He married, December 26, 1833, at Baldwin, Louisa D. Sawyer, who was born May 19, 1814. JONATHAN SAUNDERS was a young unmarried man in Norway, at the time of the incorpo- ration of the town in 1797. He was born in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, in 1776, and died in

STEPHEN J. SEAVY, born in Conway, New Hampshire, December 12, 1823, was engaged for many years in the stage' business, and at one time owned a part of the line between Bry- ant's Pond and Andover and Dixfield. He married Sarah M. Graham, of Rumford, who was born March 16, 1834, and came to Norway in 1858. Children: -

ALFRED SHATTUCK, farmer, came here from Canton, Massachusetts, in 1847. He is the son of Peter and Lucie C. (Moore) Shattuck, of Andover, Massachusetts, and was born in Andover, Massachusetts, July 12, 1822. He married, February 2, 1843, Sarah Kinsley, born August II, 1825. Children : -

SHACKLEY.


SAMUEL AND JOHN SHACKLEY, brothers, and tanners by trade, moved from North Ber- wick to Kennebunk.


SAMUEL SHACKLEY was the grandfather of those who settled in Norway. His children were John, Richard, Joseph, Thomas, Ebenezer, Daniel, Keziah, and Mary.


JOHN SHACKLEY, son of Samuel, married Mary Mason, of Berwick, and lived and died on the old homestead of his father in Kennebunk. His children were Samuel, Joseph, Aaron, John, Sally, William, and Edmund. Eight children died in infancy or early childhood.


Of the above children, Samuel married Molly Shackley, of Kennebunk, came to Norway in 1815, moved to Portland, and died there in 1827; Joseph and Aaron came to Norway, and their families are given hereafter; John married Susie Shackley, of Kennebunk, and settled in Canton, Maine, where he lived and died; William came to Norway and died unmarried; Sally married a Peabody; Amy died unmarried; and Edmund lived on the homestead of his father in Kennebunk.

JOSEPH SHACKLEY, brother of Aaron, came to Norway in 1804, to take charge of the Rust tannery. He was born in Kennebunk, February 12, 1782, and died in South Paris, November 17, 1863. When a boy, he went from Kennebunk to Danvers, Massachusetts, where he served an apprenticeship at the tanner's trade. Soon after completing his term of service, he met the proprietor of Rustfield, and agreed with him to take charge of his tannery, which place he ably and faithfully filled for many years. As best man and partner, he was in the business forty years. His house was burned September 22, 1851, and he never rebuilt, but spent his closing years with his daughter, Mrs. Newhall, at South Paris. He married, December 24, 1807, Hannah Dinsmore, of Minot, who was born March 7, 1787, and who died in Norway, November 7, 1840. Children : -

SHEDD.


LEMUEL SHEDD, from Lunenburg, Massachusetts, served all through the war for Independ- ence before he came to Norway. He was said to have been a member of Washington's Life Guard. He came to Norway in 1788, and in company with Jonathan Stickney, settled on the Waterford three tiers. In 1791, he was married at Bridgton to Ruth Symonds. He was accidentally killed at a barn raising in 1818. See Annals. Children : -

JOHN SYMONDS SHEDD, brother of the preceding, born in Norway on the same farm where he died, married Alice B., daughter of Captain Ward Noyes, who died, and he married second, Sarah, daughter of James Coffin. He was a leading member of the Methodist church in the north part of the town, a kind and hospitable neighbor, and much respected citizen. He died October 30, 1885, aged nearly eighty-seven years. He was blind, or nearly so, the last few years of his life. Children, the first two by the first marriage : -

JOSHUA SMITH, son of the preceding, who married Mollie Woodman, came to Norway in 1790. He kept the tavern, now known as the Elm House. He was the first town clerk, and also town treasurer for many years as shown by the list of town officers in another place, and also held other town offices. He died October 25, 1843, and his wife, December 31, 1840. Children : -

V. Adeline, b. 1807; m. Rufus F. Beal; d. November 12, 1835.


VI. Polly, b. 1794; m. Jonathan Hall.


VII. George L., b. February 7, 1815; d. July 26, 1830.


ELIOT SMITH was by trade a carriage-maker, postmaster at the village, and for twenty-five years the efficient Secretary and Treasurer of the Oxford County Agricultural Society. He died September 28, 1873. He married first, in 1827, Sarah, daughter of Aaron and Sarah Barton, of Jay (now Canton), born February 27, 1798. Children : -


I. Helen Augusta, b. March 14, 1828; d. November 13, 1855.


II. George Elliot, b. April 1, 1832; d. July 16, 1847.


III. Sarah Malvina, b. September, 1834; d. July 25, 1835.


His wife died June 9, 1835, and he married second, July 20, 1836, Lavinia Howard Barton, born in Jay, December 20, 1805, sister of his first wife, and had : -


IV. Sarah Adeline, b. December 15, 1838; d. September 23, 1840.


V. Flora Louisa, b. September 2, 1840; m., June 15, 1865, Professor Addison E. Ver- rill, of Yale College.


VI. Sidney Irving, b. February 18, 1843; m., June 29, 1882, Eugenia P. Barber, of New Haven, Connecticut.

VII. Clarence Montrose, b. April 4, 1846; m., December 5, 1877, Frances, daughter of Peter B. Buck, of Greenwood; resides Norway; no children.


DANIEL SMITH, brother of the preceding, married, December 2, 1798, Susan Bennett, who was born July 12, 1778. He came to this town from New Gloucester in 1807, and in 1828, moved to Oxford. His first wife died September 29, 1825, and for second wife, he married, July 13, 1828, Susan Cobb, who was born March 22, 1788, and died in 1876. He was Deputy Sheriff and town treasurer of Oxford. Children : -.

II. Lavinia, b. May 4, 1803; r. in Norway; unmarried.


III. Mark Pool, b. August 2, 1806.


IV. Luther F., b. September 6, 1808; d. August 26, 1811.

VI. Ruth Bennett, b. March 3, 1820; m. Solomon Hall, of Norway; d. March 8, 1850, without children.


JONATHAN BENNETT SMITH, oldest son of the preceding, married Lydia Rust, of Norway. He engaged largely in the nursery business, was a prominent citizen, representative in 1837, and held other important offices. Children : -


I. Susan B., b. July 24, 1832; m. William A. Merrill; r. at Mechanic Falls.


II. Joseph H. R., b. 1845; m. Ella Carpenter; r. in New Hampshire.


MARK POOL SMITH, brother of the preceding (see Personal Notice), married in 1831, Jane, daughter of Benjamin Tucker. Children :-


I. Daniel, b. . , 1833; d. an infant.


II. Delphina, b. March, 1835; d. September, 1838.


III. Almira H., b. August 6, 1838; m. William F. Foster. (See Foster.)


IV. Albert, b. June 6, 1840; d. March, 1841.


Mrs. Smith died May 15, 1841, and he married second, Susan Bailey, daughter of William Tenney and Susan Bailey, his wife, of Weir, New Hampshire, and had : -


V. Edwin Whitman, b. June 4, 1843; d. October 2, 1875. He carried on the business at the grist-mill built by his father, and was a successful business man.


VI. Laurestein D., b. September 9, 1852; d. September II, 1877.


VII. Mary E., b. February 2, 1848; d. December 20, 1848.


VIII. Emma Fane, b. November 18, 1858; r. Norway.


Mrs. Smith, the second wife, died in January, 1886.


SEBASTIAN S. SMITH, born in Norway, resides in Oxford. He is a thrifty farmer, has been member of the Maine Board of Agriculture, and held other important positions. He married, November 16, 1843, Nancy M., daughter of Joseph Mixer, of Oxford. Children : -


I. Howard D., b. August 16, 1844; m., Sept, 22, 1869, Mary C., daughter of Elhanan Whitman, of Woodstock; r. at Norway, and has for many years been the efficient cashier of the National Bank. He has : I, Lee Mixer, b. in Oxford, May 5, 1872; 2, Mark Pool, b. October 8, 1874; 3, Alice M., b. in Norway, November 8, 1880; 4, Fred E., b. February 12, 1884.


TIMOTHY SMITH, of another branch of the great Smith Family, son of Merodach Smith, who was an early settler in Paris, lived in Paris and had the following children : -
