JOSHUA POOL was the third post-rider in this town. He came from Bridgewater, Massa- chusetts to Minot and from thence to Norway. He was probably a son of Joshua Pool, who died in East Bridgewater, in 1822, aged eighty-eight. He married in 1783, Lucinda, daughter of Thomas Latham, of Bridgewater, and a sister of Stephen Latham, our early nail-maker. He was a Revolutionary pensioner and died in Greenwood, August 23, 1844, aged eighty-two. Children : -

CHARLES PORTER was born in North Yarmouth, June 19, 1794, and married Rachel, daugh- ter of William and Rachel (Lufkin) Hamilton, of North Yarmouth, January 21, 1816. She was born July 19, 1794. He settled on a farm in Paris, and afterward moved to South Paris Village, where he remained the rest of his life. He died April 3, 1861; she died January I, 1877. Children : -

JONATHAN POTTLE came into Norway quite early. He was born in Rochester, New Hamp- shire, December 12, 1773. He married, at Rochester, January 6, 1796, Sarah Jenkins, who was born in Durham, New Hampshire, June 26, 1769. Children : -

CHARLES A. PRIDE, a shoe-cutter, born in Waterford, May 30, 1853, came to this town in 1876. His father is David G. Pride, born in Waterford, November 23, 1824, and his mother, Martha Marston, of Norway, born May 28, 1833. His grandfather was Josiah Pride, of Falmouth, and his grandmother, Sophia Fairbanks, of Berlin, Massachusetts. He married, February 5, 1876, Rosa A. Marston, of Albany, who was born September 2, 1852. No children.
PURINTON.
AMOS PURINTON, son of Robert and Betsey (Hall) Purinton, born in Falmouth, January 17, 1799, married, October 2, 1828, Abigail Hatch, daughter of Titus O. Brown, and with his father-in-law Brown kept the tavern at the village. He afterward moved to Andover, and died there very suddenly, July 22, 1871. Children : -

REED.
JOHN REEDI was the first American ancestor of the Reeds of Norway. He was born in England, in 1598, and came to America, in 1630. He was one of the proprietors of Reho- both, Massachusetts, living in Seekonk, a portion of which, including the Reed homestead, was set off to Rhode Island. He died in 1685, and his gravestones may yet be seen in the cemetery at East Providence, Rhode Island. His son William,2 in 1653, married Ruth Crook, and settled in Boston.
ISAAC REED3 resided in Salem, made his will in 1712, and left his property to his son Isaac.4
ISAAC REED JR.4 married Rebecca Burton in 1736, and lived in Salem.
DANIEL REED,5 son of Isaac Jr.,4 married Lydia Cook, and settled in Danvers, Massachu- setts. He had six daughters and four sons.
WILLIAM REED,6 born November 3, 1775, came to Norway in 1798. He married Eliza- beth, daughter of Jedediah Cobb, of Gray. He died November 5, 1848. Children : -

ROBINSON.
INCREASE ROBINSON, for many years a prominent merchant here, came here from Frye- burg, where he was born in 1781. He went into trade with his uncle, William Cox, and they traded under the firm name of Cox & Robinson. Subsequently they dissolved, and each went into business for himself. He was married in November, 1807, to Elizabeth, daughter of Rolan Crocker, of Conway, New Hampshire, born in 1783. In 1831, the family moved to Skowhegan. Children : -

ROWE.
BENJAMIN ROWE was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, February 8, 1767. He was a descendant in the fourth generation from John Rowe, who purchased land in that part of Gloucester known as the " Farms" as early as 1651, and whose wife's name was Bridget. Benjamin Rowe was among the early settlers of Norway, having come here from New Gloucester prior to 1794. He served in the war of 1812, and was a prisoner on board a prison ship. He died January 13, 1859, and was buried in this town. He married first, February 2, 1790, Judith Rowe, of New Gloucester, and had : -

His wife died December 17, 1790, and for second wife he married, February 20, 1792, Elizabeth Jordan, and had : -

SIMEON ROWE, eldest son of the preceding, married, December 28, 1818, Rebecca Merrill, born in Andover, Massachusetts, April 19, 1793. He lived in that part of Hebron that is now Oxford, and moved to Woodstock in 1833, and settled on half of wild lot number sixty- seven, in the west part. There he lived twenty-four years, and then moved, with his son, to the Bartholomew Cushman farm, where he died, March 2, 1864. His wife died July 9, 1860. Children : -

MERRILL JORDAN ROWE, son of the preceding, married, December 22, 1844, Betsey Gur- ney, oldest daughter of Joel and Sophronia (Bisbee) Perham, of Woodstock, who was born March 13, 1821, in that town. He is an intelligent and successful farmer. He moved from Woodstock to Norway, November 9, 1872, to the Amos F. Noyes farm, where he still lives. Children : -
I. Edwin Merrill, b. September 2, 1848; d. of diphtheria, March 7, 1861.
II. Ellen Elizabeth, b. November 26, 1849; d. of same, March 10, 1861.
III. Edwin M., b. May 2, 1358. He married, 1879, Annie Cordelia Burnham, of Norway, and resides in Norway. Three children.
SOLOMON ROWE, son of Benjamin and brother of Simeon, resided in Danville, and also in Norway. He married Hannah Millett, who was born in Norway, April 10, 1797. He died in Norway, November 1, 1872, and his widow died February 22, 1884. Children, all born in Danville : -

RUSSELL.
GEORGE W. RUSSELL, shovel-handle manufacturer, came to Norway from Oxford in 1870. He was born in Avon, Maine, March 23, 1831. His father was from England, and his mother from Vermont. He married, May 13, 1855, Phebe E. Greene, who was born at Westbrook, July 4, 1829. Children : -
I. Ada A., b. December 5, 1856; m., November 8, 1879, Frank Libby.
II. Charles E., b. August 31, 1858; m., December 13, 1879, Carrie E. Crooker.
III. Herbert L., b. February 13, 1865.
RUST.
The emigrant ancestor of the Rust families of Norway, Nathaniel Rust, sometimes called " Glover," referring to his occupation, settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he was made a freeman in 1674. He was a prominent man, and had much to do in the management of the affairs of the old town, as the records clearly indicate. probate records of Essex County also show that he was a public administrator, and settled the estates of a large number of persons who had deceased. His wife's name was Mary (family name not known), but she was said to have been the daughter of Quartermaster Perkins, who accompanied the expedition to Quebec in 1690. She died January 16, 1720, aged seventy-eight years. It is said that Nathaniel Rust came from the Island of Guernsey in the English Channel. Chil- dren : -

wich, December 28, 1704, it was "voted to give Nathaniel Rust Jr., in behalf of his father [father-in-law], Quartermaster Kinsman, two acres of land by his house on Chebacco, up ye hill, which land is accepted in full satisfaction for ye loss and damage ye sd Kinsman sus- tained under Sir Edmund Andros' Government." He died September 9, 1711. He left eight children : -

JOHN RUST, the youngest son of the first Nathaniel, and brother of the preceding, was married, September 26, 1705, to Sarah, daughter of John and Sarah Potter. He died intes- tate, and January 22, 1716-17, his widow was appointed administrator of his estate. They had four children : -

JOHN RUST JR., oldest son of the preceding, married, November 12, 1730, Sarah, daughter of Abraham and Abigail Foster, of Ipswich. He died November 12, 1752, intestate, and on the following day his widow was appointed administrator. Children : -
I. John, b. May 22, 1732; d. at Gloucester ; unmarried.
II. Sarah, b. September 25, 1735; m. William Parsons, of Gloucester, afterward of New Gloucester. They were the parents of Deacon William and John Parsons, our early settlers.
III. Henry, b. August 23, 1737; m. Lydia Jones.
IV. Abigail, b. November 6, 1742; m. Benjamin Witt, of Lynn. They were the parents of Benjamin Witt, the first smithy in Rustfield.
V. Daniel, b. June 24, 1747. He was killed by a horse.
HENRY RUST, son of the preceding, was the proprietor of Rustfield. He married, Decem- ber 25, 1759, Lydia, daughter of Joseph and Lydia Jones, of Salem, who was born May 12, 1740. He moved to Salem in early manhood, and was prominent there many years. For second wife, he married, May 28, 1807, Abigail Benson. For a further account of this man see Personal Notice. He died September 28, 1812. Children : -

HENRY RUST JR., son of the preceding, married, June 18, 1785, Sally, daughter of Natha- niel and Hannah Archer, of Salem, who was born January 15, 1764, and died August 4, 1846. He was the first of the name to settle permanently in Norway, and died here August 25, 1820. He was known as Captain Rust, having, previous to coming here, been master of a ship, sometimes acting as captain, and also as supercargo. His health became impaired by reason of the exposure and hardships incident to sea-faring life, and he abandoned it and came to Rustfield, where he engaged in farming. Children : -

II. Sally, b. February 26, 1789; m. Henry Farwell.
III. Lydia Jane, b. January 17, 1793; m. Bezaleel Cushman.
IV. Harriet, b. November 16, 1799; m. Henry W. Millett.
V. Evelina Augusta, b. September 4, 1802; m. Jesse W. Mighils.
JOHN RUST, brother of the preceding, married Nancy Mansfield, of Salem. He came to Norway and engaged in business, becoming owner of the mills erected by his father, which he enlarged and improved. He died May 26, 1834. Children : -
I. Ann Maria, b. ; d. unmarried in Solon.
II. Eliza Mansfield, b. ; m. a Proctor, and now (1886) resides with her daughter, Mrs. Osgood, in Salem, Massachusetts.
III. Jack, b. . He was never married, and died aged thirty years.
JOSEPH RUST, brother of the preceding, was by trade a silver-smith. He married, Septem- ber 22, 1786, Ruth Lash, of Boston. He came to Norway previous to the formation of Oxford County, and was elected Register of Deeds. He moved to Paris Hill, and resided there ten years. during two terms of office. While there he was elected town clerk. He returned to Norway, and died here May 2, 1815. Children: -
I. Ruth, b. . She died unmarried in Norway, November 25, 1865.
II. Lydia, b. ; m. Jonathan B. Smith, of Norway.
III. Joseph, b. ; d. unmarried, a young man.
HENRY RUST JR., oldest son of Captain Henry and Sally (Archer) Rust, married Mary, daughter of William and Kate (Nixon) Stowell, of Paris. She was born January 26, 1791. He died in Norway, June 9, 1863. Children : -
I. Mary, b. March 13, 1831 ; m. Henry N. Merrill, who is an attorney-at-law at Haverhill, Massachusetts.
II. Henry, b. March 13, 1831. He was familiarly known as "Harry Rust." He married, October 3, 1871, Kate Hobbs, of Worcester, Massachusetts. He died in Portland, July 21, 1881. (See Personal Notice.) He left one child, Kate Louise, born in Hav- erhill, February 5, 1873.

RYERSON.
CHARLES WASHINGTON RYERSON, born in Paris, April 7, 1830, came to Norway in 1865. He is the son of Cushman Ryerson, born in Paris, October 20, 1801, and Lovina Dunn, born in Poland in ISOS, and died December 16, 1836. He married, May 1, 1859, Susan R. Marston, who was born June 7, 1835. Mr. Ryerson is a farmer. Children : -
I. Lizzie Julia, b. May 22, 1862; d. February 27, 1865.
