ALLEGAN.

The judicial seat and principal town of Allegan county, is situated in a valley on the banks of the Kalamazoo river, which here affords an invaluable water power, including the whole volume of the stream with a fall of 8 feet. Water communication is afforded with Lake Michigan by steam- boat daily, and it has three intersecting lines of railway, the Kalamazoo Div. L. S. & M. S. Ry, the Grand Haven R. R., and the Allegan and S. E. Br. G. R. & L. R. R. By these lines it is 25 miles northwest of Kalamazoo, 30 south of Grand Rapids, 23 southeast of . Holland, and 169 west of Detroit. A settlement was located here in 1835. In 1838 the village was incorporated by the Legislature, and re-incorporated in 1858. The manufacturing interests of the place are extensive and varied, including 4 dour mills, 1 saw-mill. 1 furniture factory. 2 foundries, 1 fauning mill factory, 1 wool- en mill. 1 sash and door factory, a spring bed factory, etc.

There are ? churches of as many denom- inations, 5 ward schools with an enrolled list of 685 pupils, 2 libraries with 500 and 900 volumes respectively, a large public hall, an efficient fire department, and the Holly system of water works. Among the prominent buildings are the Presbyterian church, county buildings, fair ground buildings, and a mimber of large and really handsome business blocks. The vil- lage has a bonded indebtedness of $19,800, and an enrolled valuation of $250,000, which is considerably below its actual worth. There are 2 banks, the First Na- tional and a private institution, 4 newspa- pers, the Journal, Democrat, Herald and Tribune, all weeklies, and 2 good hotels. Allegan is surrounded by rich and exceed- ingly productive land, which, by a thorough system of cultivation. is made to yield abun- dant crops of cereals and fruit, as a shipping point for which the place is one of the largest in the state. Exports in 1879, via the L. S. & M. S. Ry, 11,423 tons. Population, according to last cen- sus, 2,327. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American and United States. George R. Stone, postmaster.
