CENTREVILLE.

Centreville, the county seat of St. Joseph county, is situated on the M. C. R. R. Air line. 6 miles east of Three Rivers, and 64 miles west of Jackson. The population of the town is somewhere from 1,000 to 1,200.

-

The soil of the county is a gravelly loam, and the timber mostly oak. But for its naturally good streets, the people would pro- bably have had their town incorporated long before this. As it is, however, there is no power to compel the building of a sidewalk, nor even the purchase of a pail to aid in sup- pressing a conflagration. With a little more enterprise in this direction, Centreville would be an exceedingly pleasant town.

Hog creek, or Prairie river, as it is inter- changeably called, affords a passable water power, susceptible of greater improve- ment.

The manufacturing enterprises consist of the Centreville Knit-Goods Manufacturing company, with a capital stock of $65,000. It has a large three-story brick building. erect- ed last year. Some 65 hands are employed in the manufacture of knit-goods. An Alden and Jones fruit-drying establishment has recently been established, with $10,000 capital stock. Also the flouring mill of Kline & Holt, large foundry and machine shop of William Allison, the wagon and carriage shop of Dexter & Thomas. A cotton-batting company has just been organized in connec- tion with the fruit-drying establishment, with an increase of capital to $20,000.

The public buildings of Centreville con- sist of a fair wooden court house, brick fire proof offices and a good brick jail. A $22,- owo school house will soon be ready for oc- cupancy.

The spiritual interests of the town are, or ought to be, well attended to with four churches, the methodist, baptist, united presbyterian and reformed, each of which has good wooden buildings, save the baptist, which is a very good brick.

The only newspaper published here is the Centreville Republican, owned by HI. Ega. broad.

It is within a mile of the beautiful lake Michigammie, and was the location of the Champion bot blast furnace, which, however, was burned down in April, 1874, and owing to the depressed condition of the iron market, was not rebuilt, though much of the property was saved, and $15.000 ·to $18,000 would suffice to put it in opera- tion again. The stoppage of the furnace has caused the village to decline in popula- tion and business, though the proprietors (The Morgan Iron Company) still keep a number of hands to work their farm in the vicinity. The Champion iron mine, located abouta mile south of the village, and owned by the Champion Iron Company, is doing well, and has all the accessories of a first. class mine. " Loveliest village of the plain."

The Grand River Valley Division of the Michigan Central R R. crosses the Chicago & Lake Huron R. R. at this point, affording competition in traffic both east and west. No finer stores are to be found in any city of its size in the west, and its business men are live, active and thriving.

Charlotte has 2 excellent hotels, 2 banks, 5 churches, excellent school buildings, and some fine residences. In the manufacturing line it has two Houring mills, a large handle factory, which has also recently commenced upon an extensive scale the manufacturing of Willard's patent double stave barrels. The Charlotte Manufacturing Company, with a capital of 25,000. do an immense business in manufacturing staves. The Gip. son fanning mill is also mide here. T'here are three foundries and machine shows. by a greatful public. The Eaton County Agricultural Society grounds are within the city. They are being nicely arranged and one of their most marked features is a grove of about ten acres. The county jail, situ- ated here, is the admiration of all whosee it.

Charlotte became a city in 1871, and elected Hon. E. S. Lacey its first mayor, to whom it is much indebted for the excellence of its governmental regulations. During that year many public improvements were made, and the like have steadily increased to the present time. It has a steam fire department and one of Silsby's third size engines.

No healthier place can be found and its inhabitants are moral and cultivated.
