CHASE.


The county seat of Lake county, avillage of 100 inhabitants, situated on the Marquette river and the F. & P. M. R. R. Distance from Detroit 148 miles, from Ludington 40 miles. The place was only settled in IS67, but already has a good union school and the inevitable weekly newspaper (the Herald.) Lumber and shingles are the only shipments. The country around comprises fine beech and maple lands, adapted to the usual grain and root crops of northern Michigan. Thos. D. Talbot, postmaster.

CHEBOYGAN.


The county seat of Cheboygan county, a village of about 2,751 inhabitants, situated at the mouth of the Cheboygan river, on the south shore of the straits of Mackinac. It will be the northern terminus of the Jack- son, Lansing and Saginaw railroad, when


completed. Hence it promises some day to become a place of considerable importance. It now contains 6 saw mills, cutting annually 35,000,000 feet of lumber, 2 shingle mills. 2 foundries and machine shops, 2 planing mills, a furniture factory, a grist mill and some 30 or 40 stores. It also has a $10,000 union school house and two handsome churches. There are also 6 hotels and a weekly newspaper. The harbor is being im- proved by government. The first settlement was made here in 1846, and the village in- corporated in 1871. It has a tri-weekly mail. Telegraph -- Western Union. Ex- press-McClure & Co's. CHELSEA.


The village of Chelsea is situated on the Michigan Central railroad, 56 miles west of Detroit, and 21 east of Jackson. It is in the township of Sylvan, Washtenaw county, in the best wheat district of the State. Its population is not far from 1,000. It has no water power, but considering its size it has a fair show of manufacturing enterprises, num- bering among them a cider and planing mill, large brick and tile factory, pump factory, marble factory, barrel and stave factory, foundry and machine shop, carriage and wagon shops and others.


A good union school under the manage- ment of Prof. G. A. Brown and five assist- ants is in successful operation.


There are five church edifices in town- Congregational, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran and Catholic.

CHESANING.


A flourishing lumbering village on the Shiawassee river and J. L. & S. R. R., in Chesaning township, Saginaw county. It is 15 miles north of Owosso, and 21 south of Saginaw City. It is a place of 1,000 in- habitants.


The surrounding country is being devoted more to agriculture than heretofore, "as the lumber has been cut off so that the neares? lumber camps are from 10 to 12 mile- distant. The soil is of sandy loam and very productive.

CHIPPEWA LAKE.


A postoffice in the town of Chippewa, Mecosta county, II miles south of Evart on the F. & P. M. R. R. Its locality was settled about 1866, embraces good farming lands and produces wheat, corn, oats and potatoes. It has a weekly mail. S. V. Tice, postinaster.

CLAM LAKE.


A flourishing village of about 1, 500 inhabitants on the G. R. &I. R. R., in Clam Lake township, Wexford county. It is 9£ miles north of Grand Rapids, and 28 north of. Reed City, the crossing of the F. & P. M. R. R. It takes its name from the lake on which it is situated, on the shores of which a number of saw mills are operated. Indeed. lumber, lath, shingles and Norway pine tim- ber are about the only productions though a good farming country surrounds the village. The place was first settled only in 1871. CLARE.


Is a village of soo inhabitants in Grant township, on the southern line of Clare coun. ty, 5 miles east of Farwell, the county seat. It is on the line of the F. & P. M R. R., 50 miles above East Saginaw. Clare is quite a new town, having been settled only in De- cember 1870, but now contains 3 saw and shingle mills, one planing mill, 3 hotels and several stores and shops. Stages leave here daily upon arrival of trains for Mount Pleas- ant, 15 miles south. The principal articles of manufacture and export are lumber, shin- gles, staves and hoops. Clare has a fine new frame school building, with an average attendance of about 60 scholars. It has also one church (Congregational,) Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American.
