BENONA.


A small village situated on the east shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of Stony creek and near the southwest corner of Oceana county. Farming is carried on to some extent in the vicinity. Forests of pine and hemlock abound and large quantities of lumber, railroad ties and bark are shipped away. First settled in IS50. Population 200. Distances-From Chicago 120 miles by lake, from Hart, the county seat, 17 miles, and from Shelby, its shipping station on the Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore R. R., 9 miles. This thriving town is the center of the great fruit growing district, and the most important fruit shipping point on Lake Michigan It is situated in Berrien county. Benton township, at the mouth of the Paw Paw river and on the C. & M. L. S. R. R .. and is the lake terminus of the proposed Elkhart & Lake Michigan railroad, which

will pass through the center of Berrien county, the most productive and densely populated section of the State, abounding in excellent timber for manufacturing and building purposes. Paw Paw river affords superior water power. The elegant churches, school buildings and private residences, at- test the culture, and the ship canal (costing over $50,000), and other public works are evidences of the wealth and enterprise of the population which numbers some 1,500. Ac- cording to statements given at the Custom House, the following shipments of fruit were made in 1874: 8,300 barrels of apples, 500,- ooo baskets of peaches, and 100,000 crates of berries.

BERRIEN SPRINGS.


The county seat of Berrien county. It is on the St. Joseph river, 25 miles above its mouth, and about the geographical center of that county. It is ro miles northwest of Niles, and 15 southeast of St. Joseph. It has a population of about 800. It has fine facilities for water power, but they are not as yet improved. BERTRAND.


A village of 300 inhabitants, on the St. Joseph river, inthe township of Niles, south- east corner of Berrien county, 312 miles due south of the city of Niles, on the road to South Bend. The South Bend branch of the M. C. R. R. passes through Bertrand. It is in a good farming country, grain and potatoes being the staple products. An extensive brickyard is carried on here, and brick forms the leading article of shipment. It takes its name from Joseph Bertrand, a Frenchman who settled here at an early day. No intoxicating liquors are sold in Bertrand. Postmaster, D. C. Higbee.
