The locality has been settled since 1859, and the country is well improved. Population abont 300. It has a tri-weekly mail.


ELMWOOD.


A village of about 200 population, first settled in 1857, and situated on Cass river, whence it derives a good water power, in the township of Elmwood, Tuscola county. It. is 9 miles northeast of Caro, in an excellent farming country. Reese on the D). & B. C. R. R., 27 miles east is its shipping point. Wheat and lumber are the principal commo- dities forwarded. The county seat of Delta county, an in- corporated village of 3.155 inhabitants, situated in Escanaba township, on the west shore of Little Bay du Nognet, an arm of Green Day It is also on the Peninsula divi sion of the Chicago & Northwestern R. K. 356 miles north of Chicago, and 76 south of Marquette It is one of the three shipping points for the upper peninsula iron ore, il rival- Marquette in the extent of these ship- ments. It has two extensive from dircks with facilities for receiving and shipping 700 loaded car- of ore per day. An incorporated village of 1,200 to 1,300 inhabitants in Evart and Osceola townships, in the eastern part of Osceola county. Evart


is on the F. & P. M. R. R., distant from De- troit, 174 miles, from Ludington. 62 miles, and is 14 miles east of Reed City, the cross- ing of the G. R. & I. R. R. The F. & P. M. K. R. here crosses the Muskegon river. A dam has lately been built on the river and a booming company organized, with Geo. E. Mills as president. There is good available water power on the river here, which, however, so far remains unused. Evart is quite a new place, having been first settled only in IS71. A village of 300 inhabitants in the town of Fairfield, Lenawee county, 6 miles due south of Adrian, It is on the Chicago & Canada Southern R. K., so miles from Trenton crossing, and 67 from Detroit. It is the center of a fine farming country, largely devoted to dairying, and an extensive cheese factory is here located. Cheese and hogs form the principal shipments. Fairfield was settled about 1832. It has a daily mail, O. II. Alger, postmaster.

FAIR GROVE.


A postoffice in Fair Grove township, Tus- cola county. 13 miles north of Vassar, which is its nearest railway point. A postoffice in Ira township, St. Clair county. It is on the shore of lake St. Clair, 4 miles east of New Baltimore, 25 south of Port Huron, and 35 northeast of Detroit. A settlement of about 100 inhabitants in Vergennes township, Kent county. Ins miles north of Lowell, and 20 east of Grand Rapids. FALMOUTH.


A village of 500 population on Clam river, a branch of the Muskegon, in the central part of Missauke county, 22 miles east of Clam Lake, on the G. R. & I. R. R. It is the location of a large saw and shingle mill owned by Thos. Palmer, of Detroit, and pine logs, lumber and shingles are its only pro- ducts, though the country around, which con- sists of beech, maple and pine rolling lands, raises successfully wheat, corn. oats, barley, millet and potatoes. It has a weekly mail. Ira Van Meter, postmaster.
