The site of the City of Adrian was pur- chased of the government by Addison J. Comstock, in September, IS25, and in the following year he moved on to the property. The village was platted in March, 1828. The first hotel was built on the site of the present Lawrence House in the same year. A postoffice in Eveline township, Charle- voix county, 70 miles northeast of Traverse City and 12 miles above Charlevoix, on the shore of Pine lake. A small steamer runs on the lake. Porter's creek affords a good water power at this point, utilized in the running of saw and grist mills. A rolling hardwood country surrounds the place, pro- ducing grain and potatoes. ATNA.


Atna is a small settlement in Denver township, Newaygo county. It is on White river 25 miles above its debouchment into White lake, 17 miles from Newaygo and 9 miles from Alleyton, which is its nearest rail- way station. The river affords a good water power and one saw and grist mill is opera- ted. Lumber and shingles only are shipped away, though the surrounding country pro- duces wheat, oats, corn and hay. A postoffice in the northwest part of Tus- cola county, 14 miles from Caro and 19 from Bay City. The country around is well adapted to agriculture but as yet only lum- ber, staves and hoops are shipped.


ALABASTER.


A village of about 400 inhabitants in Iosco county. It is situated on the west shore of Saginaw Bay, 512 miles south of Tawas City and 35 northeast of Standish, on the Jack- son, Lansing and Saginaw R. R., its nearest railroad point. A place of 350 inhabitants, in Caledonia township, Kent county, and three miles from Hammond, on the Grand River Valley Di- vision of the M. C. R. R. The Thornapple river, which runs through the town, affords excellent water privileges. Wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and butter are produced. Hard wood timber abounds in the vicinity. ALBION.


A flourishing village on the Michigan Central railroad twenty miles west of Jack- son and twelve east of Marshall. The Lan- sing branch of the L. S. & M. S. R. R. also passes through the place, by which route it is 22 miles north of Jonesville and 37 south of Lansing. Albion is in the eastern part of Calhoun county, in a fine agricultural region. Fruit and grain are the leading products marketed, The Kalamazoo river affords a good water power. The manufacturing in- terests of Albion embrace one extensive agri- cultural implement factory, which turns out 2,500 plows, 1,000 sulky horse takes and

600 cultivators per annum ; an extensive tan- nery, and several flouring mills.


The college, under the control of the Methodist Episcopal denomination, is the predominating feature of the village. This institution is now on a much stronger foot- ing than formerly, having secured an endow. ment of $200,000. The college numbers about 200 students. Rev. Geo. B. Jocelyn, D. D., is president.


There are five union school buildings and six churches in Albion, and it supports two weekly newspapers, the Recorder (Republi- can), published by Hall. Thompson, & Co., who also publish the College Annalist ; and the Mirror (Democratic), published by L .. W. Cole. There are two hotels, the Albion house and the Exchange hotel, and one bank, the National Exchange, capital $100,- 000; surplus, $12.000; S. V. Irwin. presi- dent; G. W. Davis, cashier. The village officers are : President, W. H. Brockway ; Treasurer, Frederick Hoaglin; Recorder, Seward Mahen. Population, 2,700.
