HISTORY OF NORWAY.
FIRST COUNTY ROAD.
Benjamin Witt and a number of others, inhabitants of Rustfield, Cummings' Grant, and Lee's Grant, by their petition and application to this Court, having represented that a new highway or common road is wanted through Cummings' Grant, Rustfield, and Dr. Craigie's Plantation, and so on through part of Poland to the County road that leads to Portland.
And it being determined by said Court to be of- common convenience and necessity to have such way laid out. The Court appointed John Greenwood, Esq., John Turner, Esq., Nathaniel Coit Allen, Peleg Chandler, and Job Cushman, five disinterested freeholders in said County, to lay out the same, and ascertain the place and course thereof in the best manner they could, first giving a seasonable notice to all parties interested, of the time and place of their meeting and to be under oath to perform said service according to the best of their skill and judgment, and with most convenience to the public, and least prejudice or damage to private property, and make return thereof under their bonds and seal, to the next Court of General Sessions of the Peace, to be held in said County, next after said ser- vice should be performed, to the end the same may be accepted, allowed, recorded, and after- wards known as a public highway; and if any person be damaged in his property by laying out the said road, to estimate and make return thereof as aforesaid, - and now the said committee having given the notice and taken the oath by law required, make return as follows : -
