BEARCE.
GIDEON BEARCE was born in Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, in 1758. He learned the tanner's trade of Josiah Thomas. He was one of the men who took possession of Dorchester Heights, on the evening of March 4, 1776. He afterward went privateering, and was quite successful. He came to Hebron, then called Shepardsfield, in 1786, and set up a rude tannery in the wilderness, his bark mill being an ox, and his tanpit a wooden trough. He was a much respected citizen. He died June 18, 1844. His wife was Lucy Bucknam, who died December 20, 1851.
DANIEL BEARCE, son of the preceding, born in Hebron, May 11, 1799, married Sylvina Bearce, of Minot, born there in 1792. He lived in Hebron, and died there August 22, 1873. Children : -

BENNETT.
ANTHONY BENNETT, son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Babson) Bennett, born in New Gloucester, December 11, 1770, married Mary Blake, who was born in Gloucester, Massa- chusetts, May 10, 1771. He and his twin brother, Nathaniel, were among our early settlers. Noyes says they felled trees in 1790. Anthony lived on the same premises till the time of his death, and Nathaniel was still living on the old farm in 1852. The wife of Anthony Bennett died July 21, 1849. Children : -

NATHANIEL BENNETT JR., twin brother of the preceding, came to Norway at the same time with his brother. He was born December 11, 1770, and died March 15, 1855. He married Betsey Blake, of New Gloucester, who was a sister to the wife of his brother Anthony. They had no children.
ISAAC BENNETT, son of Anthony, married Sarah or Sally Martin, in 1819. He died Octo- ber 19, 1868. Children : -

WILLIAM S. BENSON, street commissioner and dealer in ice, son of John and Betsey (Staples) Benson, was born in Newfield, February 7, 1822. He married first, Hannah M. Russell, of Bethel, in 1854, and second, Abbie A. Russell, March 8, 1859. He came to Nor- way from Hollis, in 1863. Children :-

BIRD.
JOHN BIRD, son of Samuel and Mary (Carr) Bird, both of England, was born in Detroit, Michigan, October 2, 1774, and went with his parents to Quebec. The parents and four children remained there, viz .: Samuel, Benjamin, Polly, and Nancy. John came to the States, and in company with Jonathan Paine came to Paris. He worked for Daniel Stowell, and while there married Polly Churchill. She was of Hebron, formerly of Bridgewater.

They were the second couple published after the organization of Paris. They moved into the log-house with Eleazer Cole in the Swift neighborhood, and afterward to a lot in Norway. Children : -

BLAKE.
CAPTAIN JONATHAN BLAKE (see Military Record) was born in Bethel, Maine, June II, IS17. His father was Micaiah Blake, who was the son of David Blake, and was born in Wolfboro, New Hampshire, and his mother was Nancy (Ripley) Blake, who was born in Methuen, Massachusetts. The grandmother of Captain Blake was Hannah Messer. Captain Blake was a carriage maker by trade. He carried on the business a short time at Walker's Mills in Bethel, and then moved to Norway. He has engaged in various branches of busi- ness here, served through the war, and has been Deputy Sheriff for twelve years. He married Elizabeth S. Crockett, of Norway, June 17, 1841 ; she was born August 17, 1821. Children : -

BONNEY.
AMERICA BONNEY, son of Thomas and Joan (Gowell) Bonney, of Sumner, born there August 12, 1812, married first, April 8, 1835, Clarissa Noyes, of Abington, Massachusetts, and :second, Abbie R. Thompson, of Hartford, Maine, September 8, 1844, and came to Norway from Sumner, in 1879. His grandfather was Isaac Bonney, born 1758, probably in Pembroke Massachusetts, and his grandmother was a Robinson. His mother, Joan Gowell, was born in Topsham, in 1788, and his father in Massachusetts, in 1786. Isaac Bonney served in the war of the Revolution, and also in the war of 1812. Thomas Bonney also served in the war of 1812. Children : -

BODWELL.
Nathaniel and Molly Bodwell were of Methuen, Massachusetts; he was a descendant of Henry Bodwell, an early settler at Newbury. Children : -

III. Bailey, b. December 9, 1777.
IV. Mary, b. May 17, 1779.
BAILEY BODWELL, son of the preceding, came to Norway prior to 1800, and set up a cloth- dressing establishment at the Village, and was prominent in business affairs for quite a num- ber of years. He was Captain of the Norway militia and commanded the company that went to northern New York in the war of 1812. His wife, Nancy, was born in Westbrook, Maine, in 1779. He moved to Stoneham prior to 1856 and died in Portland of typhoid fever, Sep- tember 25th of that year, and his remains were buried in Stoneham. He had nine children : one died at Glens Falls, New York, one in Portland, one in Buffalo, New York, one in Nor- way, one in Boston, one in Waterford, and one in Aroostook County. His only surviving child is Lavina J., wife of Joseph Ricker, of Stoneham, Maine.

LEVI T. BOOTHBY, a native of Livermore, was living at Norway Village in 1845, and carry- ing on the blacksmith trade. He moved from here to South Paris, and then to Waterville, where he now resides. He married Sophia P., daughter of Martin and Ruth (Durell) Brett, of Paris. Children : -

IRA BERRY, born at New Durham, New Hampshire, September 23, 1801, married Lydia M. Hobart, born in Hingham, Massachusetts, August 5, 1804. He was a job printer, and came to Norway in 1843, and published the Norway Advertiser. He was here only about two years, when he sold the paper, and went away from town. (See Norway Printers.) BERRY, son of Levi and Lusannah (Bryant) Berry, born in Woodstock, Maine, April 5, 1805, married Sally, daughter of Frye Lovejoy, of Andover, Massachusetts, born January 20, 1804; her mother, a Pool, and afterward married a Judkins of Green- wood, came to North Norway about the year 1835, and for many years had charge of Colonel John Millett's mill, near Noble's Corner. He returned to Woodstock and lived there, also in Greenwood and Paris, but returned to Norway, and died at the Village. His widow sur- vives him at Welchville. Children : -
I. Levi Lovejoy, b. October 12, 1827; d. December 25, 1843.
II. Sarah Jane, b. July 13, 1831. She married James M. Abbott, of Oxford, and died at Welchville in April, 1885.

BRADBURY.
The Bradburys of Norway are descended from Captain Thomas Bradbury, who came from England as the agent of Gorges, and finally settled in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Joseph Bradbury, son of Benjamin and Eleanor (Fellows) Bradbury, born in North Yarmouth, May 10, 1768, married Tabitha Cotton, and moved from Poland to Norway, in 1808, and settled upon the farm where his son Jacob afterward lived. He died April 4, 1836, and his wife, born September 5, 1765, died August 25, 1845. Children : -

DR. OSGOOD NATHAN BRADBURY is a physician and surgeon. He was in practice in Springfield, Maine, in Norway, and now resides at South Paris. He was for a while surgeon at Cony Hospital, Augusta, during the late war. He has also served in the House and Senate of Maine. He married, June 13, 1852, Ellen R. Scribner, who was born in Springfield, July 10, 1832. Children : -
I. Bial Francisco, b. Springfield, February, 5, 1861 ; m., March 22, 1882, Mabel F., daughter of Dr. George P. Jones, of Norway. Physician in Norway.
II. Guy, b. Springfield, March 24, 1872 ; d. Norway, May 17, 1876.
JOSEPH AUGUSTUS BRADBURY, son of Moses, is a farmer, carpenter, and grafter. He resides in Norway. He married, August 14, 1862, Sarah Jane Mixer, who was born in Paris, July 21, 1842. Children : -

EPHRAIM BRIGGS JR., born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, November 4, 1768, when a small lad came to New Gloucester, and lived with the Shakers, his father being one of the original members of that family. Arriving at his majority, he left and went to Readfield,

where he married Rachel Allen. He soon after came to live with Captain Henry Rust, of this town, and subsequently purchased a small farm on Pike's Hill. Children : -

Mr. Briggs died November 6, 1855. He occupied the farm he first purchased on Pike's Hill, up to the time of his death. His second wife, now (1885) is eighty years of age, and resides with Mrs. Thomas Everett in Otisfield.

NATHANIEL BRIGGS was born in Halifax, Massachusetts, in 1767, and was married in Paris, November 18, 1802, to Tabitha Briggs, of Hebron. He had seven children as follows : Hannah, Alonzo, Mary Ann, Olive, Thomas, Augustus, and Francis.
THOMAS BRIGGS, son of the preceding, born March 30, 1812, lived in Buckfield, and Jay, and Wilton, and came to the David Morse place in Norway in 1846. In 1858, he sold out to Ezekiel C. Jackson, and moved to Greenwood, from there to Paris, and in 1871, to Harrison, where he now lives. He married, February 22, 1842, Mary P., daughter of William C. Brooks, of Paris, who died September 17, 1867, aged forty-eight. Children : -
I. Mary Ann, b. April 8, 1843; d. August 8, 1858.
II. William H., b. July 27, 1847.
III. Thomas F., b. March 26, 1849.
For second wife, Mr. Briggs married, January 14, 1869, Mary Eliza, daughter of Moses Gage, of Paris.
IV. Lewis F., b. Paris, September 12, 1871.
BROOKS.
WILLIAM C. BROOKS, born in Malone, New York, March 27, 1777, was the son of Jonas and Joanna (Cummings) Brooks. He lived in Portland and Yarmouth, and later in life in

Paris. His wife was Hannah Poland, of Portland, who was born October 20, 1780. They had several sons, William, Thomas G., David, Benjamin, and others, and also daughters.
THOMAS G. BROOKS, son of the preceding, came here from Paris in 1838, and is a farmer. He married, February 21, 1837, Margery F. Bray, of Ossipee, New Hampshire, who was born October 16, 1817. Children : -

II. William, b. December 31, 1839; d. February 24, 1840.
III. George A., b. May 27, 1841; m. Etta J. Houghton.
