CHELSEA.


Which, according to the recent census, has a population of 1,800, was incorpor- ated as a village in 1861, and is located on the M. C. R. R., in the township of Syl- van, Washtenaw county, 18 miles west of . Ann Arbor, 21 east of Jackson. and 56 west of Detroit. The country tributary to Chelsea is very fertile, and is one of the surest wheat raising districts in the State. the soil being composed of a light sandy loam, combined with clay. The value of improved farms ranges from $60 to $80 per acre. The principal products and shipments are cereals, wool, fruits and berries. The place has no water power and but little manufacturing: it has churches representing the Baptist, Cath- olic, Congregational, Lutheran and Meth- odist denominations, a graded public school with 7 teachers and 350 pupils, and a weekly newspaper. A prosperous town ou the Shiawassee river, in the township of Chesaning. Sagi. uaw county. It is a station on the Saginaw Div. M. C. R. CHIPPEWA STATION.


On the F. & P. M. Ry, in Orient town- ship, Osceola county, is a place of about 100 inhabitants, is on the Chippewa river, and is the location of 2 saw-mills, a shingle mill and some other interests. A settlement located between Grass and Clam lakes, in Helena township, Antrim county. It is 3 miles in a direct line southwest of Bellaire, the county seat, 5 north of Spencer Creek, whence it receives a weekly mail, and about 10 northwest of Mancelona, on the G. R. & I. R. R.


CLARE.


An incorporated village of 850 inhabi. tants, was first settled in 1820, and located in Grant township, near the southern boundary of Clare county. It is a promi nent station on the F. & P. M. Ry, at the junction of the branch to Harrison with the main line, 50 miles northwest of Sagi-


naw, 39 east of Reed City, and 148 north- west of Detroit. Harrison, the county seat, is 19 miles north. Clare has ? churches -- Congregational and Methodist- a graded public school, with 125 pupils, a weekly newspaper, 3 hotels and several saw and shingle mills. Much of the con- tiguous country is covered with a heavy growth of pine and hardwood timber, but it contains some rich agricultural land. specially adapted to the culture of wheat and grass. The shipments are shingles, hoops, staves, flour, wheat and general pro- duce. Among the recent improvements are a new town hall and a grain elevator. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union. A station on the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R., in Calhoun county, 4 miles west of Homer.

CLARION. .


A station on the G. R. & I. R. R., in Melrose township, northeastern part of Charlevoix county, 25 miles east of Char- levoix court house. The first family set- tled here in 1877, but the settlement proper was not begun until the spring of 1880, since which time a saw-mill, store, several dwellings and a handsome public school house have been erected. It is in an ex- cellent farming region, has abundance of


game and brook trout, and is near ex- tensive forests of hardwood and hemlock timber. Banking transacted at Petoskey. Price of land, from $6 to $20 per acre. Population, 40. Mail, daily. John E. Darrah, postmaster.

CLARKSBURG.


A discontinued postoffice and station on .the M., H. & O. R. R., 26 miles west of Marquette. Population, estimated at 500.


CLARKSTON.


A pleasant village of 400 inhabitants, in Independence township, Oakland county, 10 miles northwest of Pontiac, the county seat, 2 miles north of its station, on the D., G. H. & M. Ry, and 35 northwest of Detroit. The Clinton river furnishes a limited water power, operating one flouring mill. The village has Methodist and Baptist churches, a good Union school, a recently formed library of 100 volumes. offices of the American Express and Western Union Telegraph, and other sub- stantial business interests. Stage to Austin tri-weekly, and to Oxford semi-weekly: fare to each, 75 cents. Mail, daily. Mrs. Phebe J. Abbey, postmaster.
