BAY CITY.

Bay City, the county seat of Bay county, is situated on the east bank of the Saginaw river, four miles from its mouth. The river is navigable to this point for the largest sized vessels. Bay City is the northern terminus of the Detroit and Bay City railroad, also of the main line of the Flint and Pere Mar- quette. The Jackson, Lansing and Saginaw .railroad passes through it and it will be the castern terminus of the Grand Rapids and Bay City railroad, not yet completed. Its commercial advantages are thus very great.

The population is now claimed to be up- wards of 14,000 and rapidly increasing. Dur- ing the first six months of IS73, $1,000,000 were expended in building improvements within the corporate limits of the city. These limits comprise an area four miles in length by two in breadth. The city con- tains 12 churches, a high school and five ward schools, 4 banks with a united capital of $760,000, about 25 hotels of all grades, 2 daily and 3 weekly newspapers, and one of the finest opera houses in the State.

Bay City is essentially a manufacturing city, though as yet these interests are con- fined chiefly to lumber and salt. There are however several foundries and machine shops and a very extensive wooden gas and water pipe factory. The city is lighted with gas and supplied with water by the Holly system. The pumps are supplied with pure water from Saginaw Bay through a conduit pipe of 30 inches diameter, 4% miles in lenth, and is distributed in the city through over 20 miles of the wooden pipe manufac- tured in the city and which gives excellent satisfaction.

In public buildings Bay City can point with pride to architectural beauty and adornment combined with solidity, surpissed by no city in the State.

The city contains 77 manufacturing estab- lishments with an aggregate capital of $4 .- 0$6,789. Of these 28 are saw mill in

BAY

which are 34 circular saws and 21 gangs. The lumber shipments of the city during the season of 1874 aggregate 350,000,000 feet, of a value of four and a half million of dollars.

Bay City is situated upon the great salt basin of the Saginaw Valley, the develop- inent of which commencing in 1860, with the shipment from the city of 2,000 barrels, has reached the enormous amount of 486,343 barrels shipped in 1874, value $700,000.

In population Bay City has increased from Soo in 1860 to 7,064 in 1870, and 13,676 in 1874, a rate of increase which enables her to rank fourth in point of numbers as com- pared with other cities in the State. The population is largely made up from the East- ern States, while the thrifty Germans, indus- trious Canadian French, Irish and Poles form a heterogenious population, the con- bination of which proves eminently satisfac- tory in the growth and progress of the city.

The aggregate value of property within the corporate limits of the city increased trom $5,000,000 in 1870 to $9,000,000 in 1874. The school property of the city is valued at $125,000 including the handsome high school building, costing $40,000, and five ward buildings one of which is of brick, recently completed, and cost $12,000.

The water works have cost the city thus far $227,000, which will be increased to $300,000 by the full completion of the sys- tem, including the inlet pipe, costing $100,- 000. The completion of this system will leave Bay City second in the State in point of water supply, in its purity and abundance.

Its paid fire department consists of four hose companies of seven men each, taking their water supply from the hydrants, which are found at every street intersection.

The regular police force of the city con- sists of nine men, including the marshal and assistant marshal. When it is remeui- bered that this force is efficient to preserve order in a city spreading over a distance of four miles in length by two in breadth, whose population is augmented in the spring of the year by thousands of transient men from the Inmber camps in the adjoining counties, it may well be said to speak vol- umes for the good character of the popula- tion.

In street improvements Bay City ranks second only to Detroit among the cities of the State, Five of its principal streets are paved with the Nicolson and Wycoff patent wood pavements, of which about three miles in length has been laid. Over one iaile of this is of white cedar blocks. The city has purchased the Wycoff patent, and the laying of two miles of paving is con- templated for the season of 1875. About four miles of the streets are planked.

The city enjoys the advantages of a pub- lic library, comprising about 5,000 volumes, from which by the report of the librarian there was given out between April Ist and December 15th, 1874, 14,500 volumes, with a loss of but three volumes.

The churches of the city will compare favorably with those of other cities of the State in number, value; and membership. That of the First Baptist Society, costing $So,coo, can boast according to experts, " the most beautiful, symmetrical and per- fectly proportioned spire on the continent." In membership the different societies are eminently prosperous.

The growth of Bay City is undoubtedly due to a great extent to the railroad facilities presented by the Flint and Pere Marquette, which here makes its northern terminas. The Detroit and Bay City Railroad connect- ing at Lapeer with the Port Huron and Lake Michigan, and the Jackson, Lansing and Saginaw Railroad, which on its line from Jackson and the south to its ultimate terminus at Mackinac, crosses the Saginaw river to Bay City, making junction with the Detroit and Bay City Railroad. These several lines of road are connected at the southern limits of the city and again near the business center, by the Bay City Street and Transit Railroad, which, with its track of six miles, extending from Essexville at the mouth of the river to the south limits of the city, is calculated to enable the transfer of rail cars from the mills and manufactories on its line to the different roads ; thus bring. ing the entire body of manufacturing estab- lishments in the city into the enjoyment of all the privileges to be obtained from these lines of road connecting with all portions of the land, facilities enjoyed by the inhabitants of but few cities in the nation.

A recently published history of the city, by H. S. Dow of the Lumberman's Gazette, is a readable work of 100 pages, replete with valuable information of a historic and statis. tical nature.
