JAMES SMITH and wife Eleanor are said to have come from England on account of opposi- tion to their marriage. Mrs. Smith's family being opposed to the marriage, and having friends in this country, they sent her here to be rid of him, but he concealed himself on board the same ship, and when one day out, made his appearance. They were married on their arrival in this country. She died January 12, 1886, aged ninety-two years. Her husband was three years her junior. Children : -

He graduated at Bowdoin College, class of 1865, taught school a few years, and since then has devoted himself mainly to juvenile literature, in which he has achieved a marked success; is assistant editor of the Youth's Companion. JONAS W. SWAN, clothing manufacturer, is the son of Fessenden and Helen M. (Crockett) Swan, of Woodstock, and was born there March 13, 1844. He has lived in Woodstock, Paris, and Greenwood, and came from the latter town to Norway in April, 1871. He married April 7, 1565, Rowena, daughter of John Farewell, of Bethel, born August 12, 1542. JOSEPH SWIFT, from Cape Cod, was an early settler in Paris. He married Lucy Holmes in 1788. His children, save the two oldest, were born in Paris. Children : -

NEWTON SWIFT, son of the preceding, succeeded his father in trade at North Norway, and after a few years, moved to Bethel, and was in trade there. He married Betsey Kimball, daughter of Peter Town Jr., who survives him, and resides in Boston. He died February 17, 1865. Children : -

THAYER.


ASA THAYER, son of Asa and Lydia (Chapin) Thayer, born in Paris, April 2, 1806, married in 1831, Lucy M. Whitney, of Worcester. He moved from Paris to Norway, and was in trade here. He was the third postmaster at the village. His first wife died January 15, 1850, and he then married Mary D. Frost, of Bethel, daughter of Rev. Charles Frost. He went to Kansas, and died in Gardner, in that State, August 23, 1854. Children: -

AARON THURLOW, son of Amos and Sarah (Keene) Thurlow, and grandson of Asa Thur- low, who was an early settler of Woodstock, came to Norway from Woodstock in 1873, and is a foreman in the shoe factory. He was born in Woodstock, July 28, 1825, and was married December 4, 1851, to Paulina D. Rice, who was born in Hartford, August 26, 1821. Chil- dren : -

CHARLES C. TIBBETTS, boarding-house keeper, born in Lovell, March 10, 1851, son of Joseph H. Tibbetts, born in Dover, New Hampshire, and his wife, Annette F. Chesley, of Durham, New Hampshire, came to Norway from Fryeburg in 1882. He married, December 31, 1878, Nellie M. Guptill, who was born in Chatham, New Hampshire, March 5, 1852. Children : -

ISAAC TITCOMB, born in North Yarmouth, November 9. 1774, married Azuba Drinkwater, of the same town, July 25, 1796. She was born April 24, 1779. They came to Paris Hill, and moved into the Willis house, and from there to the Follett farm. He was in the com- pany of Captain Uriah Ripley, at Portland, war of 1812. Children : -


I. Alexander, b. April 16, 1798; went to Calais, Maine, and was drowned.


II. Dorcas, b. May 7, 1800; m. Isaac Hall; s. in Harrison.

He came to Norway in 1803, was prominent in military and town matters. He was Captain of the North Norway company that served in Portland, war of 1812, and became Colonel. Children : -

CLARK P. TRUE was born in Sutton, Vermont, July 4, 1823. He came to Norway with the Denisons, and has been in trade here many years. He married, January 4, 1852, Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Asa Danforth. Children : -


I. Nellie Adella, b. March 23, 1853; m., January 6, 1874, Dr. William H. Jewett, of Norway, who died March 9, 1880.

TRULL.


GRIFFIN TRULL, of Greenwood, married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Furlong, formerly of Norway, but one of the first two settlers in Greenwood. Mr. Trull was a farmer, and died in this town. Children : -

ALANSON MELLEN TRULL, son of the preceding, was married at Bryant's Pond, February 9, 1862, by Dr. W. B. Lapham, Esq., to Laura A., daughter of Daniel and Diana (Cole) Cole, of Greenwood, and adopted daughter of Alfred and Elvira (Perham) Chase, of Woodstock. He is a blacksmith and carriage-maker ; carried on the business several years in Woodstock, and then came to Norway, where he yet resides. Children : -

TUBBS.


JACOB TUBBS was the first settler on Lee's grant, and the only one who received his deed from Lee. He married Jemima Churchill, and came to this town about the year 1795, from Hebron. Children : -


I. Jacob Fr., b. ; be died in the army, war of 1812.


II. Charles, b. ; m. Lydia Churchill.


III. Angier, b. ; m. Philena Packard, of Hebron.


IV. Sally, b. ; m. Daniel Knight Jr.


V. Hannah, b. ; m. Josiah Bartlett Jr.


VI. Samuel, b. 1793; he married Mary Pool and moved to Abbot,


Maine, where he and his wife died, and his only child, a daughter, died unmarried.


CHARLES TUBBS, son of the preceding, had one son and four daughters, all of whom died young, except Lydia, who married a Cheever and lives in Massachusetts.


ANGIER TUBBS, brother of the preceding, born in Hebron, January 18, 1785, married Phi- lena Packard, of Hebron. He lived and died in Norway. Children : -


I. James, b. January 5, 1809; m. Hannah J. Wentworth, and had, Charles Newell, born August 27, 1837, now in trade in the village, and James, who died.

CHARLES N. TUBBS, trader, son of James and Hannah J. (Wentworth) Tubbs, born August 27, IS37, married, June 24, 1874, Abbie J. Crockett, born December 20, 1845. Children : -

TUCKER.


BENJAMIN TUCKER, born in Canton, Massachusetts, September 20, 1776, came here from Worcester in 1800, making the journey from Portland on foot. He was the first, and for many years the only saddle and harness-maker in town. In this occupation he was succeeded by his son, Benjamin Jr. His house was built in 1802, on the shoe-factory lot. He married Mary Pike, of Norway, who was born in New Gloucester, June 15, 1787. He died October 27, 1857, and his wife died October 5, 1859. Children : -
