DETROIT MANUFACTURES.
Detroit is essentially a manufacturing city, possessing from its easy water commu- nication and its proximity to the inexhausti- ble mines and forests of the State, peculiar advantages, as yet, however, only very par- tially improved. There can be no doubt that the time is coming when the banks of the Detroit river will be lined with mills and factories, rendering it the Birmingham of the Northwest.
According to one authority, there are now actually about 400 different concerns in the city engaged strictly in manufacturing. The procuring of exact statistics on the subiect is a matter of extreme difficulty. The Evening News, in January, 1875, made an earnest and conscientious effort in this direction, with results epitomized in the fol- lowing table :

The Northwestern Manufacturers' Journal, in February, 1874, compiled statistics of the manufactures of Detroit, which showed $14,518,500 capital used, 12,157 hands em- ployed, and $28,408,000 in value of product turned out. Though prepared entirely in. dependently of each other, and arrived at in a different way, the nearness of the final results of the two estimates is very signifi- cant of approximate correctness.
Taking into account the number of manu. facturers who refused to make any return, the large number of small concerns not called on, the extensive interests in Windsor and Wyandotte carried on by Detroit men and with Detroit capital, and the manufacturing of cars and machinery for their own use by the railroad companies, none of which ap. pear in the above statement, and allowing for the fact that 1874 was a year of excep- tional financial depression, and that in some branches, particularly in the manufacture of iron, business was almost entirely suspended during the year, it will not be deemed ex- travagant to place the aggregate manufac- tures of Detroit at the snug little annual sum of $50,000,000.
BANKS.
Detroit has never enjoyed banking facili- ties adequate to her extended trade and her manufacturing interests have no doubt suffer- ed in consequence. Banking has neverthe- less been profitable, and in the establishment of a few more national banks at this point a good field offers for capital. The present list of incorporated banks is as follows :
Capital.

Besides these there are several private banks of considerable financial strength and doing an extensive business. These include A. Ives & Sons, David Preston & Co .. Vin- cent [. Scott, Fisher, Booth & Co., Crom- well & Ralston. W. D. Morton, etc.
There are two insurance companies both in a healthy condition. These are the De- troit Fire and Marine and the Michigan Mutual Life Insurance Company.
RAILROADS.
The railroads centering in Detroit are 9 in number, as follows :
The Michigan Central, recognized as one of the best managed, and finest equipped ronds in the west, extending to Chicago with branches to all important points in the State.

Hon. James F. Joy, the railroad king of the west, resides in Detroit, and from this point manipulates the destinies of some thousands of miles of road.
THE NEWSPAPERS.
The press of Detroit does credit to the city. There are eight daily newspapers-3 German and 5 English. The oldest andi perhaps the most prosperous and enterpris- ing is the Detroit Free Press (Democratic). As a humorous journal, too, the Free Press is rapidly attaining a national reputation. The Daily Post occupies a front rank in ability among the republican political jour- nals of the country. The Tribune possesses sterling merits as a carefully edited, reliable and conscientious newspaper, and its weekly edition enjoys a circulation superior to that of any other political paper in the State. The Evening News, a cheap or two cent afternoon paper, established in 1873. has, in the immense circulation it has attained (12,000 copies daily ) and the degree of popu- larity and prosperity it has reached, proved one of the most striking newspaper successes of the age. The Daily Sun is a newly fledged afternoon paper, sold at one cent. The Commercial Advertiser, a literary and commercial weekly has a very wide circula- tion, and with the Michigan Farmer, Four- nal of Commerce and the Leader, and three religious papers creditably represents the field of weekly journalism.
