He carried the mail on horseback. He afterward moved to Paris. Children : -

Clark, and resided at South Paris at one time, then in Sumner, and last in Norway. He possessed great integrity of character. He died in Norway, April 6, 1877. Children : -

JEREMIAH HOWE, brother of the preceding, born in Sumner, April 18, 1814, married Mary, daughter of Benjamin Tucker, of Norway, and was long in trade in the village. He sub- sequently moved to Portland and engaged in mercantile pursuits there. He now resides in Deering, near Woodfords Corner, while continuing in business in Portland. Children : -

JESSE HOWE JR., brother of the preceding (see Norway Physicians), graduated in medicine and was long in practice in Norway. He married, October 4, 1843, Rebecca, daughter of Samuel Gibson, of Denmark, afterward of Norway. His widow, born November 23, 1821, died October 26, 1884. Children : -

EDWIN W. HOWE, brother of the preceding, born in Sumner, February 3, 1825, has long been in trade in Norway and is still one of our most respected citizens. He married, March 23, 1851, Mary Ann, daughter of Ezra F. Beal, Esq., who was born in Portland, October 23, 1828. Children : -

II. Frank H., b. January 22, 1861.


Mrs. Howe died, and for second wife Mr. Howe married Abba D. Hill, of Wiscasset.


FREELAND HOWE (see Personal Notice), son of Jacob and Polly Benson (Howe) Howe, of Sumner, and grandson of Jesse beforenamed, and also grandson of Jeremiah (his parents were cousins), born in Sumner, December 5, 1833, and married, December 5, 1857, Mary L. Fields, born January 22, 1836. Children : -

JOHN HOWE, of another family, son of John and Lydia (Lewis) Howe, when he was twelve years old, apprenticed himself to John Deering, carpenter, who then lived on High Street in Paris. His term of service was seven years, in which he fully mastered the trade, and became a successful builder in Paris and adjoining towns. He afterward engaged in lumbering in Stoneham. He is now living with his daughter, Sarah Thurston, in Norway Village. He married, 1830, Mary Walker, daughter of Gustavus A. Goss. Children : -

JONES.


CAD F. JONES, an early settler and prominent in town and military affairs, was of Andover, Massachusetts. He married Joanna Eaton, of Reading, and their only child and daughter married Benjamin French.


GEORGE PARMENTER JONES, by profession a dentist, came to this town from Lovell, in 1864. He is the son of Abel Parmenter Jones, who was born in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, March 13, 1792, and of his wife, Mary Corey, who was born in Westford, Massachusetts, Feb- ruary 22, 1795. His grandfather was Abel Jones, of Ashburnham, and his grandmother, Annie Parmenter, of the same town. Dr. Jones was born in Westford, Massachusetts, Janu- ary 7, 1830, and June 25, 1854, he married Olevia Stearns, who was born December 4, 1829. He has been a prominent man of the village and town, and has served in the Maine Legisla- ture. Children : -

The Jordans of Norway are descended from Robert Jordan, who was an Englishman, a minister of the established church, and early at Cape Elizabeth. For an extended account of this family, the reader is referred to the " Jordan Memorial," published in 1882.


JOSEPH JORDAN, son of Jeremiah, and the fifth in descent from Robert Jordan, the emi- grant, was born in Falmouth, or Cape Elizabeth, in 1750. He married first, Elizabeth Robin- son, and second, Mary Steel, who died in Norway in 1830. He moved from Cape Elizabeth to Gorham, and later to Norway. Children: -

TIMOTHY JORDAN JR. married first, Mercy Pike, second, Abby E. Starbird, and third, Nancy Brown. He lived in Oxford thirty-five years, but died in Norway, March 23, 1881' aged eighty-one years. He enlisted in the Fourteenth Maine Regiment, although over sixty years of age, and was discharged for disability occasioned by sunstroke. His death was the result of an injury received by a collision when he was out riding with his daughter in a sleigh. Children : -

ELIJAH JORDAN came to this town from Greenwood, where he settled in 1801. Here he lived on what is known as Pleasant Street. He married Elizabeth Leach, daughter of Thomas Cowan, the early millman at the village, whose wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Jona- than and Elizabeth (Leach) Shurtleff. He died in October, 1859, and his wife in 1861. Children : -

JAMES H. JORDAN, son of Wales Jordan, who was born in Gray, December 9, 1794, and Mary Ann Proctor, his wife, born in Waterford, December 25, 1792, and grandson of Captain David Jordan, was born in Albany, December 23, 1827. He is a farmer, and lives in Norway He married, April 28, 1853, Martha Pierce, of Norway. Children : -


I. Mary E., b. August 9, 1854; m., March, 1853, John W. Pierce.


II. Newel F., b. October 1, 1857 ; d. June 14, 1859.


JUDKINS.


PERRY D. JUDKINS, of Greenwood, married Fanny P. Town, of Norway. He was the son of Moses Judkins, who married a Perry, and had, beside Perry D. : Josiah, Moses Jr., Aruna, Olive, and Lydia, all of whom are dead. Perry D. Judkins had the following children : -


I. Amos C., b. Norway, September, 1837; m. Mary F. North ; resides Newton, Mass.


II. Oliver Wendell Holmes, b. August 7, 1839; m. Isanna J. Edwards.


III. Harmon S., b. June, 1842; m., 1872, Flora L. Chapin, of Cambridge, Massachusetts ; r. Boston.


IV. Julius y., b. July, 1844; d. 1846.


OLIVER W. H. JUDKINS, son of the preceding, is a farrier and blacksmith, and resides in Norway. He married, November 24, 1859, Jane, daughter of Lathrop and Mary J. (Andrews) Edwards, of Otisfield, who was born June 7, 1840. Children: -

II. Albert W., b. November 11, 1862.


III. Perry W., b. July 3, 1867.


IV. Chestina F., b. March 21, 1869.


V. Flora y., b. September 3, 1871.


KIMBALL.


PETER KIMBALL JR., son of Peter Kimball,* of Bradford, born in Bradford, Massachu- setts, May 19, 1793, came with his father's family to Bridgton, and married Betsey, daughter of James and Eunice (Berry) Emerson, t March 16, 1816, born April 3, 1796. He immedi- ately moved to that part of Woodstock then called Hamlin's Gore, having commenced to clear land there the year previous. He was by trade a carpenter, and a very industrious and useful man. He was also a wheelwright, at first manufacturing cart wheels, and subsequently building a shop, where he carried on the manufacture of carriages and sleighs for many years. His boys, several of whom became famous carriage manufacturers, got their rudimentary instructions in the art in this little shop, which stood under the west side of the Whale's Back, nearly opposite the Bailey place. Mr. Kimball moved to Norway about the year 1849, where he died May 14, 1871. His wife died in Rochester, New Hampshire, June 6, 1879. Their children, all except the third, born on the Gore (she in Bridgton), were as follows : -


I. James Myrick, b. March 10, 1817; m., August 29, 1839, Arvilla, daughter of Cotton Elliot, of Rumford. He has carried on the carriage business in Bridgton and Portland.


" Peter Kimball, son of Francis, of Bradford, Massachusetts, his mother, Mary Head, was born in Bradford in 176s. He married Luey Barker, daughter of Asa, of Haverhill, whose wite was Melntable Porter, and in 17 6, moved to Bridgton, Maine, where his wife's father had already preceded him. Here he spent the remainder of his days.


+ James Emerson was the son of William Emerson, and of his wife Eliza Myrick; his wife, Eunice Berry, was the daughter of Stephen Berry, whose wite was Ann Bixby.

II. Eliza Ann, b. December 9, 1818; m., April 5, 1842, Richard Gage, son of Richard and Martha Wheelock. She is the mother of H. W. Gage, of Strout & Gage, attorneys-at-law in Portland, and resides with her son.


III. Mary, b. November 20, 1820; m., December 31, 1837, Colonel John G. Burns, of Oxford, subsequently of the Gore.


IV. Julia Emerson, b. June 6, 1823; m., September, 1844, Martin L. Burr, now of Rochester, New Hampshire.
