in this department. The degree of Bachelor of Laws from this school entitles the holder to an immediate license to practice in all the courts of Michigan.

In the Homeopathic Medical College, attendance on three courses of nine months each is a pre requisite to graduation. The students of both medical schools have the advantages of special training in a well-equipped physiological laboratory, and of clinical instruction in spacious and well-appointed hospitals, which the generosity of the State and the city of Ann Arbor have furnished. The Dental School affords the largest facilities for instruction. In addition to the lectures of the Rental Faculty. the lectures of the Medical Faculty are heard by the dental students, and superior clinical opportunt. tes are also furnished. Attendance on two six months' courses is required for graduation The student of Pharmacy has a thorough two years' course, mainly in Botany, Chemistry and Materia Medica; leading to the degree of Pharmaceutical Chemid- The splendid Chemical Laboratory, which Has been doubled in capacity in the last year, has aver os pables. the largest in the world, is open to the students in the various departments. The Museum of Service and Art is one of great value, and has been transferred to the new building erected this year. The Corelogical, 7 sological and Botanical Cabinets are estimated to contain with specimens.

The Museums of Anatomy and Materia Jelica are also very large. The Astronomical servatory. created by citizens of Detroit, is thoroughly equipped, and has contributed largely to astronomical discoveries of late years
