He married Harriet Vining, and had one son, Fred, who became an eclectic physician, married a daughter of Dr. George, and is now practicing in Massachusetts.


II. Nathaniel B., b. October 31, 1822; m. Lydia, daughter of Joseph Wardwell, Esq., of Rumford, and resides in Boston.


III. Mary, b. May 17, 1824; m. Sylvanus Akers.


MAHALON CROCKETT, son of Joshua Jr., married Martha J. Chesley, of Lincoln, Maine. He died in Lincoln, June 6, 1860. Children given in the census of 1850 : -

DANIEL CUMMINGS was one of the first settlers of Gray. He was born December 4, 1724, and was the son of Joseph Cummings by Abigail Esty, his wife, both of Topsfield, Massachu- setts. He married Mary, daughter of George Williams, whose wife was Sarah Gilbert, of Cape Ann. Children : -

He married Elizabeth Bryant, whose father, Solomon Bryant, formerly of Plympton, Massachusetts, was then of Gray, and afterward of Paris. Isaac Cummings died in Bethel, October 1, 1842. JONATHAN CUMMINGS, the proprietor of Cummings Purchase and Gore was of Andover, Massachusetts, and a blacksmith. His wife was Mary Eastman, a sister of Job Eastman Jr., so long the clerk of Norway. His wife died July 26, 1801, and he then married, December 30, 1802, Mary Parker, He died in 1805, aged 67. Children : -

IV. Jonathan, b. February 5, 1771 ; m. Joanna Cobb, of Gray, and settled in Norway.

MAJOR JONATHAN CUMMINGS, son of the Proprietor, came quite early to his father's pur- chase, and was an active and enterprising citizen. He cleared land, built mills and made other improvements. He married Joanna, daughter of Colonel Jedediah Cobb, of Gray, and had : -


I. Mary Holt, b. March 20, 1804; m., September 2, 1822, Josiah Little, of Newbury- port. She died in Minot, Maine, October 6, 1829, aged 25 years, 6 months.

II. Eliza, b. October 6, 1806; d. October 22, 1808.


III. Daniel, b. August 18, 1810. He moved to Tuscumbia, Missouri, married there, and reared a family, and died July 14, 1885. He was much respected in the commu- nity where he lived, was buried with Masonic honors, in the presence of a large crowd of people, who came to pay their last respects to " everybody's friend."


IV. Clarissa Ann, b. August 20, 1815; d. in Gray, December 4, 1832.


V. Lewis Ladd, b. January 30, 1818; d. in Winthrop, Maine, March 25, 1847. He was a civil engineer and was engaged in surveying the Androscoggin Railroad at the time of his death.


Major Jonathan Cummings died July 12, 1820, and his widow married, in 1823, Captain Charles Barbour, of Gray, by whom she had : -

WILLIAM MYRICK CUSHMAN, son of the preceding, married, March 4, 1848, Mary Eliza- beth, daughter of Eben and Jane (March) Hobbs, of Norway. He was a jeweler and watch repairer in the village for several years. He moved from here to Portland, and went into business with his wife's brother, Joseph Hobbs. He was not successful in business, and when the war broke out, he went into the army, and died soon after his return home. His wife resides in Portland with several children. (Since deceased.)


CALEB CUSHMAN JR., son of Caleb and Charlotte (Packard) Cushman, of Hebron, married Betsey E. Bumpus, of Hebron, and moved to Norway. Children : -

ANSEL H. CUSHMAN, son of the preceding, married, May 13, 1860, Esther M. Holden, who was born June 20, 1841. He is a farmer and resides in Norway. Children : -

DANFORTH.


JOSIAH DANFORTH was the son of Lieutenant Joseph Danforth, of Dunstable, Massachu- setts, who was born in 1720, and died in 1795, grandson of Hon. Samuel Danforth, great- grandson of Jonathan and Rebecca (Parker) Danforth, and great-great-grandson of Jonathan Danforth, of Billerica, the noted land surveyor. Lieutenant Joseph Danforth married Mary Richardson, and had eight children. His son, Josiah, was born in 1757, and married Sarah Blodgett, of an old Dunstable family, who was born in 1755. They lived in Tyngsborough. Children : -

DR. ASA DANFORTH, for so many years the highly esteemed physician of Norway (see his personal sketch in Norway Physicians), married Abigail C., daughter of William Reed, of Norway. Children : -

DAVIS.


ALVAH B. DAVIS, son of Deacon John Davis, was born in Middleton, New Hampshire, February 20, 1803 and died in Norway, November 21, 1871. He married, November 14, 1825, Sarah B., daughter of Levi Young, of New Durham, New Hampshire; b. July 1, 1807 ; d. Norway, July 25, 1874. He came to Norway in 1845. Children : -


I. John, b. Middleton, October 8, 1827; d. March 5, 1828.


II. Sophia H., b. July 23, 1829; r. Norway.


III. Levi Y., b. October 27, 1832; d. Norway, April 2, 1872.


DEERING.


JOHN DEERING JR., was the oldest son of John and Mary (Jameson) Deering, and was born in Saco, in 1784. His father, John Deering Sen., died in Paris, July 22, 1845. John Deer- ing Jr., came to Paris when quite young and married Ann Newhall, of Sterling, Massachusetts. He was a carpenter and builder, and was much employed in the construction of buildings in the north part of Paris and Woodstock and was a conscientious and faithful mechanic. He was frequently in town office and performed his duties promptly and faithfully. In 1836, he moved to Norway, and Deering street, in the village, commemorates his name. About the year 1858, he moved to Portland and died there September 27, 1869, aged 85 years. His wife died May 31, 1870, aged 77. Children, all born in Paris : -


I. William H., b. Paris, October 25, 1811. He married Abigail Tolbert of Turner, was a lawyer, and died in Louisiana, in September, 1840.


II. Hiram W., b. April 5, 1813 ; m. Elizabeth C., daughter of William Reed, of Nor- way; is a trader in Portland.


III. Alvin, b. June 13, 1815; resides Portland, trader; m. Margaret D. Nason, of Hollis.
