CHARLOTTE.

Is situated 2 miles south of the geo- graphical center of the county of Eaton, of which it is the seat of justice. The site was originally a level prairie, dotted with burr oaks and surrounded by heavily timbered lands. - The first settlement was made in 1839, and in 1863, when the place contained 817 inhabitants, it became an in- corporated village. In 1871 a city charter was obtained, the population then being 2,300. According to the census of 1880 it contains 3,000 inhabitants. The Grand Rapids Div. M. C. R. R. crosses the C. & G. T. Ry at this point, affording competi- tion in traffic both east and west. By these lines it is 19 miles southwest of Lansing, 35 northwest of Jackson, 59 southeast of Grand Rapids, and 104 west of Detroit. No finer stores are to be found in any city of its size in the west, and its business men are live, active and thriving.

Charlotte has 3 excellent hotels, an opers house, seating 800, 2 banks, 2 newspapers -- the Republican and Leader-5 churches, excellent school buildings, and some fine residences. It has also a valuable public circulating library, of about 1,500 vol- umes, managed by an efficient board of directors, and generously patronized by the people. The city hasa bonded debt of $15,400 in railroad bonds and $4,000 in school bonds, and an assessed valuation of $1,360,225, which is full value.

The Eaton County Agricultural Society grounds are within the limits. They are nicely arranged, and one of their most marked features is a grove of about ten acres, through one corner of which flows Battle creek. The county jail, situated here, is the admiration of all who see it.

During 1871 many public improvements were made, and the like have steadily increased to the present time. It bas s steam fire department, and one of Silsby's third size engines, and one of the most expensively uniformed and well trained cornet bands in the State.

No healthier place can be found, and its inhabitants are moral and cultivated. Mail stage to Kalamo tri-weekly: fare, 50 cents.

The Western Union Telegraph and American Express furnish telegraph and express facilities. F. E. Iweiter, post- master.

CHEBOYGAN.

This flourishing village, the county seat of Cheboygan county, is located within about 18 miles of the extreme northern point of the lower peninsula of Michigan. It is at the mouth of the Cheboygan river, on what is known as McLeod's bay, and has a good harbor and steamboat dock. The river is spanned by a draw-bridge, and by slack water, by means of a lock having a rise of 10 feet, is made navigable for over 30 miles, connecting Mullet and Burt lakes with the Straits of Mackinac. It will be the nothern terminus of the Mackinaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., which is expected to reach this point during the summer of the present year (1881). The completion of this road will add greatly to the growth and importance of the place, and it will, no doubt, become one of the most promi- neut points on the northern shore of the lower peninsula. The first settlement was made here in 1846. and the place incorpo- rated in 18:1. Present population about 2,500. It has 6 saw-mills, cutting annu- ally 50.000,000 feet of lumber. There are 4 handsome churches, a $10.000 l'nion school building, 5 hotels and one weekly newspaper, the Northern Tribune. Lum- ber, lath, shingles, broom handles and fish are shipped. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, MeClure & Co.'s A line of stages run to Petoskey daily, and to Mack inac City tri-weekly. Fare, $2.50 and $2. respectively. During the season of bavi
