GEORGE DENNIS, from Yorkshire, England, came to Norway from Boston, in 1855. He is the son of George and Mary Dennis of Yorkshire, and was born May 25, 18IS. He mar- ried, May 1, 1853, Huldah P. Kilgore who was born January 24, 1820. Children : -

JOHN FRANCIS DEVINE, born in Conway, New Hampshire, September 21, IS45, son of William Devine, born in Tyrone County, Ireland, March 20, 1817, and Eliza Jane Corson, born in the same county, March 17, 1827 (the former being the son of Dennis and Annie (Hacket) Devine, of the same Tyrone), married, September 16, 1871, Sarah M. Judkins, and came to Norway from Brownfield, July 21, 1867. He is by occupation a currier. Children : -

ANSEL DINSMORE, a farmer, came here from Minot in 1839. He was the son of James and Betsey (Verrill) Dinsmore of Minot, and was born in that town, September 26, 1815. He married, October 21, 1837, Judith C. Morse who was born December 24, IS17. Children : -

DOWNER.


HORATIO B. DOWNER was born in New Gloucester, Maine, graduated from the Edward Little Institute, at Auburn, learned at Auburn the trade of painter, in which he afterward was very proficient. He married Augusta C., daughter of Captain James Bowker, of Paris, who died November 11, 1865, and came to Norway in 1856, where he worked at his trade until 1863. He served in Company D, First Maine Heavy Artillery in the late war, and was killed in the engagement in front of Petersburgh, Virginia, June 17, 1864. His father, John Downer, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, married Miriam Raynes, of New Gloucester. The children of Horatio B. and Augusta C. Downer were : -

He married Ist, September 23, 1828, Lura Wing, of Winthrop, born in 1805, and 2d, June 14, 1838, Lucy M. Orcutt, born February 19, 1807. Children : -

DRAKE.


SIMEON DRAKE (see Norway Newspapers) married Martha Elizabeth, daughter of William and Dorothy (Sanborn) Durgin, who was born March 14, 1831. He moved from Bridgton to Norway in 1872, and revived the Norway Advertiser, which had then been suspended for some years. He has been connected with the press of Norway since that time. Children : - I. Charles Mathews b. July 25, 1848; drowned at Laconia, New Hampshire, October 8, 1854.


II. William Abram, b. October 22, 1849; m. Rosalia Maria, daughter of John L. Horne, of Norway. He is a physician at North Weymouth, Massachusetts.


III. Fred Eugene, b. August 15, 1854; m. Clara Augusta, daughter of John J. Hayden, of Norway. He is a dentist in Manchester, Massachusetts.

After- ward the family became residents of Paris and Woodstock. Children : -

Jane Bryant was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Zilpha (Sampson) Bry- ant, of Plympton. Children : -

DUNNELL.


MARK H. DUNNELL, born in Buxton, graduate of Colby University, came here to take charge of the Norway Liberal Institute, in 1850. He was very successful as a teacher. He purchased the Norway Advertiser, and changed the name to Pine State News, which he pub- lished for a short time and abandoned the enterprise. He went West and has been a member of Congress. He married Miss Purington, and his children recorded here are : -

DUTTON.


JOSIAH DUTTON, a carpenter and builder, born in Norridgewock, July 13, 1825, married, September 11, 1856, Sylvia Smith, of Newry. He resided in Bethel and elsewhere and was engaged in building churches, school buildings, and other public edifices, and also private residences. He is a professional architect, and a builder of much experience. He is the son of Josiah Dutton, born in Starks, in 1794, and Nancy Collins, born in Martha's Vineyard, September 24, 1790, and grandson of Josiah Dutton, formerly of Wiscasset. Mr. Dutton came to Norway from Bethel, in 1877, and has since engaged in farming. Children : -

ISAAC DENISON, father of the three Denison brothers who did business in Norway, was born in Stonington, Connecticut, April 23, 1778, and married at Tinmouth, Vermont, October 21, 1798, Electa Newell who was born in Farmington, Connecticut, September 10, 1780. He died in Norway, January 9, 1867, and she in Burke, Vermont, August 22, 1870. Children : -

Denison for about ten years, when he sold out, and built a large pulp mill on Crooked River. He died in Norway, June 26, 1882. Children by first marriage : -

ISAAC A. DENISON, brother of the preceding, was long an enterprising merchant in the village, and was one of the principal losers by the great fire of 1852. He married, at Lyn- don, Vermont, April 23, 1844, Lauristine L. Bemis, who was born at Lyndon, September 17, 1825. Mr. Denison came to Norway, from Lyndon, Vermont, November 1, 1849, and en- gaged in trade with his brother, Adna C. Denison, and Joseph A. Kendall. After two years, he bought out his brother's interest in the store, and continued in business here until 1875, when he sold the store to Amos Oscar Noyes, and moved to Mechanic Falls. Children : -

EASTMAN.


JOB EASTMAN, born in Pembroke, New Hampshire, August 6, 1750, for over forty years the efficient town clerk of Norway and a justice of the peace, was a brother-in-law of Jonathan Cummings of Andover, Massachusetts, the proprietor of Cummings Purchases of this town. He was married, but left no children. He died in 1845.


EVERETT.


PETER EVERETT, of French descent, came into Norway in 1789. His first clearing proved to be on the Cummings purchase and he subsequently moved his buildings across into Rust- field. His wife, widow Susan Burns, according to Mr. Noyes, taught the first school in town. She kept it in her own house. Children : -

He was a contractor and builder, and among the buildings which he erected were the academy building in Norway, and the passenger stations at South Paris and Island Pond. He died October 23, 1871, and his widow died August 11, 1878. Children : -

REUBEN FAVOR, born in Ware, New Hampshire, married Mary, daughter of Deacon Samuel York, of Falmouth, who was born June 5, 1783. He settled in Paris, in the west part of the town, near Norway. He died March 9, 1851. Children : --

JAMES MADISON FAVOR, oldest son of Samuel, married, December 4, 1860, Angelia Tucker, of Norway, who was born December 17, 1838. He moved to Cambridgeport in May, 1869, and returned to Norway in December, 1877. He died June 11, 1881. Children : -

BENJAMIN FLINT, son of Ebenezer and Abigail (Sawyer) Flint, resided in Reading, Massachusetts. "He was noted for his great firmness of purpose, and determination of will, and was much respected for his blameless life and personal worth."* He married Olive, daughter of Rev. Isaac Richardson, of Woburn. Children : -

VIII. Isaac, b. 1784; m .. 1807, Lydia Frost, and settled in Greenwood. He was promi- nent in town affairs, and long a Justice of the Peace. "Squire Flint " was highly respected by his fellow-townsmen.

NATHAN FOSTER, the ancestor of the Fosters in this town, came from Tewksbury, Massa- chusetts, where he was born May 14, 1762. He married Miriam, second daughter of Jere- miah Hobbs. He died February 5, 1836. Children : -
