A country postoffice in the township of Calvin, Cass county, 10 miles southeast of Cassopolis, the county seat, 6 south of Vandalia, the nearest railway station, and 165 southwest of Detroit. The country around is timbered, possesses good soil. and produces grain, fruit, potatoes, grass, etc., was settled about 1834, and is now thickly populated. Contains about 300 inhabitants, and is in Cambria township, Hillsdale county. 7} miles southwest of Hillsdale, the county seat, which is its usual shipping point, and 98 from Detroit. A branch of the St. Joseph, upon which it is located. affords water power to one of the best flouring and saw-mills in the southern part of the state. The surrounding country is timber land, with a good soil, well settled, and improved, the average value of farms being $60 per acre. Leading shipments, grain, poultry, dairy products, pork, grain and dried fruits. etc. Settled 1840. Stage daily to Hillsdale, with mail. George F. Houghtby, postmaster, appointed 1857.

A village of 200 inhabitants, settled in 1833. on a branch of the river Raisin, in the northwestern part of Lenawee county. township of Cambridge. It is 18 miles northwest of Adrian, the county seat, 31 from Brooklyn, on the D., H. & S. W. R. R., its railroad point, and 65 from Detroit. It is on the mail stage route from Te cuinsch to Brooklyn, with which places it has communication daily; fare, 75 cents and 25 cents. The surrounding country is undulating and interspersed with lake- and springs. Wheat, wool, pork, apples aud peaches are shipped. Nearest bank. Brooklyn. A shoemaker would do well here. Charles H. Also called Camden Center, was settled in 1835, and is located in Camden town- "hip, in the southwestern part of Hillsdale county. Montgomery and Reading, on the Ft. W. & J. R. R., distant respectively 4 and 5 miles, are the nearest railroad twints, the latter the usual shipping depot. Distance to Hillsdale 16 miles, to Detroit 107 miles. CANADA CORNERS.


A postoffice established April, 1880, in Casnovia township, Muskegon county. It is 3 miles east of Casnovia, a station on the G. R., N. & L. S. R. R., and 22 east of Muskegon court house. Mail by stage daily.


CANANDAIGUA.


A village settled about the year 1834, in the southwestern part of Lenawee county, 16 miles from Adrian, the county seat. It is on the daily mail route between Hudson, on the L. S. & M. S. Ry, and Morenci, on the Fayette branch C. S. Ry. Clayton, on the former road, 43 miles north, is its shipping point. Water power for a tour- ing mill is derived from Tiflin river, which, with a steam saw-mill and wagon gearing works, comprise the manufacturing inter- ests. There are 2 churches, Congregational and Methodist, and a good public school. Population, about 200. Mail, daily. Hope Welch, postmaster.

Formerly known as Can, a postoffice and small settlement located on Pigeon river, in Grant township, Huron county, 13 miles southeast of Bad Axe, the county seat, 16 cast of Sebewaing, with which it has weekly communication by stage, and 24 northeast of Caro, the nearest railroad station. The settlement dates from 1867, and has a population of about 25. Value of land in the neighborhood, from $6 to $20 per acre. Fare to Sebewaing, $1. Mail, weekly. C. G. W. CANNONSBURG.


A pleasant village of some 300 popula- tion,, settled in 1837, and situated 16 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, in Canon township, Kent county. It is in a hard- wood timber country, well settled and highly productive, and contains 2 churches and a good Union school. Bear creek sup- plies excellent water power, operating a grist mill, saw-mill, planing mill and cider mill. Ada, on the D., G. H. & M. Ry. and Belmont, ou the G. R. & I. R. R., each 8 miles distant, are shipping stations. Wheat, flour, apples, peaches, cider, wool, etc., are shipped. Stage, with mail, to Belmont tri-weekly. Nearest bank at Grand Rapids. C. L. Settled in 1866, and situated in Brock- way township, northern part of St. Clair county, 24 miles northwest of Port Huron. the county seat, and 69 north of Detroit. The postoffice at a locality known as Shel- don's Corners, three-quarters of a mile north of Secord's, a flag station ou the M. C. R. R., 5 miles west of Wayne, and 22 west of Detroit. Denton, 3 miles west, is the usual shipping point. The surround- ing country is level and comprises excel lent farming lands. Grain. hay, apples. cheese, butter and eggs are shipped. Settled, 1820. S. Ry. It is in Ash township, northeast- ern part of the county, 10 miles due north of Monroe, the county seat, 12 west of Trenton, and 27 southwest of Detroit. Carleton was settled in 1872, has about 500 inhabitants, and is the seat of a number of manufacturing and business interests. A saw-mill, a stave mill, boop factory, brick yard, flouring mill and scale board factory, all run by steam power, a good hotel and a substantial brick school building. Hard- wood lumber, staves, heading, hoops, scale boards, charcoal, brick, and farm products are shipped. Improved land, $50 per acre; unimproved, from $10 to $20. Nearest bank at Monroe. Was settled in 1836 and has 100 inhab- itants, located on little Thornapple river. in Carlton township. Barry county. on the daily mail stage route from Lowell, Kent county. distant 22 miles, to Hastings, the seat of justice, distant 7 miles. Fare to the former 75 cents, to the latter 25 cents. CARO.


The county seat of Tuscola county, is situated on the Cass river, in Indian Field township, near the center of the county. It is an incorporated village of 1,600 pop- ulation, and the center of an extensive lumber traffic. The Caro Br. of the D. & B. C. R. R., connecting with the main line at Vassar. 13 miles southwest, termin- ates here. By this line three trains arrive and depart daily. The county buildings are built of brick and stone and are of a handsome and substantial character. There are 8 religious organizations, hav- ing 4 church edifices, with 2 others under contract. An opera house with a seating capacity of 600; 3 centrally located and well-managed hotels, the Caro House being first class. There are some fine brick business blocks, over one hundred and fifty places of business, including stores, offices and shops and one of the best graded schools to be found in the state. Three newspapers are published. the Advertiser, established in 1868: the Citizen, founded 1879, and the Jeffersonian. first issued in 1880. Three grain elevators. 2 banks, 3 flouring mills, 2 foundries, 4 planing mills, 2 saw-mills, 1 brick yard, cte. Caro is the shipping point for about one-half of Tuscola county, and it has a large trade with portions of Huron and Sanilac. Stage lines daily to Sebewaing with mail and express, and to Ellington, Gagetown, Elmwood, Cass City and Bad Axe, tri-weekly. Caro was settled in 1857. It has good water power and is surrounded by a fine agricultural country, producing all the grains and root crops.
