An incorporated village of 640 inhabi- fants, in the northern part of Gratiot county. It is on the line between Arcada and Pine River townships, and is the west- ern terminus of the Saginaw Valley & St. Louis R. R .. and a station on the Chicago. Saginaw & Canada R. R., 33 miles west of St. Louis, 37 west of Saginaw, 8} north- west of Ithaca, the county seat, and 125 northwest of Detroit. Pine river affords good water power. The, surrounding country embraces farming land of very fair quality, and an extensive lumbering region lies tributary to the town. These com- bined advantages render it a favorable point for manufacturing and business eu- trprises. Among the interests here are a woolen mill, a flouring mill, a foundry and


machine shop, farm implement factory. panel factory, several saw-mills, a feed mill and elevator with a capacity of 7,000 bushels, a bank, a large public hall, seating capacity 1,000, a good graded public school, and a weekly newspaper, the Inder. The churches are Baptist, Adventist, Congre- gational and Methodist. Building improve- ments to the value of 825,000 have been made during the past year. Unimproved farm land ranges in value from $5 to $12 per acre. and improved farms at from $15 to $40 per acre. A stage affords commu- nication with St. Johns, 30 miles south, daily. Express, American. ALPENA.


Is a growing city, situated at the head of Thunder Bay aud at the mouth of Thun- der Bay river, 230 miles north of Detroit and 120 from Bay City. It is the county seat of Alpena county, and at the last cen- sns numbered 6,284 inhabitants, being the largest and most important town the west coast of Lake Huron north of Bay City. Its chief business is the many. facture of pine lumber, and fishing. It contains 11 large lumber millsand 1 shingh mills, which cut annually an average of 125,000,000 feet of logs. The fisheries. which are extensive, employ 250 men, and during the best of the fishing season an


average of 10 tons of fish are shipped daily. The river affords power for only one mill. and is used principally for shipping lumber from the mills and for the steamboat trade. There are ? church organizations, Congre gational, Episcopal, Baptist, Methodist. Catholic, Norwegian Lutheran, and Dutch Reformed, all of which have good houses of worship. There are 10 public schools. with 12 teachers and 875 scholars: also a large Catholic parochial school; a public library of 2,500 volumes; 1 monthly and 3; weekly newspapers. The principal busi- ness blocks are built of brick. The new court house, a beautiful edifice, cost to build $20.000, and the opera house is our of the handsomest in Northern Michigan. The principal hotels are the Fletcher House, Alpena House. Golling House. Eagle and Globe Hotels. The city is pro- vided with a paid fire department, and the Holly system of water works, which was put in at a cost of $65,000. The bay form- an excellent and capacious harbor, and a safe refuge for vessels from the fury of storms. The city has no railroad connec- tions, but a daily line of boats runs to Bax City during the season of navigation. and a daily line of stages to Standish during winter, distance 90 miles. Three steam- boats ply each week between this port and Detroit, Cleveland, Mackinac and interme. diate points.


The land directly contiguous is light and sandy, but the greater portion of the coun- ty is a rich, friable soil, producing wheat rye, oats, barley, and roots in great abun. dance. Average vahie. $65 per acre. Alpena was incorporated as a city in 18;1. and has grown from 2,500 inhabitants in 1870 to its present number. It is enter- prising, lively, full of business, and is des tined to remain the metropolis of the shore. A mineral spring of considerable note here is much resorted to by invalids. Telegraph.
