FAYETTE.


A village on the east shore of Dig Bay du Noque, one of northern arms of Green bay, in the township of Fairbanks, Delta county, 30 miles due east of Escanaba. The latter place is its nearest approach by rail. It was settled about 1867, having grown up around a blast furnace established here by the Jackson Iron Company. This furnace fur- nishes the principal business of the place. Wm. Pinchin, postmaster.

FENTON,


An incorporated village in Genesee county. (See bentonville.)


FENTONVILLE,


A thriving incorporated village in the town. ship of Fenton, Genesee county. It is on the D, & M. R. R., 50 miles from Detroit,


and 5 miles west of Holly. The north branch of the Shiawassee river flows through the village, affording a good water power. The village contains a population of 2.110. It was first settled in 1834, and named after Hon. Wm. Fenton, one of its early settlers. and father of the late Col. Win. M. Fenton, of Flint .. It became incorporate ! in 1863. It is surrounded by a good roll- ing farming country, in which- all the products of the State grow in abundance. Wheat, wool, pork, butter, eggs and apples form the leading articles of shipment. Fen tonville numbers among its manufacturing interests a woolen factory, extensive flouring mills, a saw mill, two planing mills and sash factories, a knitting factory, a pump factory. a foundry and machine shop, an agricultural implement factory, etc.


There are two local papers, Gazette an ! Independent.


In educational advantages Fentonville i- second to few towns in the State. In addi- tion to a large union and two ward schools, the Baptists of Michigan have here a semi- nary which has cost somewhere from $30.000 to $40,000. The Episcopalians have also erected to seminaries in different parts of the village, one for gentlemen and one for ladies. The former, though not entirely completed, has been in use a portion of the past year. The latter is not yet ready for occupancy.


"There are five churches-Methodist. B.p. tist, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Catholic. the two former of which are fine edifices The Universalists contemplate buikling.


There is a beautiful lake about two miles from Fentonville, which is becoming a great resort for pleasure seekers. There are two steam pleasure boats and a number of yachts upon it. Abundance of fish are found in it. Express-American. Telegraph -West. ern Union. Wm. Guest, postmaster.

A station and postoffice on the D. I .. & L. M. R. R., 57 miles from Detroit and 5 west of Howell. It is in Howell township, Liv- ingston county, and is the center of a good farming country. Population 125. E. D. Drew, postmaster.

FLINT.


The county seat of Genesee county and one of the most beautiful and thrifty of the smaller cities of Michigan. It is situated at the intersection of the F. & P. M. R'y, with the Chicago and Lake Huron R. R., and is 64 miles northwest of Detroit, 34 miles southeast of East Saginaw, 66 miles west of Port Huron and IOS north of Toledo. It contains by the last census a population of just 4,200. It is situated on the Flint river, a branch of the Saginaw, which affords the facilities for an extensive lumber business at this point. There are 9 saw mills and as many planing mills, with 5 sash, door and blind factories. The saw mills cut in I874


about 52,000,000 feet of lumber, 15,000.000 shingles and 8,000,000 lath. About $1, too,- ooo of capital is used and employment is af- forded for 428 men. Flint has three banks, two national and one savings. Aggregate capital $375,000, aver- age deposits $320,000.


The produce handled at Flint includes 170,000 bushels wheat, 262, 500 bushels oats, 62,000 bushels corn, 24,350 bushels pota- toes, 5,558 barrels apples, 19,500 pounds poultry, 17,300 dozens eggs, 190,000 pounds butter, 1,090 tons hay, 227,000 pounds wool, 10,300 hogs, etc., aggregating in value $1, 103,000.


Flint has S churches and 6 hotels. The Thayer House, which is decidedly the best Hotel in the city, is centrally located and in close connection with the railroad depot. Every attention is paid to guests by its clerks, and the table is supplied with every delicacy the season affords. Its schools have always been excellent. They employ 29 teachers and have 1,974 scholars on their rolls.


Not less than $250,000 worth of building was done during the year IS74.


Flint has three excellent weekly news- papers, the Globe and the Citizen, republican, and the Democrat. It also has a scientific institute, a ladies' library association, a rid- ing park association and various Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.


The Michigan institution for the education of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind, now in a very flourishing condition, is located a short distance southwest of the city. John Algoe, postmaster.
