CADILLAC.
The city of Cadillac is located 98 miles north of Grand Rapids, on the G. R. & I. R. R., in the southeasterly part of Wex- ford county, at the foot of Little Clam Lake, which, with Big Clam Lake. to which it is connected by a canal, lie west of the city, and afford floatage for lumber- ing business. This place was first settled in the fall of 1871, previous to which time it was the heart of an unbroken wilder- ness, surrounded with pine forests, inter- spersed with much valuable hard wood timber.
The late Hon. George A. Mitchell was one of the founders of the place, who, with O. A. Simons and C. E. Gorham, of Fort Wayne, purchased a large tract of land in the county, and by his liberal and public-spirited course gave the town a rapid growth and solid basis, in all things looking to the general welfare more than the building up of private monopoly. Ilis untimely death, in August, 1878, was a serious loss to the city.
The place was first incorporated as the village of Clam Lake in May, 1874. and had, by the census of that year, a popula tion, including the township, of 1,046. In March, 1877, it was incorporated as the city of Cadillac, taking its name from De La Motte Cadillac, the French command- ant who, while in command at Mackinaw in 1694, conceived the plan of founding a permanent settlement at Detroit, which he carried out in 1701, and was the first post

founded on the lower peninsula. The population of Cadillac, by the census of 1880, is nearly 3,000, and probably is con- siderably larger at the present time.
Water Works were completed and put in Operation in September, 1878, furnish- ing an ample supply of pure, soft water for private and public uses. The city is out of debt and growing rapidly, and is the center of the lumbering interest of northern Michigan. Over 100,000,000 feet of lumber were shipped in 1880, and im- mense amounts of supplies furnished to the numerous lumber camps in Wexford and Missaukee counties. The receipts of the G. R. & I. R. R. at this point are larger than at any other station on its entire line, and comprise one-fourth of all the freight business north of Grand Rapids.
There are tive churches-Presbyterian, Methodist Episcopal, Lutheran, Catholic and Free Methodist-and a graded school, with ? teachers and upwards of 600 pupils.
Of Masons there is a strong and prosper- ous lodge and chapter, also Odd Fellows, Knights of Honor and Good Templars, and 4 first-class hotels, all doing a heavy business.
The postoffice, under the efficient man- agement of Jared H. Hixson, shows the fol- lowing figures for 1880:
Receipts from stamp sales, etc. $4,458 22
Receipts from box rents 518 40
Total $4,976 62
The business of the postoffice has actu- ally doubled in 2 years. Express, United States. Telegraph, G. R. & I. R. R. Co.'s line.
