COLON.


A village of 425 inhabitants, located on the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R., and on the St. Joseph river, at the outlet of Swan creek, a stream affording good water power. It was settled in 1835, and orig- inally known as Bowman's Mills. The soil in the neighboring country is a rich


sandy loam, adapted to wheat and hay. which, with pork, wool, clover-eed, apples and poultry are largely shipped. The Baptists and Methodists have churches. the latter costing $3,500, recently com- pleted. A number of other improvements have recently been made, and still others are in contemplation. . A saw and flouring mill embrace the manufactories. Colon is in Colon township, near the eastern bor- der of St. Joseph county, 12 miles from Centerville, the county seat, 53 west of Jackson, and 130 west of Detroit.
