CHAPTER XII.
NORWAY NEW SETTLERS, 1797 TO 1853.
SCATTERED along through the History of Norway, by David Noyes, in connection with yearly happenings, are lists of persons supposed to have come into town during the year previous, or who had become of age and were liable to be taxed, during that time. In the early years, from the time of the incorporation to 1805, Mr. Noyes does not pretend to give the exact year when certain persons came, but only approxi- mately. These lists are taken from the valuation books which were destroyed by fire in 1843, and are worth preserving. The reader will understand that they do not show with absolute certainty the precise year when a person came, because the period between two different successive valuations covers a portion of two years; it only shows that he came in one of the two years covering the valuation period. Not all the persons named in these lists became permanent residents of Norway ; many of them were men without families, and only temporary residents. Persons familiar with the early settlers of the surrounding towns will recognize the names of many of them who, for a short time, were residents of Norway, and are mentioned in these lists. In many cases they were employed as hired help upon the farms. The following lists are taken from Mr. Noyes' work.
1797 TO 1802
The following persons came into the town from the time of incorpo- ration up to, and within, the year 1800, viz. : Cad F.
