Antrim is situated on the east shore of Grand Traverse bay in the northwest corner of Antrim county. It has one grist mill and one store. Shipments are wheat, hay, oats, bark and wood. A new postoffice in the southwest corner of Arbela township, Tuscola county. It is four miles from Clio on the F. & P. M. R. R. The country around is rolling timber land. ARMADA.


Armada is a thriving little town of some 600 inhabitants, pleasantly situated about mid- way between Romeo and Ridgeway on the Chicago and St. Clair railway. It is in Ar- mada township, Macomb county, and is the center of a prosperous agricultural region. It has no water power and its manufacturing enterprises are limited, embracing only the stave and handle factory of C. S. Farrell, the sash and blind factory of M. S. Lyon and the flouring mill of Spaulding and MIcCauley. Armada has a good union school and four churches, Methodist, Congregational, Bap- " tist, and Seventh Day Adventist. The Ar- mada Index is published semi-monthly. Flour, cheese, staves and handle‹ constitute the principle shipments. The Western Un- ion Telegraph Company have an office here. Postmaster, E. F. A postoffice in Mayfield township, Lapeer county, 1012 miles northwest of Lapeer on the mail route to North Branch. The vil- lage is known as Five Lakes. It it two miles distant fromn Stephens or Fish Lake on the Lapeer and Northern railroad. It is in a pine region and ships lumber and shingles. Postmaster, Wm G. Stone. Population, 110.

A beautiful little village of about 900 in- habitants situated in the midst of roliing hills and small lakes, on the Chicago and Port Huron railway. 7 miles east of La- peer and 29 west of Port Huron. It is in Attica township, Lapeer county. Lumber, shingles, flour, grain and hay are shipped. Express, American, Telegraph, Western Union. I. N. Jenness, postmaster. Attica was settled in 1852 as a lumbering village, a large tract of pine land lying to the north. A good farming country surrounds the vil- lage. The latter contains a new methodist church, a large school house, a flouring mill and several saw and shingle mills, all run by steam, and several good hotels.

A settlement of 100 inhabitants in the northwest corner of Antrim county. It is 22 miles north of Elk Rapids and four from Norwood, on Traverse Bay. Traverse City, 40 miles distant, is the nearest rail- road point. AUGUSTA.


A village of about 700 inhabitants on the Michigan Central railroad, in the northeast part of Kalamazoo county. It is 130 miles from Detroit and 14 east of Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo river affords water power and there are several - manufacturing establish- ments, including a foundry, a planing mill, an agricultural implement factory-and two flouring mills. Aurelius is a place of about 400 inhabi- tants in the western part of Ingham county. It is eight miles southwest of Mason and 434 miles west of Chapin's station, on the J. L. & S. R. R. AU SABLE.


AnSable is a port of Lake Huron situated at the mouth of Au Sable river, in Oscoda township, Iosco county. Agriculture re- ceives soine attention but on account of the vast pine forests in the immediate neighbor- hood, the lumber interests engage the larger share of the attention of the inhabitants. There are here six large gang saw mills em- ployed in the manufacture of lumber and square timber, for- general stores, two gro- cers, two dealers . long timber and masts, one sash factory, one bank, three hotels and three churches. Au Sable was first settled in 1849 and incorporated in 1872, and has now 2,500 inhabitants. Distance from Ta- was City, its county town, 15 miles, and 160 from Detroit. During the season of naviga- gation shipments are made via Bay City. The "exports are lumber, timber and fish. Telegraph, Western Union ; Express, Holt's, and Reed & Green's. Geo. P.
