BENJAMIN HERRING,1 a sea captain, with two brothers, is said to have come from England in 1720, and settled in Cape Ann, Massachusetts. His wife died in New Gloucester, aged

nearly one hundred years. He had two sons, Benjamin and Robert; the latter died in infancy.
BENJAMIN HERRING,2 born in Cape Ann about 1725, married Experience Annis, who died in Norway in 1817, aged eighty-eight. During the war of the Revolution, he went into the service in a privateer and was never afterward heard of.

He is a physician of the magnetic school, and is said to have a large and lucrative practice. He is connected by ties of blood with a large number of Norway families.
HIGGINS.
THOMAS HIGGINS was born in Westbrook, Maine, in 1814, and came here from Turner in 1842. He was the son of Elisha Higgins, who was born in Massachusetts in 1780. He mar- ried Lucy Abbie, daughter of Oren Bearce, of Hebron, who was born in Turner in 1798, and whose wife was Susan Harlow.

THOMAS HILL was an English soldier under Burgoyne, and was taken prisoner at the capture of Ticonderoga. He was a waiter, as he claimed, of General Frazier. He said that he thought there were not men enough in all North America to capture Burgoyne's army. He was a weaver by trade. He married Keziah Jackson, of Newton. He came first to Hebron, and then to Norway, and died here. Children : -

He was born in Gloucester, May 10, 1832, and October 10, 1853, married Olive S. Ford, who was born May 10, 1834. Children : -

JEREMIAH HOBBS, born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, June 14, 1747, came into Norway with his wife and eight children, with the first settlers. He had previously felled trees east of the place where the Congregational meeting-house was afterward built, which he supposed to be in Rustfield, but which proved to be in the Cummings purchase. His wife, Anna Fowler, was born in Kittery, October 20, 1746, and died June 18, 1824. Children : -

JOSIAH S. HOBBS was in the family of Granville L. Reed in Norway, when the census of 1850 was taken. He is the son of the late James Hobbs Jr., and was born in Chatham, New Hampshire, June 27, 1828. His father moved to Fryeburg, and after a several years' resi- dence there, he moved to Lovell, and died there. Josiah S. Hobbs received an academical education, taught school for several years, studied law, and went into practice in Waterford. He represented that town in the Legislature, was elected from there, Register of Probate, and filled the office twelve years. He was appointed in 1871, State Librarian, and with the exception of one year, has held the office since, and resides in Augusta. He married Emeline, daughter of Stevens and Sophia (Chadbourne) Smith; they have no children.
HOLDEN.
JOHN HOLDEN, born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, December 28, 1761, married Sybil T. Moors, of Groton, and resided in Groton. He had eight children, the first five born in Groton, between 1785 and 1796, and the last three born in Otisfield, between 1800 and 1807.
HENRY HOLDEN, son of the preceding, born in Groton, Massachusetts, January 21, 1787, married Abigail Mann, daughter of Dr. David and Elizabeth (Whiting) Ray, who was born in Otisfield, November 10, 1790.
COLUMBUS HOLDEN, eldest son of the preceding, was born in Otisfield, May 31, 1807, and died at Bolster's Mills, January 29, 1860. He married Lavinia, daughter of Frye Lovejoy, of Norway, and in connection with his brother, David R. and George Pierce, of Harrison, built mills at Baker's Falls on Crooked River, in 1831. He was a mill-wright by trade, and built mills in various places in Maine, also in Monroe County, Wisconsin. Children : -
I. Almon, b. June 10, 1837; m. Rosamond Knight, of Otisfield, and died March 26, 1861.
II. Lucinda Jane, b. September 9, 1840; m. Henry Weston, of Otisfield, and died May 20, 1866.
DAVID RAY HOLDEN, brother of the preceding, was born October 22, 1809, married Louisa, daughter of Frye Lovejoy. With his brother and another, he built mills on Crooked River in Norway in 1831, and became a resident of the town soon after. His chief business has been lumbering and trade; has traded in four different stores in Norway. Children : -
