HISTORY OF NORWAY.

PART II.

GENEALOGICAL REGISTERS.

COMPARATIVELY a great amount of labor has been bestowed upon this part of the history, and yet it is far from complete. The loss of the early town records has been a serious embarrassment, as the records of intentions of marriages, marriages, births, and deaths had been carefully kept and were unusually full and accurate. These were all destroyed when the residence of the town clerk was burned in 1843. The next town clerk did everything in his power to repair the loss, by traveling through the town and gathering up such data as he was able, but quite a number of the early families had deceased or left town, and his work was necessarily very incomplete. Of some of the early families, notably the Milletts, Reeds, Smiths, Parsonses, Merrills, etc., the records will be found quite full and complete, due to the fact that some member of each family had sufficient interest in the matter, to furnish the necessary data. In other cases where little or no interest has been manifested on the part of any one, the records will be found imperfect. It is fre- quently the case that those who have neglected to send in their records are the ones who find most fault with the compiler of the book, and it will probably be so in this case. Circulars were sent by the committee to every family in town and to many out of town, in which the kind of information desired was clearly set forth ; not more than half these cir- culars were filled and returned. The compiler has also written hun- dreds of letters bearing upon the same subject, many of which still remain unanswered. Where an early family has no representative left in town, the compiler has made every effort to obtain the desired infor- mation from other sources, and generally with success, but families resident in the town, who had been furnished with the circular, knew what was going on and what was required, and who neglected to

respond, have not been further appealed to, and if they are left out, it is certainly their own fault. There is no doubt that errors in dates will be found. No genealogical work was ever published without more or less of them, and such errors are quite as often the fault of the person furnishing the material, as of the compiler. It is hoped that an unusual number of mistakes may not be found in these records.
