EATON RAPIDS.
Eaton Rapids is a flourishing incorporat- ed village of some 2, 500 inhabitants in. the township of the same name in the southeast corner of Eaton county. It is situated at the intersection of the Grand River Valley divi- sion of the M. C. K. R., and the Lansing branch of the L. S. & M. S. R. R. On the former road it is 24 miles west of Jackson and on the latter 20 north of Albion. and 17 south of Lansing. It is 10 miles from Charlotte the county seat. Grand river flows through the village and furnishes power for one large Hlouring mill. Besides this there are a carding mill, a sash, door and blind factory, a foundry and a stave factory. There are a number of stores, and the place enjoys a fine trade with the sur- rounding country. But the place is chiefly famous for its mineral waters, it choming in- deed the appellation of the Saratoga of Michigan. Artesian wells are sunk a few hundred feet, when the waters possessing strong magnetic properties flow from the sur. face in copious streams. They are slightly
cathartic in their effects, and are highly ex- tolled for their cures in cases of dyspep-in and also rheumatic affections. The great number of people that flock to Eaton Rapils for the benefit of the waters, led to the erec- tion of several large hotels. The largest of these, the. Vanghan 'House, was recently destroyed by fire. The Anderson House is a large four story brick, with all the modern im- provements, and handsomely fitted up. The Frost House is a less pretentious but com- fortable hotel. Besides the drinking and bathing on the spot, large quantities of the water are bottled or barreled for shipment to all parts of the country. The village has Methodist, Congregational, Baptist and Episcopal churches, good schools and other features making it a desirable place of resi- cence. It is reached by both the American and United States Express Companies. Telegraph, Western Union. H. N. Hamil- ton, postmaster.
