GEORGE E. GIBSON, son of the preceding, born in Brownfield, July 28, 1828, came to Bryants Pond with his father and was in trade there. He married there October 12, 1853, Mary E. Randall, who was born in Freeport, Maine, April 2, 1835. The mother of Miss Randall was the wife of Joseph Frye, formerly of Durham, but then living at Bryants Pond. Mr. Gibson moved to Norway with his father, and for many years has occupied the Captain David Noyes farm. Children : -

GOODWIN.
THOMAS GUENNIS GOODWIN was born in Londonderry, Ireland, July 9, 1810, and is the son of Thomas Goodwin, born in Peterborough, England, and of his wife, Margaret Guennis, born.at Londonderry, Ireland. He came from Liverpool to Boston in IS47, and thence to Norway in 1850. He is by occupation a cabinet-maker and undertaker. His first wife was Ann Manning, and his children were all born in the old country. His oldest daughter married Charles F. French, the second, A. Mellen Rice, of Boston, third, Edwin F. Ambrose, fourth, Edwin F. Ambrose, and the fifth unmarried, resides with her father. For second wife, Mr. Goodwin married, May 16, 1860, Maria, widow of Aaron Wilkins, whose maiden name was Martin. He was first in company with George Noyes, subsequently Thomas Barnard became connected with the firm, and for several years the firm name was Goodwin, Noyes & Barnard.
GORHAM.
DAVID GORHAM, was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 7, 1763. His ancestors were of Plymouth, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Pratt, of Middleborough. She had several

sisters who came to Maine. One married Jairus Shaw, of Paris; another, Judge Samuel Parris, of Hebron; and still another married Lazarus Hathaway. Mr. Gorham came quite early to Norway, and died here May 29, 1834. Children : -

WILLIAM M. GREENE, formerly a sea captain, came to Norway from Portland in 1850. He was born in Portland in 1819. His father was Captain William M. Greene, of Gorham, and his mother, Hannah R. Goold, of Portland. His grandfather was Captain Josiah Greene, of Gorham, and his grandmother, Eunice Newcomb, of Harrison. He married, in 1848, Abiah S. Frost, who was born in 1829. Children : -

GREENLEAF.
STEPHEN GREENLEAF JR., son of Stephen and Emma (Blowers) Greenleaf, was born in Boston, January 22, 1779, and married Mary, daughter of James and Mercy (Burbank) Savery, of Plymouth, January 24, 1804. He came from North Yarmouth to Norway the year following, and was the first cabinet-maker here. He was a soldier in the 1812 war. He died in Norway, July 4, 1854, and his wife died November 18, 1858. ANDREW P. GREENLEAF, of another family, married Betsey W. Faunce. He was long a Deputy Sheriff, enlisted in the army, and was killed in his first engagement at the battle of Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864. Children : -

GROVER.
ELI GROVER, barber, was living in Norway at the time the census of 1850 was taken. His wife was Mehitable, daughter of Robbins Brown, of Bethel. He died a few years later, and his widow for a time carried on the barbering business here, and then in Bethel. She re-married. Children : -

He married, in November, 1827, Harriet Shackley, born in Norway, March 14, 1807, died August 31, 1867. Children : -

WILLIAM HALL, son of Hatevil Hall and Sarah Furbish, his wife, was born in Dover, New Hampshire, December 6, 1742. He was the fifth in descent from John Hall, an early settler of Dover. He married, June 4, 1766, Elizabeth Cox, who was born February 2, 1749, and settled in Falmouth, Maine. He died August 18, 1811, and his weight was three hundred and fifty pounds. He was a Quaker. LAZARUS HATHAWAY JR., who married Lucy, daughter of Eleazer Cole, came to Paris in early manhood, and spent the remainder of his years there. He was a valuable citizen, often employed in town affairs, and a member of the State Legislature. His children, all born in Paris, were : --

CHARLES L. HATHAWAY, son of the preceding, is a carpenter, builder and lumber dealer at the village, and one of our most enterprising business men. After the late destructive fire, which destroyed so much of the business part of our village, he was among the most ener- getic and active in rebuilding. In the lumber trade, he does a large business. He enlisted in the Twenty-third Maine Regiment, and served until the regiment was mustered out. He married, in New Haven, Connecticut, March 25, 1864, Clara H., daughter of Bartimeus and Matilda (Briggs) Dunham, who was born in Bangor, August 28, 1838. Bartimeus Dunham was the son of James and Mary (Ransom) Dunham, of Hebron, and brother of the late Rev. Ransom Dunham, of Woodstock ; he formerly lived in Paris. The only child of Charles L. and Clara H. Hathaway was : -

REV. HENRY HAWKINS (see Personal Sketch), was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in that part of it then called Cumberland, March 28, 1788. His father was Dexter Hawkins, born in Providence in 1764, and his mother, Philena Arnold, born also in Providence in 1769. He came here from Fryeburg in 1833, and became pastor of the Universalist Church. He married in October, 1811, Nabby Fuller, who was born in Winthrop, Maine, December 13, 1793, daughter of John Fuller, who was born on Cape Cod and came thence to Winthrop. She died in Fryeburg, June, 1828, and he married second, July, 1829, Hannah Stevens, who was born in Fryeburg, September 11, 1796, and died in Oxford, June 23, 1853. He moved from here to Oxford, but returned here in 1861, and died here May 31, 1866. Children : -

HAYDEN.
JOHN J. HAYDEN, by occupation an iron molder, was born in Boston, February 14, 1820, and November 25, 1847, married, in Boston, Clara J. Ames, of Norway. He was the son of Henry Hayden, who was born in Scituate, Mass., September 19, 1787, and Anna Guptill, his wife, who was born at North Berwick, January 15, 1792. Clara J. Ames was the daughter of Baker and Rebecca (Stevens) Ames, and granddaughter of Samuel Ames, our early miller. (See Ames, also Stevens.) Mr. Hayden came to Norway, where he worked at his trade, and died here September 23, 1876. Children : -

HENLEY.
JOHN HENLEY, of Reading, Massachusetts, married Sally, daughter of David and Eliza- beth (Wilkins) Upton, June 12, 1794, and came to Norway some three years later. He was a stalwart man, and few, if any in town, could match him in felling trees. He is said to have been able to fell an acre a day, of heavy old growth, and follow it for a week. His son,

Jeremiah, married Mary Blanchard, and died in 1885, in Portland, at a great age. He was a year and a half old when he rode in an ox-cart from Reading to Norway. He had a daughter who married Washington French, and another who never married. He also had one son. John Henley may have had other children, but no record has been furnished.
HERRICK.
JACOB W. HERRICK, farmer, son of Joseph and Lydia (Safford) Herrick, of Minot, born in Minot, December 5, 1805, married, November 16, 1828, Lucy, daughter of Zebulon and Mary (Staples) Chadbourne, of Oxford, who was born in Oxford, September 7, 1807. His grandfather, John Herrick, was of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Children : -
