A thriving incorporated village on the main line M. C. R. R., in Ross township, Kalamazoo county, 14 miles east of Kala- mazoo, 9 west of Battle Creek and 130 west of Detroit. It is located on the Kalamazoo river, whence power is ob- tained for a flouring mill. the chief manu- facturing interest. Live stock, grain and dressed poultry are largely marketed here. The place has Baptist, Congregational and Methodist Episcopal churches, a graded school, with 4 teachers, a district and a ladies' library, with 100 and 350 vol- umes respectively. Population. 536. A place of about 250 inhabitants in Au- relius township, western part of Ingham county, 8 miles southwest of Mason, the county seat aud nearest bank location, 5 west of Eden, the nearest shipping point, ou the Saginaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., and about 100 from Detroit. It has a steam saw-mill, a Baptist church and a district school. Daily stage line with mail to Eden. Value of farms in vicinity. $60 per acre. AU SABLE.

The settlement of this place was origin- ally formed in 1849, and it became an in- corporated village in 1872. It is located at the month of the Au Sable river, in Au Sable township, Iosco county, and is a port of entry. Vast forests of pine abound in the immediate neighborhood, and the village is the center of extensive lumber and timber interests, the shipments for 1879 aggregating sixty million feet of lum- ber and sixteen million lath, besides large quantities of timber, barrel stock, etc. Fruit, fish, salt and ice are also exported. Among the improvements here are 3 churches-Catholic. Episcopal and Presby- terian-a graded public school, with 4 teachers and 586 pupils, 2 public halls. 3 steam saw mills, 4 hotels and a fire depart- ment with 2 hand engines. Improved farms average $25 per acre: unimproved land $5 and upwards. Distance to Tawas ('ity, the county seat, 15 miles, to Detroit 175. Population, 2,300. During the sea- son of navigation shipments are made via Bay City. . Stage communication daily during winter with Standish and AAlpena; fare to each. $4. Telegraph. Westera Union. Established as a postoffice in December. 1879. in the central part of Emmet county, 8 miles northeast of Little Traverse. It has mail by special supply from Brutus, 5 miles northeast.

BAD AXE.


The county seat of Huron county, was first settled in 1874, and is located on the line of Verona and Colfax townships, in the central part of the county, at the junc- tion of the roads leading from Port Aus- tin southward and Sand Beach westward, the two principal thoroughfares of the county. Sand Beach, on the P. H. & N. W. Ry, 18 miles east, is the nearest rail- road approach. The place, which has a population of 200, supports 2 churches. a steam saw-mill, a weekly newspaper- the Tribune -- and a public school. Near- est bank at Caro, 37 miles southwest. Wheat and cattle are exported. Mail stages run to Sand Beach daily, and to Port Austin tri-weekly: fare $1, and to Cass City and Caro weekly; fare $1.25 and $2.50 respectively. It is on the Pere Mar- quette river, has a flouring mill. hotel and several stores. A weekly newspaper, the Lake County Star, is published. Chief shipments, grain and potatoes. One of the most prosperous of the re- cent settlements along the line of the C. & G. T. Ry. is located in the township and county of Shiawassee, 9 miles southeast of Corunna, 30 northeast of Lansing, and 20 southwest of Flint. The improvements in building made here since the issue of our last volume amount to $45.000, and include 30 dwellings, 11 stores, a grain ele- vator, flouring mill, hotel, Seventh-Day Advent church, school house, planing mill and others.
