UPTON.


AMOS UPTON, son of Deacon Amos and Sarah Upton, was born in North Reading, Massa- chusetts, October 3, 1742, and married first, Edith Upton, and second, Joanna Bruce. He

was the fourth in descent from John Upton, who was at Salem, Massachusetts, in 1658 (see Upton Memorial). Amos Upton came to Norway in 1789, and felled trees as the commence- ment of a new home. In September, 1790, he moved his family here. During the first years of his settlement here, his brothers, Nathaniel and John, were with him. The former married Sarah Flint, of Reading, and resided in that town until he moved to Stockbridge. John married Anna Hart, of Reading, and lived in various places, but returned to Reading, and died there in 1813. Amos Upton, the progenitor of our Norway families, was a natural mechanic, and though a farmer, he had a shop where he did his own blacksmithing. In 1801, he built a small grist-mill, doing nearly all the work himself. He had been a soldier in the war for independence, beginning at the battle of Bunker Hill. He died April 3, 1838, at the great age of ninety-six years. Children : -

FRANCIS UPTON, oldest son of the preceding, came to Norway with his parents. He married, in 1800, Sarah, daughter of John Bancroft, of Norway, formerly of Lynnfield, Massachusetts. His father gave him the mill before mentioned, and the small farm con- nected therewith. He carried on the mill a few years, and then exchanged the property with his brother Amos for a farm. He afterward moved to Gray, then to Albany, where he died in 1836. Children : -

AMOS UPTON, brother of the preceding, married in 1808, Deborah, the widow of Jacob Frost, whose maiden name was Covel. She was born on Cape Cod. He married second, Sally (Swift) Wing. He worked with his father till he became of age, then bought land in North Norway, which he subsequently exchanged with his brother Francis, as stated else- where. He was much respected in town. He died January 31, 1842. Children : -

MICAH UPTON, brother of the preceding, was only a small child when his parents came to Norway. He became one of the best and most prosperous farmers in town, and with his son, Uriah Upton, became possessed of one of the best farms in the county. He survived all his father's family and lived to be nearly a century old. He married first, Polly Patch, and sec- ond, Mary Cordwell. His children were by the second marriage. Children : -

EBENEZER COVEL UPTON, oldest son of Amos, married Mercy Jane Marble, of Cohasset, Massachusetts. He lived in Norway until 1829, then moved to Danville. He afterward went to sea, and finally settled down at Cohasset, where he died May 12, 1846. Children : -

URIAH HOLT UPTON, oldest son of Micah Upton, married, June 23, 1843, Isannah C. Noble, of Norway. He graduated at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary, and has been a leading and influential citizen of the town. He lived with his father, and jointly they owned one of the best farms in the State. He is an intelligent and progressive farmer, and keeps abreast of the times. Children : -

VIRGIN.


PETER CHANDLER VIRGIN was born in Concord, New Hampshire, July 23, 1783. He was the son of Ebenezer and Dorcas (Lovejoy) Virgin, and grandson of Ebenezer, who came from England in 1722, married Mary Chandler, of Andover, stopped awhile in Salisbury, then in Tyngsborough, and was one of the proprietors of Concord, New Hampshire, and an early settler there. Peter C. Virgin attended school at Phillips Exeter Academy, and read law in the office of Esquire Varnum, of Haverhill. When still a young man, he moved to Rum- ford, Maine, which was settled largely by Concord, New Hampshire, people, and commenced the practice of law. He married Sally, daughter of Francis and Dolly (Bean) Keyes, of


Rumford. Francis Keyes was the son of Jonathan and Sarah (Taylor) Keyes, the first family that settled in Rumford, and his wife Dolly was the daughter of Josiah and Molly (Crocker) Bean, of Standish, and early settlers in Bethel. Mr. Virgin soon had a large practice, which he enjoyed for a period of over fifty years. He was county attorney, postmaster, representative to the Legislature, and held other positions of honor and trust. Children : -

SIMEON WALTON, son of Reuben Walton, an early settler of Paris, married Peggy Hanna- ford, of New Gloucester, and carried on the watch and clock repairing business at the village. For a second wife, he married the widow of Thomas Clark, of Paris. He died March 9, 1862. Children : -

WATSON.


ELIPHALET WATSON, one of the first settlers in Gorham, married Elizabeth, daughter of Captain John Phinney, the first settler there. In 1746, Mr. Watson moved into the Fort and remained there until the close of the Indian wars. Some of his children were born in the garrison. He was a useful man in town, one of the first deacons of the Congregational Church, distinguished for sound sense, practical wisdom, industry, prudence and honesty. He was a pillar of strength in the town. He came to Norway and died here March 14, 1812, aged ninety-four years, eight months. His wife died April 15, 1795, aged seventy-four years. Children : -

WESTON.


ZACHARIAH WESTON5 was living upon Rust's Gore in 1821, and that year when the Gore was annexed to Norway, he became a citizen of this town. He was the son of Joseph4 and Catherine (Mosher) Weston, of Gorham, grandson of Joseph3 and Sarah Weston, of Reading and Cape Elizabeth, great-grandson of Thomas2 and Elizabeth (Brown) Weston, of Reading, and great-great-grandson of John Weston,1 the emigrant, from Buckinghamshire, England, who came first to Salem, and in 1652 moved to Reading, where the following year he married Sarah, daughter of Zachariah Fitch. Zachariah Weston was born in Gorham, June 25, 1762, and married, March 29, 1802, Nancy, daughter of David Frost, then of Gorham, afterward of Norway. Mr. Weston was a private of Captain Alexander McClellans' Gorham Company, of Colonel Jonathan Whitney's regiment, in the Penobscot expedition, in 1779. The suffer- ings of that company in the forests of Eastern Maine are matters of history. Children : -

DAVID WESTON, son of the preceding, married, May 13, 1836, Mary, daughter of John Frost, of Norway. She died April 3, 1842, and he married second, Almira Watson. He now resides (if living) in Atlanta, Georgia. Children : -

WHITCOMB.


DAVID WHITCOMB was born in Bolton, Massachusetts, in 1770, and married Mary Eaton, who was born in 1776. He came from Bolton to Waterford, and then moved to the north part of Norway. He was killed in Hall's saw-mill, April 27, 1835, by logs rolling upon him. Children : -

EPHRAIM WHITCOMB, son of David and Mary (Eaton) Whitcomb, born in Waterford, August 6, 1809, married Eliza Merrill, born in Norway, January 27, 1809. He was a black- smith, and lived in Paris, Norway, Greenwood, and Bethel. He died in Paris, July 27, 1854. Children : -

ABRAHAM WHITCOMB, born in 1765, came from Harvard, Massachusetts, and settled in West Waterford. He married Sally Atherton. Children : -

Bethel Hill, which was afterward burned. He died quite young, and his widow became the wife of William Frost 2d, of Norway; both are deceased. Issue : -

WILLIAM H. WHITCOMB, son of the preceding, after the death of his father, lived in the family of Captain John Harris, his maternal grandfather, at Bethel, for several years, where he had the benefit of the town schools, and a course in Gould's Academy. He subsequently came to Norway, and has been in trade at the village many years. He is one of our most active and reliable business men. He has been on the board of selectmen three years, repre- sentative to the Legislature from Norway, and has held many other positions of trust and honor, which he has acceptably filled. He married, October 27, 1861, Iva Tenney Hatch, born in New Gloucester, Maine, August 18, 1842. Children : -
