PAUL.
ALFRED K. PAUL was born in Rockland, Maine, April 25, 1845. He served in the First Maine Heavy Artillery in the late war, and was wounded in the engagement in front of Petersburgh, June 18, 1865. After the war he was chief clerk in the Pension Agency at Port- land, until the office was removed from the State. He afterward served as clerk in the Quartermaster's Department of the regular army. He came to Norway in April, 1883, and has since been proprietor of the Beals Ilotel. He married, in October, 1872, Mary E. Hatch. Children : -

WILLIAM PIERCE was born in New Gloucester, September 27, 1781, was married in 1812 to Betsey Wells, of New Gloucester, whose parents were from Ipswich, and whose mother's maiden name was Martha Burnham. Mr. Pierce came to Norway in 1812, and settled on a partly cleared farm in the northwest part of the town. June 25, 1826, while felling trees with others, a tree fell upon him, injuring his spine, so that he died the following day. His wife was left to bring up six children, but she brought to the task energy and perseverance, and managed the farm and cared for her children until they could take care of themselves. Children : -

ALBERT F. PIKE, son of Luther F. Pike, born in Norway, October 8, 1848, married, October 16, IS72, Ellen R. Andrews, who was born in Otisfield, May 6, 1851. He is Secre- tary of the Odd Fellows Graded Mutual Relief Association. Children : -

PINGREE.
MOSES PINGREE,1 from England, was a freeman in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1641. He married Abigail Clement, who came from London in 1642. He died January 2, 1669, aged eighty-six years, and his wife died January 16, 1676. He was deacon of the church, select- man, and deputy to the General Court.
AARON PINGREE,2 son of the preceding, born in 1652, married Ann, daughter of John Pickard, of Rowley, and died in 1697. His wife died February 20, 1716. He moved to Rowley in 1696.
JOB PINGREE,3 son of the preceding, born in Ipswich, October 17, 1688, married Elizabeth Brocklebank, November 1, 1717, who died February 12, 1747, and he married second, Dorothy Doad, of Topsfield ; he married third, Mrs. Elizabeth Platts. He died April 25, 1785, aged ninety-six and one-half years.
SAMUEL ELIOT PINGREE,4 born January 12, 1719, married Elizabeth, daughter of Ebenezer Carlton. He lived in Methuen, and died there aged thirty-five.
STEPHEN PINGREE,5 born August 7, 1752, in Methuen, married, September 21, 1773, Ruth Hoyt, of the same town. They moved to New Salem, New Hampshire, thence moved to Derryfield in 1785, and to Norway in 1808, having been here and selected his lot at the north- west part of the town, some five years previous. His seven sons and one daughter were subsequently residents in the same neighborhood. He was a Revolutionary soldier, served

under Washington in New York, and was granted a pension. He was intelligent, industrious and a valuable citizen. He died April 30, 1840, and she died October 21, 1836. Children : -

II. Samuel, b. October 3, 1778; m. Esther Dickey (nee Perham) of Manchester, New Hampshire; came to Norway in 1803, and died here February 15, 1837.
III. Stephen, b. September 19, 1780; m. Jane Bancroft ; a farmer and blacksmith, moved from Norway to Albany; d. March 20, 1874.
IV. Abner, b. May 20, 1782 ; m. Dorcas Stearns, of Manchester ; moved to Norway, and then to Montpelier, Vermont, and died there in 1840.
V. Hezekiah, b. December 7, 1783; m. Polly Turner; lived in Norway, Albany, and in Riley Plantation; d. October 20, 1850.
VI. John, b. March 14, 1786; went to New York.
VII. Hoyt, b. May 14, 1779; m. Sarah Turner, of Durham, Maine. They had twelve children. He died in Waterford, June 23, 1865; his wife died in 1876, aged eighty-six years.
VIII. William, b. January 16, 1792 ; m. Eleanor, daughter of Joel Stevens.

WILLIAM PINGREE, youngest son of Stephen and Ruth (Hoyt) Pingree, was born in Derry- tfield, New Hampshire, June 16, 1792, came to Norway from Londonderry, and married Eleanor, daughter of Joel Stevens, who was born in Gray, July 29, 1790. Children : -
