R., and is 9 mile's west of the junction of D. & M. R. R. with the C. & M. L. S. R. R., being 185 miles from Chicago by the latter route. Two other roads are in pro- cess of construction, the Fruitport, Saginaw & Canada R. R., and the Michigan and Ohio R'y. Besides its excellent railroad facilities, Grand Haven is also one of the im- portant ports of lake Michigan. It is acces- sible by the following lines of steamers : Engleman's day and night line from Milwau- kee; Goodrich's line from Chicago; Engle- man's daily line from Manistee, Pentwater, Ludington and Muskegon, and by Ganoe's daily line from Grand Rapids.
EARLY HISTORY.
Rix Robinson, an agent of the Northwest- ern Fur Company, who established a trading post here in 1825, was the first white settler. The village was laid out by Win M. Ferry, better known as "Father Ferry," who came here in 1835, and who built the first frame house. The first store and warehouse was established by Robinson, White & Williams. in 1836: the first saw mill by Butts & Hutch- ins, in IS35; and the first steam saw mill was constructed by Mr. Ferry in 1836. The population of the village at this time was about 200, and there was no material increase till 1840, when a colony of Hollanders ar- rived, about 350 of whom settled here. Grand Haven was chartered as a city in 186 ;. and George Parks was its first mayor. The present population is estimated at 6,000.
MANUFACTURES.
The principal manufacture is lumber. There are several saw mills, which turn out an aggregate of 1,500,000 per week ; an extensive shingle mill, with a capacity of 200,000 per day. A agricultural implement factory, a sish, door and blind factory, a foundry and machine shop are the other principal manufactures.
PROMINENT BUILDINGS.
Within the corporate limits are 11 churches. 2 good ward schools, and a fine union school building which cost $50.000. The Cutler House, crested at a cost of $:00,000, is a beautiful structure, and a hotel first-class in all its appointments. The Kirby House. erected in 1874, at a cost of $50,000, is a substantial and well kept hotel.

ATTRACTIONS AS A SUMMER RESORT.
One of the most attractive features of the place, and one which tends to make it more widely known, is its celebrated Magnetic Mineral Spring. It is said that not less than 15,000 persons visited Grand Haven during the past summer for the benefit of these health-giving waters. Spring lake, which lies adjacent, is a beautiful sheet of water, nine miles in length; it affords fine opportunities for fishing and sailing. In addition to these attractions, and to the broad area of lake Michigan, with its surf-bathing, Grand Haven is in the center of the great fruit-belt of Michigan. Asa Reynolds, postmaster.
