DIRECT TAX OF 1798.

" General list of lands, lots, buildings, etc., owned, possessed, and occupied on the first day of October, 1798, within the town of Norway, excepting only such dwelling houses with the outhouses appurtenant thereto, and the lots on which they stand, not exceeding two acres in any case, are above the value of one hundred dollars." These are printed here as showing the taxable inhabitants of Norway at the time, and also as indicating the approximate finan- cial standing of each; approximate only because only real estate was taxable under the Act. John Greenwood was assessor; and Samuel Parris, Daniel Stowell, Job Eastman, and David Coy were assistants.
