A place of 150 inhabitants in Greenbush township, Alcona county. It is on the lake Huron shore, six miles south of Harrisville and 12 north of Au Sable. GREENLAND.
A mining village in Greenland township, Ontonagon county, 12 miles southeast of On- tonagon, and 29 miles west of L'Anse. The latter is the nearest point to it that can be reached by rail. The place was first settled about 1854 and now numbers 600 inhabi- tants. It is the location of several copper mines but none of them very productive. Copper is the only article of shipment. An important manufacturing city on Flat river in the southwestern part of Montcalm county. It is on the D. L. & L. M. R. R .. 144 miles from Detroit and 21 northwest of Ionia. It derives water power from the river. and includes among its manufactories 4 51w mills, 2 flouring mills, 2 machine shops. a woolen mill, 2 sash, door and blind factpries. 2 planing mills, a tannery, and 3 shingle mills.
The city contains a population of 3.150, and became incorporated in IS;o. . It has a number of fine business blocks, a national bank, 2 weekly newspapers, 3 commodious school buildings, 5 churches, lodges of Masons, Odd Fellows, and Knights of Fv thias, an efficient fire department and a beau- tiful cemetery. GRINDSTONE CITY.
A settlement of 200 persons in Port Austin township, Huron county, on the shore of lake Huron, 8 miles east of Port Austin. The place settled about 1850, takes its name from extensive quarries of very superior stone for grind and whet stones found here. There are two quarries opened, owned and operated respectively by J. R. & R. Wallace of De- troit, and Worthington & Sons of Vermillion, Ohio. The place has a daily mail. Robert Wallace, postmaster.

GROSSE ISLE.
A large island in the Detroit river, 14 miles below Detroit. It is crossed by the Canada Southern R. R. , and is fast becoming a popu- lar summer resort. It has three hotels, one the Alexander House, a first class establish- ment and well patronized. There is also an
Episcopal church on the island. Grapes are extensively grown, and the river on all sides. affords excellent fishing grounds. Hay, grapes, wine and white fish are staple articles of shipment. Population about 500. Post- master Anthony Dudgeon.

GROSVENOR.
Also known as Blissfield Junction, a post- office at the crossing of the L. S & M. S. R. R., and the Chicago & Canada Southern K. R., 1 12 miles west of Blis-field. It is in Palmyra township, Lenawee county, 9 miles southeast of Adrian. There is no village, only a hotel and eating house. Its only importançe is as a placeof transfer between the two railroads. HANCOCK.
A large and thriving mming and manufac. turing village, situated on the north shore of Portage lake, in Houghton county, just op- posite the village of Houghton, with which it is connected by steam terry. The village was first laid out in 1858, and its rapid growth and prosperity were occasioned is its being the location of the famous Quivey mine, being the most productive and pre per-
ous in the upper peninsula, and still sur- passel only by the wonderful Calumet and Hecla. Besides the Quincy, two other divi- dend-paying mines lie within the village lin.its-the Franklin and the Pewabic. now operated under one management as the Frank- lin-Pewabic mine. It contains the extensive stamping mills of the Quincy mine, and 4 other stamp mills belonging to different mines in the vicinity, one large foundry and machine shop, copper smelting works, 2 steam saw mills and 4 churches, Congregational, Metho. dist, Catholic and Lutheran, and a large graded school.
Hancock is the southern terminus of the Mineral Range railway, a narrow or 3 foot gauge road, 1215 miles in length extending to Calumet, and a road, which for its financial success, has hardly been equaled by any rail- road in the country.

A postoffice on the town line between the townships of Jamestown and Georgetown, Ottawa county, 4% miles southwest of Grand- ville, on the mail route to Holland, and is 30 miles southeast of Grand Haven. The postoffice at Linden station, on the G. R. & I. R. R., 3 miles north of Clam Lake, and 100 miles north of Grand Rapids. It is in the township of Haring, Wexford county. A postoffice at the junction of Harris Creek and Coldwater river, in the township of Bowne, Kent county, 10 miles east of Cale- donia station and S north of Middleville, on the G. R. HARRISVILLE.
The county seat of Alcona county, a vil- lage of about 800 inhabitants on the shore of lake Huron, 200 miles from Detroit by water and 71 miles northeast of Standish on the J. L. & S. R. R., its nearest railroad point. It was settled as early as 1848. Mill creek affords water power. The country back is adapted for farming, and wheat, oats, hay and potatoes are cultivated.
