Among the early Methodists in town were members of the Upton, Stevens, Pingree, French, Merrill, and other respectable families, and many of their descendants still adhere to this form of religious faith. The present society at the village is composed very largely of more recent residents in town, and includes some of the leading business and professional men in the village. Though introduced into town the latest of the four leading religious denominations here, from small beginnings Methodism has grown to large and respectable proportions in point of numbers and influence. The society here, as elsewhere, is progressive, and is among the foremost in the promotion of temperance, morality, and virtue. Among the ministers who have been assigned to the sta- tions in this town are the following : Jonathan Fairbanks, S. C. Brown, J. Dutton, L. Eldridge, S. P. Farrington, W. H. Foster, J. Gibson, A. Green, A. Hatch, N. Hobart, H. W. Latham, C. H. Lovejoy, Benjamin Lufkin, C. C. Mason, C. Mugford, Dan Perry, J. C. Perry, S. W. Pierce, R. H. Stinchfield, and M. Wight. and of others who have been here in more recent years, would be interesting, but for various reasons they cannot be given. They were here only a short period each, came in many cases from distant parts of the State, and all, or nearly all of the early ones are gathered to their fathers. They were faithful shepherds, and labored earnestly and diligently to establish and sustain in Norway that form of religious faith, which may be said to have been introduced into Maine with this century, and which now has the largest following of any religious denomination in the State.
