OTIS W. BROOKS, son of William C. and Hannah (Poland) Brooks, born in Yarmouth, August 11, IS21, married, January 13, 1848, Elvira Cummings, who was born April 20, 1820. He came here from Paris in 1868, and is engaged in farming. Children : -

WILLIAM MARK BROOKS, son of William and Dorcas R. (Rawson) Brooks, and grandson of William C., born October 11, 1827, lived in Paris, from thence moved to Woodstock, thence to Otisfield, and then came to Norway. He is by profession a school teacher, and has been very successful in teaching town and private schools. (See Lapham's Woodstock.)


DAVID P. BROOKS, son of David and Charlotte (Parsons) Brooks, and cousin of the pre- ceding, born in Paris, April 25, 1837, married, May 7, 1866, Julia A. Bennett. He is a farmer, and came here from Upton, Maine, in 1775. Children : -

BROWN.


TITUS OLCOTT BROWN, who with his son-in-law, Amos Purinton, once kept a tavern in Norway Village, and died here, February 23, 1855, aged over ninety years, was a descendant of Thomas Brown, of Lynn, 1628, who, by wife Mary, daughter of Thomas Newhall, had a large family. Three of his sons moved to Stonington, Connecticut.


JOHN2 BROWN, son of Thomas, married, October, 1692, Elizabeth, daughter of Ephraim Miner, and died in 1729, leaving ten children.


ICHARODª BROWN, son of the preceding, born November 12, 1704, married, May 30, 1731, Sarah, daughter of John and Sarah Brown Chapman, who was born November 25, 1710. They had nine children.


ELIAS* BROWN, son of the preceding, born February 1, 1733-4, moved to Tolland, Con- necticut, and afterward to Alstead, New Hampshire. He married, June 16, 1757, Abigail Olcott, of Bolton. They had four children.

TITUS OLCOTT5 BROWN, son of the preceding, (see Personal Notice), was born in Tolland, Connecticut, August 25, 1764. He married Susannah, daughter of Isaac and Susannah (Johnson) Bundy, of Walpole, New Hampshire, who was born December 19, 1771, a descend- ant of John Bundy, who came to Plymouth in 1630, in the family of Elder Brewster. VI. John Bundy, b. May 31, 1805; m., September 30, 1830, Ann Matilda, daughter of Philip and Dorcas (Blanchard) Greely. He was the well known and success- ful merchant and banker of Portland. He died January 10, 1881, leaving two sons, Philip H. and John Marshall Brown, who continue the banking business of J. B. Brown & Sons, and daughter Ellen, wife of William H. Clifford, Esq.


VII. Susan Johnson, b. May 1, 1807; m., Ist, February 17, 1835, Henry Houghton, of Windham, and 2d, February 5, 1860, Oliver P. Brooks, of Dalton, N. H.


VIII. Mary Ann, b. Bartlett, New Hampshire, July 4, 1809; m., October 19, 1836, Gilman Chapman, of Bethel; she died February 28, 1866.


IX. Eliza Fox, b. December 31, 1812; m. Sylvanus Poor, of Andover, Maine; she died January 27, 1867.


X. Sarah Adeline, b. February 17, 1815; m., May 30, 1867, Gilman Chapman, of Bethel. The only survivors at the present time (1885) are Mrs. Purinton, who is a widow at South Easton, Massachusetts, and Mrs. Brooks. (Mrs. Purinton has since died.)

EPHRAIM BROWN, born in Concord, Massachusetts, April 9, 1789, married Lucy Heald, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, and in 1822 came from Carlisle to Norway. His father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He settled first on the Samuel Foster farm, but in 1833 he bought the grist-mill at Steep Falls. He also manufactured shoe pegs. The mill and the shop were carried off by a freshet in 1843. He died in 1844, and his widow in 1855, aged sixty-seven. Children, only one of whom, Ephraim H., remained in town : -

PETER BUCK JR. came from Worcester, Massachusetts, to Paris, and from there came to Norway in 1799. His father was a French Protestant or Huguenot, and he married Jemima Fay, of Framingham, Massachusetts, who died in Norway, September 10, 1839, aged eighty. He died November 6, 1842, aged ninety-four. The children are not arranged with regard to age. The French name of this family was Banyott. Children : -

CHASE.


STEPHEN CHASE, son of Edmund, of Minot, married Ruth Tyler, of New Gloucester. He lived in Lewiston, in the employ of Michael Little, and was said to be the first millman there. He also had charge of the ferry across the river at that place. He was one of the first set- tlers in Woodstock ; was the first town clerk, the first Justice of the Peace in town, and the first Representative to the Legislature. He was also agent of the proprietors of the town. He was one of the early deacons of the Baptist Church at Paris Hill, and a licensed preacher. About the year 1825. he moved to Lincoln, Maine, and died there. Children :-

Abner B. resided there and at Winn until 1877, when he moved to Norway. He is a carpenter, and his wife has been engaged in the millinery business since they came to town. Mr. Chase married, September 10, 1845, Hannah Prince Morton, who was born in Buckfield, August 17, 1825. Children : -

Frank E. Butterfield, the second wife of Mr. Chase, was the daughter of John Butterfield by his second wife, Catherine, who was the daughter of Jerathmel Colburn, of Paris, and the widow of Abner Benson. John Butterfield was the son of Joseph and Molly (Harding) Butterfield, of Standish, and for his first wife married Betsey Lord, of Standish. Joseph Butterfield came from Dunstable, Massachusetts, or from that vicinity, to Standish, and is said to have been of Scotch descent.


CHURCHILL.


JOSEPH CHURCHILL, of Middleborough, Massachusetts, married Alice Drake, of the same town. He settled in Hebron first, but remained there only a short time, and then removed to Paris, near the Norway line. Children : -

WILLIAM CHURCHILL, brother of the preceding, married Mary Penley, of Norway, and settled on a farm in this town, and died here September 26, 1873. Children : -

CLEAVES.


EBENEZER CLEAVES lived in Danville, Maine. At least three of his children came to this town, and two others were in Paris. He probably had other children, but those who came to this town and vicinity were: -

ENOCH N. CLEMENT was born at Landaff, New Hampshire, January 18, 1832. During the late war, he served as chief musician in the Fifth New Hampshire. He married Mary M. Richardson, of Compton, P. Q., and settled in Bath, New Hampshire. In 1874, he came to Norway, where his wife died September 10, 1884. Children :-


I. Richard E., b. January 2, 1860; he is principal of a High School at Roselle, N. J.


II. Grace M., b. October 4, 1862 ; m., December 25, 1884, Samuel H. Hayden, of Norway.


COBB.


EBENEZER COBB JR., born in Middleborough, Massachusetts, March 17, 1759, married Eliza- beth, daughter of Samuel Cobb, of Plympton, now Carver, Massachusetts, November 6, 1783. He came to Norway in 1797. He died May 9, 1826, and his wife died June 22, 1843, aged eighty-three. Children, the first seven born in Middleborough, the others in Norway : -


I. Elizabeth, b. Middleborough, Massachusetts, February 19, 1784; m. Samuel Putnam 9 of Rumford, September 16, 1806; d. November 1, 1872.


II. Susannah, b. December 12, 1785; d. November 1, 1787.


III. Susannah, b. March 22, 1788; m. Daniel Smith, of Norway, July 12, 1828; s. Oxford.


IV. Ebenezer, b. April 13, 1790; d. November 25, 1820.


V. Lucy, b. February 28, 1792 ; m. Stephen Putnam, of Rumford, November 20, 1817; she died March 3, 1828.


VI. Cyrus, b. June 20, 1793; m. Susan Norton, of Norway, September 17, 1818.


VII. . Churchill, b. December 28, 1795; m. Pamela Putnam, of Rumford, October 16, 1817.


VIII. Sylvanus, b. Norway, July 17, 1798; m., September 10, 1822, Eunice Hale Wait, of Hallowell.

CYRUS COBB, son of the preceding, married Susan Norton. She died December 4, 1864. He was instantly killed by a fall in his barn, November 18, 1847. Children : -

CHURCHILL COBB, brother of the preceding, married Pamela Putnam. He was fatally injured by a fall from the mow upon the barn floor, March 6, 1857. He left a small family.

FREDERICK COBURN came here with Ward Noyes, an apprentice to the carpenter's trade. He married Mary Sanborn, and moved to Greenwood, where he lived many years, and then went West and died there. Children :-

ALBERT COFFIN, farmer, son of Nicholas and Esther (Coffin) Coffin, the former born in Lovell in 1819, the latter in Bethel, was born in Lovell, July 28, 1838, and came to Norway

in 1872. He married, June 4, 1865, Elizabeth Jane Richardson, who was born in Norway, May 23, 1841. Children : -

COLE.


HORATIO GATES COLE came here from Winthrop, and carried on the carding and cloth- dressing business. He was an industrious and energetic man, and a useful citizen. He was born June 9, 1802, and married Pamelia, daughter of Elias Stowell, of Paris. He was the son of John Cole, born June 22, 1765, in Berwick, Maine, and Ann Morrill, born December 16, 1765. Children : -


I. Mary Ann, b. March 9, 1829; m. Joseph A. Kendall, of Alfred.


II. Sarah Hall, b. April 9, 1831 ; m. William Wirt Virgin.
