DETROIT JUNCTION.
Locally known as Grand Trunk Junction, a suburb of Detroit, at a point just west of the city, whence six different railroad lines radiate, 5 of the 6 running into Detroit from thence over the M. C. R. R. track. The various roads are the Canada Southern, the L. S. & M. S. R. R., the M. C. R. R., the D. L. & L. M. R. R., the Detroit & Bay City and the Grand Trunk railway of Cana- da. The number of trains passing and re- passing this point daily is enormous, and as all stop here, this is one of the busiest rail- road centers in the west. The cheapness of land hereabouts is fast luring manufacturers from the city. The Detroit Bridge and Iron Works have long been located near by. The Michigan Car Company removed thither a year or two since, and in 1874 all the car and
repair shops and engine houses of the Michi- gan Central were removed to this point. Besides these there is an extensive slaughter and packing house and several extensive brick yards in the immediate vicinity. It is also the location of the railroad cattle yards. Considerable property has lately been platted and sold, and the Junction is destined ere long to become a populous and busy quarter of Detroit. A postoffice has been established under the title of Detroit Junction. Augus- tus R. Sink, postmaster.

DEXTER.
Dexter is a handsome little village of some 1,500 inhabitants, on the M. C. R. R., 48 miles west of Detroit. It is in the town of Scio, Washtenaw county, 9 miles northwest of Ann Arbor.
It is located at the junction of the Huron river and Mill creek, on a high and dry gravelly soil, rendering its streets almost equivalent to a pavement and easy to be kept in repair. The town is well laid out and well provided with fine residences.
Its school accommodations are first-class. Its other public buildings consist of four churches-Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal and Catholic, the latter being a fine brick edifice just completed.
The manufacturing enterprises of the town consist of the two flouring mills and plaster mills of Evarts & Co., and R. P. Copland, the cider and planing mill, sash, blind and door factory of Phelps & Sill Bros., woolen mill and saw mill of L. Palmer & Son., carriage and wagon factories of J. Bailey and William Kerns & Co.
The town has one local paper, the Dexter Leader, independent republican in politics, published by A. McMillan.
Dexter was settled about 1823, by Hon. S. C. W. Dexter, from Boston. For a long time it was the frontier settlement in this State, beyond which all was wilderness, traversed only by Indian trails. The Michigan Central was opened to Dexter on July 4th, 1841. James T. Honey postmaster.
